Pope leads new cardinals in Mass

VATICAN CITY (AP) โ€” Looking weary during a third straight day of speeches and ceremony, Pope Benedict XVI led 22 new cardinals in Mass Sunday and prayed for help so that he and his aides can continue to carry out the Catholic church's worldwide mission.

Many of the men who sat before the pope in front of the Baroque central altar of St. Peter's Basilica, dressed in white robes and wearing their new red hats, will likely vote in secret conclave for Benedict's successor after his death.

Benedict, who turns 85 in April, read a long homily in a hoarse voice and looked tired on the third straight day of speeches, rituals and appearances for the new cardinals. Benedict told the new members of the College of Cardinals their main task is to "bear witness to the joy of Christ's love."

The Vatican has been embarrassed by months of intrigue involving alleged corruption and apparent jockeying for power within the hierarchy with a view to the next papacy. The leaking of documents and a rash of in-house scandals have been interpreted by observers as indications that Vatican insiders see Benedict's attention to the Holy See's bureaucracy as waning.

Since becoming pontiff in 2005 following the long papacy of John Paul II, Benedict has concentrated much energy on improving Christian unity, reaching out to disaffected Anglicans and working to bring ultraconservative Catholic defectors back into the fold. But his own curia โ€” as the Vatican's heavily centralized bureaucracy is known โ€” appears to be dividing into factions amid nasty power plays.

Arriving for Mass, Benedict raised an arm to wave in greeting to faithful in the packed basilica as ushers glided his wheeled platform up the long main aisle, then quickly grasped a support bar on the mobile pedestal, a device he started using a few months ago to save energy.

After the two-hour ceremony, Benedict went to his window of his studio overlooking St. Peter's Square to greet pilgrims and tourists. He prayed that the Virgin Mary "may help me and my collaborators to work tirelessly for the unity of the people of God and to announce to all the peoples the message of salvation, carrying out humbly and courageously the service of truth in charity."

Speaking about the new "princes of the church," Benedict told the faithful that they are "now ever more committed to work with me in guiding the universal church."

But while the making of new cardinals always sparks speculation about whether any of them are potential contenders for the papacy themselves, Benedict is going ahead with his drive to invigorate faithful worldwide in their adherence to church teaching. Next month, he will make a pilgrimage to Mexico and Cuba, although his schedule includes relatively few public appearances compared with previous papal journeys abroad.

While prelates' handling of scandals involving pedophile priests have caused dismay among faithful in the United States and much of Europe, traditional bastions of church support, Catholicism is showing growth in parts of Africa and Asia

And they have a lot of friends with benefits.
They are provided with clothing, room, board, meals,
        transportation, health care, etc.
Jesus had nowhere to lay his head.

Pope Benedict has a daunting challenge clearing out, both, overt and closet Modernists from within the Vatican. Some have been entrenched for a half century within those walls.
The apex of their work was manifested during the late 1970s through the early 1980s until disclosures of sexual misconduct and anti-Magisterium behavior among clerics leaked out to the public. It has been a flood of scandal and news of school and parish church closings since. Healing will be lengthy and require much effort.

The Church is an organization of human imagination. This is mythological peer pressure, extended to pinacle of ignorance. These men who think about religion their entire lives, fail to come to the simple conclusion that they profess fairy tales. God is simpler than 200 Volumes of Cannon Law. From the beginning of time, men have invented 'belief' systems to create artificial authority. But, this collective recognition of the their value, denegrates the concept of individual civil liberties. Thank goodness we have the Bill of Rights to prevent these men from killing us for calling them out as theater of the absurd.

Seven pointers given in an address by Cardinal Timothy Dolan archbishop of New York:
      1) Remembering that even those who boast of their secularism have an innate longing for the divine; the first step of evangelization must be to keep the quest for God alive

      2) "Be not afraid" -- confident, without being triumphalist, since it is the power of God who sends his people to evangelize

      3) Knowing that the new evangelization is not about presenting a doctrine or belief-system, but a Person, whose name is Jesus

      4) Nevertheless, this Jesus is the Truth. Hence, evangelization is linked to catechesis

      5) An evangelist must be a person of joy -- someone who smiles

      6) The new evangelization is about love -- the love of God made concrete in service

      7) Finally, martyrdom. A reminder that the Church is now peopled by those who are suffering persecution for their faith, and that these martyrs give impetus to the new evangelization.

      May God Bless them all.

      • kovy 3 mths ago
Joyce here it is in plain English. Jesus taught us to love each other. Jesus did not teach us to hate each other. Did you understand? Jesus is the one sent from God, Himself, to save us from our sins. He is the only way to the Father. I wish you well and pray that you discover Christianity.

Love those dresses. Wonder how much a pope dress costs.
      • CeeCee 3 mths ago
When you include the hot-pink thong, the purple fish-net stockings, the red Italian stiletto heels, the canary yellow garter belt, and the silk dress itself, it comes to a cool half-million, while Jesus wore sandals & coarse wool, with no hat. And speaking of hats, we mustn't forget the poop's tall fish hat that frequently causes him to lose his balance and tip over. The pictures here show him tipping over. Of course being drunk doesn't help either. Remember what happened last time.

I enjoy reading what all the quack, ignorant, hateful, prejudice bias, racist, bigoted, diseased commentators have to write; comments if you can call it that; which is un productive and little effect on solving the problems of the world! It looks like this time the lying news media was not successful in screwing everything up as usual!

LOL, I love seeing the pope all dressed up in his funny little dresses and pointy hats. It's like something out of the dark ages.

The Catholic Church has punished a hospital nun for recommending a life-saving
abortion. This week, Sister Margaret McBride of Phoenix, Ariz., was
automatically excommunicated from the Catholic Church and demoted from her
administrative position at St. Josephโ€™s Hospital for her participation in a
panel that recommended an abortion to save a womanโ€™s life. The patient in
question was a pregnant woman whose pulmonary hypertension made it a virtual
certainty that both she and the fetus would die if the pregnancy was carried to
      term.

"Last March, after it was discovered that a 9-year old girl in Brazil was raped
by her stepfather and was pregnant with twins as a result, her mother arranged
for her to have an abortion, as she was unlikely to survive the pregnancy. The
Catholic Church excommunicated the girlโ€™s mother and the doctors who saved her
life. The stepfather was allowed to remain in the Church."

How can catholics be so blinded, it's so sad. Look at your history. It's so bad! It's all based on man made laws. Christmas, Easter, The trinity, Saints. None of them are Biblical! Red this befor you hate on me. Matthew 7: 21-23

In 1933 a concordat between Germany and the Vatican was signed. Article 16 of the concordat stipulated that each bishop of the Catholic Church, before taking office, must take an โ€œoath of loyaltyโ€ to the Nazi regime. And Article 30 required that a prayer be said โ€œfor the welfare of the German Reich and its peopleโ€ after every High Mass.

      The Vaticanโ€™s Gay Priests
For residents of Rome, the sight of courting priests is hardly an anomaly. But a recent exposรฉ is rocking the Catholic Church.

In the basement dining room of Le Mani In Pasta, a trattoria in central Rome, a young, glossy-eyed couple stare at each other across a table for two. They smile and blush over a private joke. There is no handholding or kissing, but they are clearly more than friends, even though they are both wearing dark shirts and the telltale white clerical collar.
For residents of Rome, the sight of courting priests is hardly an anomaly. The phenomenon is a well-known secret here, and one that was largely ignored until last weekend, when the Italian weekly magazinePanorama published a shocking exposรฉ called โ€œLe Notti Brave Dei Preti Gay,โ€ or โ€œGood Nights Out for Gay Priests.โ€ Investigative journalist Carmelo Abbate spent 20 days undercover posing as the boyfriend of a man who ran in gay clerical circles, secretly videotaping the sexual escapades of three Rome-based priests. Abbate caught the priests on hidden camera dirty dancing at private parties and engaging in sex acts with male escorts on church property. He also caught them emerging from dark bedrooms in time to celebrate mass. In one postcoital scene, โ€œFather Carloโ€ parades around seminaked, wearing only his clerical vestments. Abbateโ€™s โ€œdateโ€ even had sex with one of the priests to corroborate the story. โ€œThis is not about homosexuality,โ€ Abbate, who is not gay, told NEWSWEEK. โ€œThis is about private vices and public virtues. This is about serious hypocrisy in the Catholic Church.

God's saints; "here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus."
(Revelation 14:12) Consider the three angeles messages in Revelation 14. Sunday observance is not of God, but a tradition on men. "But in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrins the commandments of men." (Matthew 15:9) He who has an ear let him here. God Bless!
