Pope visiting homeland with mixed views on church

BERLIN (AP) — When Benedict XVI arrives in Berlin this week, he will be greeted in his homeland by a Lutheran chancellor, a gay mayor and a divorced, remarried Roman Catholic president.

The breadth of potential social and religious conflicts represented by the German leadership reflects the state of a nation that is proud of, but also sometimes indifferent and antagonistic toward, the German-born pontiff — and the church he represents.

In a weekend address on German television ahead of his Sept. 22-25 visit Benedict told viewers he was especially excited to visit Berlin and speak in the German parliament.

"All of this is not religious tourism, even less a show," the 84-year-old pope, born Joseph Ratzinger, said an address broadcast on ARD television late Sunday. "It is about bringing God back into our field of view; God who is often missing, but so very needed."

Not all Germans are so convinced.

Protests have been organized at all the pope's planned stops during his four-day trip. Some opposition lawmakers have said they will not attend his address to parliament and gay and student groups have announced demonstrations to be held in Berlin and Erfurt.

"We are against discrimination, unequal treatment, against the banning of condoms and we want to make that clear," Joerg Steinert, director of the German Gay and Lesbian Association told Associated Press Television News. "We will be visible when the pope addresses parliament."

Berlin's openly gay mayor, Klaus Wowereit, has said that he welcomes the pontiff's visit to the capital and will meet with him personally. He has also expressed understanding for the protests planned by gay, leftist and other groups in Berlin.

"It is to be expected that in a city such as Berlin, people will be critical in their view of the Catholic Church and want to express that," said Wowereit.

Unlike Benedict's Bavarian homeland, Berlin is largely Protestant, or secular — a leftover of decades of Communist rule.

Yet even in the more staunchly Catholic southwestern city of Freiburg — the final stop on the pope's journey — a group calling itself "Freiburg Without the Pope" has been printing T-shirts depicting the city's historic cathedral sheathed in a bright pink condom.

Church organizers say the pontiff is aware of the planned protests, but is choosing instead to focus on the 260,000 people who are expected to attend Masses in Berlin's Olympic stadium and at an airfield in Freiburg, as well as a historic ecumenical service to be held with German Lutherans in the home of the Reformation.

Roughly 30 percent of Germany's 82 million inhabitants are Catholic — an equal number are Lutheran — but the Church has been losing members in recent years.

The Vatican's views on contraception, the role of women, homosexuality and its handling of the sexual abuse scandal that rocked Germany last year are seen by many here as outdated and out-of-touch.

"We are in an ongoing crisis, a shift in society, but also in the church," said Christian Meisner, a spokesman for We Are Church, a movement that calls for reforms in the Roman Catholic Church and has planned protests at all three of the pope's stops. The group was launched in Germany and Austria, but has spread to other nations.

Even an issue such as the refusal to allow remarried divorcees, such as German President Christian Wulff, to accept communion sparks heated discussions over how the Church can hold up its claims of mercifulness and forgiveness.

A recent poll indicated most Germans don't think the papal visit is particularly important. Only 14 percent of 1,008 Germans surveyed by the Forsa institute between Sept. 8-9 said the visit was of personal importance to them, compared with 55 percent that said it held "no importance whatsoever."

"There is a great potential in religion, when it is able to carry a message of hope, but that is not happening right now," Meisner said.

The potentially most sensitive topic in Germany is the church's handling of last year's sex abuse scandal. Hundreds of Germans came forward with claims that they had been sexually or physically abused by Catholic priests.

The claims sparked soul-searching within the Church and prompted Archbishop Robert Zollitsch, who heads the German Bishops Conference, to call for a process of dialogue in the church here.

Asked in an interview with the news agency dapd whether the pope would meet with abuse victims, as he has done on trips to the United States and Great Britain, Zollitsch refused to comment, although local media have reported that such plans have been made.

"The pope knows the reality of this issue in our country. I cannot say whether and, if so, how he will address it," Zollitsch said.

"Even an issue such as the refusal to allow remarried divorcees, such as German President Christian Wulff, to accept communion sparks heated discussions over how the Church can hold up its claims of mercifulness and forgiveness." Duh! Mercy and forgiveness should
only be dispensed to those who admit they have done wrong and ask for forgiveness. Is
President Wulff admitting wrongdoing and asking for forgiveness? Just asking.

“Many Catholic priests have been brought before judges in criminal and civil cases in the U.S., Ireland, Australia, Canada, Belgium and elsewhere. In the U.S. the Catholic Church has paid billions of $$ in compensation to those abused by pedophile priests, 8 U.S. dioceses have been forced into bankruptcy, most recently the Archdiocese of n-Rights Abuses? Here is a statement by the, the International group for Victims of Sexual Abuse by Priests, “The Vatican officials are being charged in this case because they are responsible for rape, other sexual violence and for the physical and psychological torture of victims around the world both through command responsibility and through direct cover up of crimes." “"Crimes against tens of thousands of children, are being covered up by officials at the highest level of the Vatican”

Who are we that we are able to define His church? His church is and always has been one since Pentecost, no matter our stupid petty squabbles.

The Four Marks of the Church is a term describing four specific adjectives—one, holy, catholic and apostolic—
      • Corky 8 mths ago
First, the Bible says only God is holy, second catholic just means universal and apostolic means they want you to believe they have a patent on salvation which they do not.

I've noticed that the Dalai Lama is much more welcome than the pope, whenever and where ever he travels. Perhaps the difference is the attitude, as well as the message.

That is because westerners do not know much about buddhism....most major religions have serious faults because they are invented by humans.
      • GT 8 mths ago
Buddha never claim himself to be god. Do you think if Aliens were to invent religion, will they make it better?

I see a lot of people on here defending both this cult and religion in general, so I'm going to ask this of all. Can you name one country that ever accepted christianity without an army forcing them to? Just one people? That answer will tell you all you need to know.

Christianity spread like wildfire for the first 300 years even though practicing the religion was a death sentence... Enough said...

Actually the Protestant part is a legacy of the Thirty Years War, not communism. Most of northern Germany is Lutheran and most of Southern Germany is Catholic, and it's been that way for nearly 400 years -- it'll probably take another 100 for Yahoonews to get the facts right.

Just seems to me that so many purported Christians tend to worship their church more than God. I believe strongly in God... it's the churches I have problems with.

The most prosperous regions in Germany are Bavaria, Hesse and Baden-Wuerttemberg which lie in the Catholic south. The southern part of Germany also has the biggest chunk of Germany's newly established elite universities. The more liberal you become, the more poor and stupid you become.

So much hate here. Why don't you all just, on an individual basis, try a random act of kindness today. Let the hate stop with you. Be part of a solution that betters our world. Stop the hate.

The socalled "out of touch" ideas could be an acceptance of things that are simply ideas that some people just want to do for their own wishes because to follow the proper way requires more effort than they want to exert; but doing right things hasn't always been easy. Some people want to have every thing easy and don't realize there be a real penalty for doing wrong things in the end.

The Church will continue to evolve but, unless these old gals start behaving more like men and shake up the clutches of cross dressers, it will continue to drive people away. They're still stuck in past Roman culture with a pope as a "ruler". Those days are fast becoming the past and worse, will become obsolete

Why does the news media make such a bug deal out of nothing! The pope knows very who he is meeting with and human nature!

This organization has much to answer for. For centuries, Popes have murdered, lived carnal lives, even producing illigetimate children, taken bribes, imprisoned good people whose views differed from their own, made war on weak nations, hold world wide real estate and businesses, and continue to protect pedophiles. And, the flockers keep them in their richly appointed apartments, limos, etc. Go figuh!

Since 1991 the Russian Orthodox Church has rebuilt alot of their Churches have more members and Church and State relations are very good but a ray of hope from the Euro and Debt Crisis and defaulting of some of the EU members would be a re union of the Catholic and Orthodox churches and East and West politically getting closer to

They have as much to teach us after the 1000 year old schism when we reflect on the Child abuse scandals , Some countries in open critism of their National Church , Priest numbers decreasing less people going to mass , conflict in Church of England over Gays and Women bishops and add on the debt and Euro crisis and affects that will have to peoples daily life

Blueeyed cherokee makes an intelligent argument. The bible is difficult to understand. Believers will say that only those that God allows will be blessed with understanding. This seems like a valid position and an intelligent safeguard for a deity to implement. To state that something few can understand or follow was written by primitive, idiotic men and is followed by a bunch of morons or mentally handicapped individuals I would have to agree if you are referring to the US Tax Code. Which infers that all US citizens are morons. Thank you! I resemble that remark. The French revolution was nothing like the American Revolution. The FR was a disorganized mess with no direction resulting in the overthrow of a monarchy and the installation of a dictator. The American Revolution had a purpose to create and Independent Republic in which men were granted rights by the creator. Democracy is an abomination in which 51% can dictate the freedoms of 49%. This is not what the founding fathers set out to create. It is however what the all powerful government has indoctrinated schoolchildren and citizens into believing is the form of government we should embrace. Meanwhile democracy is giving way to socialism and the US Constitution is under constant attack by mentally and morally bankrupt individuals. With all the wars, suffering and and atrocities committed by the United States over the past 235 years I still will continue to defend, worship, live and love this country. The same goes for my church. The founding fathers knew there had to be checks and balances. The check and balance to government is organized religions and organized citizens.

The Catholic church has still to pay the price for covering up systematically for pedophile priests. Make it pay and pay and pay again until it learns the lesson!

Credit this to another soul who must remain anonymous, 'I didn't save your name....thanks anyway !
The following doctrines and practices of Roman catholicism are unbiblical and an abomination to almighty God: Infant baptism, confirmation, the mass, transubstantiation, celibate priests and nuns, confession to priests, last rites, purgatory, limbo, Mary sinless, Mary perpetual virgin, Mary assumed into heaven, Mary queen of heaven, praying to Mary and "saints", praying for the dead, one true church, papal infallibility, statues, rosary, penance, and the worst, the papacy itself. The "church" intentionally omits the true 2nd commandment against graven images and doubles up the last one against coveting and making 2 commandments out of one. This is because of the blatant idolatry of catholicism, it is intentional scriptural manipulation and an abomination to God. The "church" elevates man made traditions over the sovereign Word of God which Jesus openly condemned. The "church" has perverted the true Gospel of Christ which is salvation by Grace through faith in Christ alone into a works based theology. Catholicism is corrupt to the core and its very hierarchy is unbiblical. When you add in all the murder and torture along with rampant pedophilia what do you get? One true church? Hardly.
