Post office in Ben Franklin's house may close

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A post office in a building that Benjamin Franklin once owned is on the Postal Service's list of branches that could close.

The post office in Philadelphia's historic Old City neighborhood is the only one in the country that doesn't fly a U.S. flag. That's because there wasn't one in 1775, when Franklin founded what has evolved into today's Postal Service.

There's also a postal museum upstairs from the so-called B. Free Franklin Post Office, located in a house once owned by Franklin. It opened as a U.S. post office in 1975, the 200th anniversary of Franklin's appointment by the Continental Congress as the country's first postmaster general.

The only Colonial-themed post office operated by the Postal Service, it also is a tourist attraction that hand-cancels stamps with the B. Free Franklin postmark that Franklin used.

In all, 203 post offices in Pennsylvania are on the list of branches being reviewed for possible closure.

The financially troubled Postal Service said Tuesday that it is considering whether to close 3,653 offices, branches and stations nationwide — more than 1 in 10 of its retail outlets.

After an office is placed on the list of potential closures, the community served by that office will have 60 days to file their comments. If an office is to be closed, appeals will be heard by the independent Postal Regulatory Commission.

I grew up in the City of Philadelphia and have been to this Post Office more times than I can remember and am hoping to take my grandchildren some day. The Historial Society of Philadelphia should take it over and all the proceeds from the stamps should go to preserve this treasure.

It is a historical building, it is not being demolished, the post office is simply closing the office operating out of it.

They would not make a profit from the stamps unless they added on their own surcharge.

That post office is like the flagship post office for the postal service! Closing it would be like decommissioning the USS Constitution so that the Navy can save a few bucks.

I agree with reductions in unproductive or unneeded postal outlets but I think you need to draw the line somewhere other than the first post office. If nothing else this should be recommisioned as a national monument I assume just like Betsy Ross's house, Independence hall, etc.

You are both absolutely right. I used to direct youth conferences and that was a highlight of the students. Seeing where Ben Franklin lived and then mailing a post card from the post office with Ben's postmark. The kids loved it! Would send about 100 per week.

I agree with Vinny and Chris, but HLHW makes an important point. Every zip code should have its own post office. The local post office is a kind of town hall.

The Postal Service was set up to disseminate information, news and meaningful correspondence to inform and educate the Citizens of These United States of America, so that an informed and knowledgeable citizenry could keep our Republic. Ben Franklin on Sept. 17, 1787, when the citizens of Philadelphia asked, Mr. Franklin what have you brought us?”; reply “A Republic, if you can keep it! ” Something happened to America in the late 20th and early 21st Century, misinformation and lies to keep us uninformed and unscrupulously manipulated. America is becoming the ignorant masses, our Founding Fathers feared.

And the postal service is just dumb enough to close a national landmark. You'd think they could at least spare this one!
      • Tiger 10 mths ago
There are landmarks all over Old city. This is just one. As a functional post office, it's too small with no parking.

The post office is a part of the old city park system and should be saved. little kids have "fun" getting the stamp of B. Free. and it would be crazy to close it for two reasons. 1 the place pays for it's self through adding to the environment for the American History tourists and it is the first post office where virtually every founding father used for correspondence. If Washington slept here makes a place history what about the post office he used a block from his house and where he went to many times. and was started by Ben. The fact that it is still in use adds to the founding fathers starting ideas still in use today!

It was the first opened, it should be the last one to close.

Did your forefathers rolled when they did away with the pony express and replaced it with the espresso?

Why does management still receive "BONUSES." if the PO is losing "BILLIONS" every year.

      • Kim 10 mths ago
So not true Rob! I have a 401k and the same health care I had at the job before I was a carrier!

Who was the brain-trust within the Post Office that ordered billions of dollars of sorting equipment on the heels of the Internet taking over? Brilliant....just brilliant. This is so typical of everything that's wrong with the Federal Government. No one is paying attention because it's not their money being spent. Stop the madness, make all Federal employees pay their fair share as well as the politicians. It either stops now or there is going to be hell to pay in the future.

The Postal Service needs to face the reality that the decrease in the amount of mail caused by the internet is permenent and requires a major restructuring. Closing of some offices is understood/necessary, but a decrease in home delivery service is also needed/justified. I propose regular home delivery services Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Priority delivery as currently performed. Add more post office boxes, if the demand is there afterward.

Most businesses cut at the bottom of the tier. The real problem is at the top! To many administrators, assistants, assistants to the assistants, and perks by the box fulls! That is where the real problem is with the USPS. MOST of its employees are very nice and polite. Some leave alot to be desired. The service area is a major area where it is obvious English needs to be deemed the national lanugage. It takes forever and a day to get to a counter for help when there is a Hispanic who doesn't speak English, and has no intention of ever learning it, being waited on. VERY aggraviating! Keep the Ben Franklin post open, it probably generates income, but is very unique even if it doesn't.

The US Post Office at 620 Allendale Rd King of Prussia, PA 19406 does NOT diplay an Ameician Flag either. Rumor has it that the USPS rents the building and the landlord will not allow the Flag to be flown. If this is true, shouldn't this have been checked out BEFORE signing the lease.

This what happens when you have unions and stupid execs. in charge.

When I visit Philly and do the tourist stuff, I always go to this PO. I buy my postcards there, I mail them from there. Every American should do it.

E-Cards suck compared to actual greeting cards. You want me to spend 10 times as much to have a Happy Birthday card sent to a friend or relative via UPS or Fed Ex? The USPS is a valuable service provided by the US government. I do agree in streamlining it to eliminate bloat, but it should never be done away with.

Any building over 200 years old and in decent condition, is deemed "An Historical Building." With that being said, my belief is that the Post Office System want to rid it's self of any maintenance to any Historical building.....but here's the main question, should the USPS receive any compensation from the National and State Historical Societies for this building?
    • meme  •  10 mths ago
Out of all that should close, this should not be one of them. I am sure there is another one that could go in its place.

The postal service doesn't do enough to cut costs at it's profitable post offices, just keeps trying to close small ones. In metro areas they have a retail post office for every ZIP code. Most open only until 5:30pm! Even banks can't keep the hours the post office still keeps! They should close 1/3 of the metro post offices, and keep the others open until 8pm. They forget that customer service is the whole point of retail postal offices. In rural areas they shouldn't close an office if another is more than 20 miles away. Yes the rural offices will often lose money, but they do so as part of a complete system. Their parcel delivery rates need reconsideration as well. They ship flat rate boxes at competitive rates, but everything else is 2-4times more expensive than other methods. I question their pricing models. They say mail is unprofitable, but there are several examples to show that parcel delivery is profitable(UPS and FEDEX come to mind)
    • rodocrafty  •  10 mths ago
They are not going to close it? It is too valuable.
    • Rod  •  10 mths ago
A good number of postal workers are the epitome of government waste. They have a two hour route which they will milk into a comfortable 8 hour, full day route. They they whine and file a grievance when temp comes on for the holidays and does the job in the time it should take.

I like my US mail delivery every day even though I have access to the Internet & TV news. We get many coupons for use locally; and, they're very helpful. Also, getting & sending greeting and holiday cards through the mail is important.
