Author Erminia “Minnie” Lopez Rincon shares her triumphant story.

For Lopez Rincon, books presented a world different from her impoverished, traumatic existence, and college being but a dream, she strove to be a model student, employee, wife and mother. In her efforts to keep an immaculate home, which included husband and children, she became a workaholic to avoid the label “dirty Mexican” uttered by some, unaware of the cost to her mental stability. Eventually she would be wrecked with recurring “splitting” bodily sensations. Concerned, she sought relief through therapy, hypnosis and meditation and found that her past was calling for recognition – the answer to that call can be found in the pages of “Survival within Two Cultures.”
An excerpt from the book:
“We were fortunate, however, in having an outside community toilet, with running water in a tank and a chain to release it. It was in an ample room about nine by nine feet, or perhaps larger. The room had one window, about two by two feet, no curtain, and had an electric light bulb at the ceiling that provided light. The toilet facility was located some distance from the homes and kept clean by the residents. Although safety was not generally an issue, it was not pleasant to make the trip to it at night. Eventually, electricity was installed in the homes.”
Fighting through her early struggles, her psychological issues and the negative effects of discrimination, Rincon hopes her story will show readers the hardships that some people must live through – giving them hope to do the same and compassion to refrain from inflicting pain on others.
About the Author
Erminia “Minnie” Lopez Rincon completed a cosmetology course, worked for an insurance company, got married, and had five children. In 1964, at age 36, she enrolled at Purdue University, where she earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees. Now a retired school psychologist, she lives in Highland, Indiana, where she enjoys spending time with her 24 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
