    President Abbas declares 'Palestinian Spring'

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — Thousands of Palestinians cheering and waving flags gave President Mahmoud Abbas a hero's welcome in the West Bank Sunday, as he told them triumphantly a "Palestinian Spring" had been born following his historic speech to the U.N. last week.

Abbas' popularity has skyrocketed since he asked the U.N. on Friday to recognize Palestinian independence, defying appeals from Israel and the United States to return to peace talks. His request has pushed the region into uncharted waters, and left the international community scrambling over how to respond.

Thousands of people crowded Abbas' West Bank headquarters in the city of Ramallah to get a glimpse of the 76-year-old president upon his return from New York. Abbas was uncharacteristically animated, shaking his hands and waving to the audience.

Abbas compared his campaign to the Arab Spring, the mass demonstrations sweeping the Arab world in hopes of freedom, saying that an independent Palestinian state is inevitable.

"We have told the world that there is the Arab Spring, but the Palestinian Spring is here," he said. "A popular spring, a populist spring, a spring of peaceful struggle that will reach its goal."

He warned that the Palestinians face a "long path" ahead. "There are those who would put out obstacles ... but with your presence they will fall and we will reach our end."

The Palestinians want an independent state in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war.

Israel says it's ready for peace talks, but has rejected Palestinian calls to freeze construction of Jewish settlements in lands claimed by the Palestinians. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also rejected Palestinian demands that the borders between Israel and a future Palestine be based on the 1967 pre-war lines.

Abbas last week asked the U.N. Security Council to grant the Palestinians full U.N. membership. The Security Council is expected to study the request for several weeks before making a decision, though the U.S. — Israel's closest ally — has promised to veto the request if it proceeds.

As an alternative, the Palestinians say they will seek lesser observer status in the General Assembly — short of full statehood but a position that would allow them to join international bodies where they could push their agenda against Israel.

The U.S., like Israel, says it is committed to Palestinian independence, but that direct negotiations, not a U.N. vote, is the only way to resolve the conflict.

A U.N. recognition will not change the situation on the ground, or resolve key issues like the fate of Palestinian refugees or the dueling claims to Jerusalem. But the Palestinians believe an international endorsement will boost their negotiating position should talks resume.

The international Quartet of Mideast mediators — the U.S., EU, Russia and U.N. — last week issued a statement calling for a resumption of peace talks without preconditions and a target for a final agreement by the end of 2012.

Abbas has signaled he will reject the Quartet's plan, while Israel has hinted it accepts it.

Easy to get caught up in the moment, The Palistinian people are expecting change and soon. Getting another dose of disappointment will inflame them all the more. This is now uncharted terrirory considering the success of popular uprisings in Egypt, Libya and elsewhere. A lot of pent up anger in this region.

Anger and hate do not breed peace...these arabs need to face their own internal problems and stop whitewashing them by blaming Israel for their every ill.

About all they can do is revolt against their own leaders, they should overthrow their Hamas counterparts, recognize Israel has a right to exist and make peace once and for all. My whole life these Palestinians have had so many oppurtunities for peace but its like they would rather be in a constant state of whining and complaining I guess.

anybody for a game of Monopoly? One rule change tho. I get boardwalk, park place, atlantic city, marvin gardens, both utilities and all four railroads up front. Parker Bros stole them from me years ago. I didn't care much then, it was just useless sand that nobody wanted. But now it's been irrigated, developed and advanced and I claim it! throw the dice...

Right, this is typical muslim behavior, they conquer lands and churches and
turn them into mosques. This has been going on for centuries. The people of
India have suffered this as well with their temples being taken over.

Forgot to add, the muslims are to damned lazy to build their own buildings.

These "Springs" are not declared by presidents. They're declared by the PEOPLE, who are coincidentally, usually trying to hunt the presidents for sport.

It has never been about land it has always been a racist religious holy war against judaism and christianity. The muslims will not stop until all mankind is under sharia law. All muslim nations are turning against the west. Pakinstan neighbor to Iran is turning against us. They probaly are or will aid Iran in their nuclear ambition. The Arab Spring is just a precurser to WWIII. How can you make peace or negotiate with people who's goal is to make you submit to their religious law or kill you. There will be no peace , it will only get worse the more they are empowered the more they wil attack us.

Too many factions vying for a small section of real estate will only result in further tensions. This is apt to get very ugly in the ensuing months.

If an issue isn't resolved peacefully, it will be resolved violently...

Take a look at their flag. It shows the entire area of Israel, gaza and the west bank as their territory. Can you imagine the reaction of any other country if they had a map on their flag that include the borders of another country? Anyone who thinks they have peaceful intentions, needs to take a reality check. It's obvious that they will never stop making demands and terrorizing the Israelis.

My brothers and Sisters, there is a flesh that has a mind of it's own and it is so funny you don't even know you can communicate with it. Have you ever wondered how come you drove from point A to Point B and you didn't even know how you got to point B? Your got carried away while driving but yet you never crossed the white border line to hit another car, how come.
So while you were driving and your mind was long gone, thinking about that problem or child or girlfriend or boyfriend, or whatever ....who the hell was driving the car? Even more perfect than if you were on your conscious self. All you remembered was you got into your car, started driving and oh, am here already.
Lets start thinking people, there is a very very big spiritual warfare going on and we have no idea about it and God wants us to realize this.

Oh by the way, when you get to the new testament, those letters Paul wrote are not for John, Corinthians or any of the early churches, those letters are for you that is reading it.
Read it as if they were written to YOU and while doing so try and try and try as much to pause your mind, search then listen to that little, tiny, EVER POSITIVE and gentle voice that keeps popping off and on. Try to stabilize and increase the volume while shutting down any sort of distractions as your flesh will remind you things, tell you oh do this or do that just to make sure you do not know other things INSIDE of you.

Am I correct that WW2 cost around 600 million lives? Adjust for technology (wars version of inflation) and we're talking about 1.5 billion... maybe 2 billion people.
Muslims = 1.6 billion today. That wouldn't leave a lot, subtracting 1.5 billion.
