PRESS BOX: St. Louis Cardinals agree to deal with Ellis
The St. Louis Cardinals agreed to a one-year deal with veteran free-agent second baseman Mark Ellis, according to multiple reports.
Terms of the deal were not released. Ellis made $5.25 million with the Los Angeles Dodgers this year.
Ellis had a batting line of .270/.323/.351 with 13 doubles, six home runs and 48 RBI for the Dodgers this season.
The 36-year-old has played 11 seasons in the majors, mostly with the Oakland A's. He is a career .265 hitter with 105 home runs, 538 RBIs and a .330 on-base percentage.
St. Louis will likely use Ellis as insurance for rookie Kolten Wong, whom the team plans to start at second base next year. Wong hit just .153 in 59 at-bats after being called up in August.

---Winnipeg Jets forward Anthony Peluso was suspended three games for boarding Dallas Stars defenseman Alex Goligoski during Saturday's game.
The incident occurred at the 15:28 mark of the second period. Peluso was assessed a major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct.
NBA
---Portland Trail Blazers center Meyers Leonard and Philadelphia 76ers center Daniel Orton were each suspended one game without pay for fighting, the NBA announced.
The incident occurred with 7:19 remaining in the fourth quarter of the Trail Blazers' 139-105 win over the 76ers on Saturday. Leonard body-slammed Orton to the floor and Orton retaliated by elbowing Leonard in the mouth.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
---Former Georgetown forward Greg Whittington is transferring to Rutgers, CBS Sports reported Sunday.
Whittington, who was dismissed by Georgetown in late November, reportedly made the commitment to Rutgers on Saturday night.
