Principal found dead at Tenn. school; student held

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A school principal described as very caring and attentive to her students was killed Wednesday in an apparent homicide at a private school and a 17-year-old student was taken into custody, police said.

Officers said the body of Suzette York, 49, was discovered in a classroom by a teacher shortly after 11 a.m. at Memphis Junior Academy, a Seventh-day Adventist Church-affiliated school in east Memphis.

Police spokeswoman Karen Rudolph said a male student was taken into custody at the school.

A motive and cause of death were not immediately disclosed. Police said only that York was fatally wounded.

Marvin Lowman, executive secretary with the Kentucky-Tennessee conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, said York had been principal at the school since 2008.

Peter Hunter, who attended the school for seven years and now has a 6-year-old cousin in the school, said York was a caring, sweet woman who enjoyed teaching young people.

"She was a wonderful person who was very much involved with her students, a person who cared deeply about the development of her students," he said. "This was not the way she was supposed to go."

Classes at the one-story, red brick school began Monday. A sign out front Wednesday said, "Welcome back." The school has a large back recreation area with a swing set and playground slide.

Tuition ranges from $223 to $840 a month. The school has about 100 students with classes for pre-kindergarten through high school.

"Our staff is committed to providing quality education in a Christian environment," the school's website says.

Hunter said York was a science and math teacher who had left the school, but returned to become an administrator.

"She came back here because she had a passion for the people," he said.

Hunter said the school had a nurturing environment where the goal was to treat everyone as family.

"It shows you that something like this can happen anywhere," he said.

Stephen Rogers and his wife have a son who graduated from the academy and a 14-year-old son who is a freshman there now. Rogers described York as personable and spiritual.

"She had a natural concern for the children being obedient and doing the things that they're supposed to be doing," he said.

Some three hours after the slaying, about 30 people attended a 40-minute prayer service at the nearby Mullins United Methodist Church.

"We are afraid," the Rev. Scottie Brafford said during the service, referring to recent violence in Norway and elsewhere. "We do not know where the bottom is any longer."

Linda Taylor told The Commercial Appeal she received a call from her husband who said the school called and told them to pick up their 14-year-old son, Josiah, because there was an emergency. The school didn't say that someone had been killed.

"I'm just wondering what's going on," she said at the scene.

I taught school for 35 years and my goal was to get our alive. Things seem to be getting worse with every passing year. God help those that are trying to teach our youth. Our society in very sick and completely out of control.

Maybe my age is showing but I don't remember things like this happening when I was growing up in the 50s and early 60s. It seems to me that violence is increasing at a fast rate year after year. It is getting pretty scarey.

In the bible it says Every generation will get worse and worse! It is beyond scary! And it is ALWAYS the GOOD ONES!!!!

It is your age showing......Largest school masacre was in the 1920's. Violence has always been part of the human race. We are just better informed now, so it seems like more.

You're that old and you can't spell "SCARY?"

This is just terrible!!! My question is what the frick does the tuition have to do with this story? Oh let's just promote the prices and the school. Let's pitch that in. Forget what the real story is.... Tacky!!!! It is sad a human life was taken in most like what is a stupid reason, but you want to add the tuition for the school... What the heck is wrong with you?!?!?!?!

Big spread in tuition there, why one wonders, same school, same education!
      • No Yb 9 mths ago
Just in case someone was wondering what the tuition is for sending a homicidal child to school there.

We need better teachers? How about we need to turn our thinking around and exoect more responsibility from parents and their kids and find suitable positive and negative reinforcement for those who are and those who aren't.

Wow! This isn't about a 'Christian' school, that's insignificant.... This is about our problematic society, and our childrean.... The fact that we now have childrean killing adults and adults killing childrean. What's really going on!? Our world Our Planet.
      • Dude 9 mths ago
        Are childrean anything like children?
      • Sane in an Insane World 9 mths ago
A society that has rejected God and embraces secular humanism. No morals, no consequences. Liberals who twist the constitution to suit their own sick way of looking at what's really correct in favor of political correctness. Greed, rudeness, drugs and on and on.
      • GadZooks 9 mths ago
The fact that it is a Christian environment is indeed significant. You can bet that school and institution will re-evauluate its program and goals, as is proper. A private Christian setting is made to deliberately separate itself from the public sector and to seek a more pronounced education on the faiths' beliefs. Actions by their students contrary to their faiths beliefs can result in disciplinary action by the school that would normaly not be taken by the public sector. Yes, adolescent crime is on the rise all around, but this shows that a concerted effort to stymie that can be shortcoming for some, and that begs the question why.

It's safer to be a cop than a teacher in Memphis, probably. At least you can return fire.

again, part of the blame needs to go the ACLU. Since parents, by law, can't displend their kids any longer wirhout the fear of going to jail. I don't mean beating a kid where they go to the hospital, but comman rules in the house as it was years ago. Manners, respect, listen to your parents, etc;. The ACLU came into the home years ago and started to interfer with family values. Its not their,ACLU,total blame here, but a large part of it. I still believe that child raising starts in the home, with out outside interference. Gov't wants the parents to be accountable for their children, but with their hands tied. It never worked before, does not now and never will. Get back to the parents taking control of raising their children, not people like the ACLU.

Ironic that the school is associated with a church and something like this happens. My heart goes out to the principal and her family. The 17 year old should get a one way ticket to purgatory.
    • Mymy  •  9 mths ago
That's very sad. The kid is 17 year though, so he's accountable for his actions (that is to say if he is indeed guilty). I couldn't imagine something like that happening at my school. I don't think I could recover., I don't understand the nasty comments though, a women was murdered and the "kid" isn't really considered a kid in the eyes of a court.

To a certain extent we can blame the parents....the other I blame our legal system. Parents have had their authority yanked out from them courtesy of DHS! The schools have had their authority yanked about the DHS and the parents ....oh...lets not forget the advocate SHRINKS out there.
    • Cash  •  9 mths ago
Expect this to happen more as we get more sensitive about disciplining our children.

What a world we live in - is anyone, anywhere, safe today?
    • A Yahoo! User  •  9 mths ago
Parents dont raise their children anymore. My goodness they dont even teach them to say please and thank you. When is the last time you heard anyone say youre welcome? They just say....ahhh Nooooo problem. Our culture has broken down, no ethics, no morals, no raising children in a household. Its a sad commentary for our way of life.
    • ChuckP  •  9 mths ago
What is happening in our world today? Youth shoulld never even consider homicide. Pretty sad for all of those involved.
