Probable WWII submarine found off Papua New Guinea

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — A wreck found under water in a Papua New Guinea harbor likely was a Japanese midget submarine from World War II, a historian said Friday.

Australian and New Zealand warships found it while working in the area to clear WWII-era explosives Thursday. Simpson Harbor is in the town of Rabaul, which was a major Japanese military base on the northeast coast of the South Pacific nation.

New Zealand Navy Lt. Commander Matthew Ray told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio the find was initially identified as "a 20-meter (66-feet) long solid, manmade object." Closer inspection confirmed it was a submarine, although its nationality was not yet known, he said.

The only submarines involved in fighting around Rabaul were U.S. and Japanese, and both sides have accounted for most, if not all, of their subs in the area, said Gary Oakley, a Australian War Memorial curator and a former submariner.

As Rabaul was Japan's major base in the Southwest Pacific for most of the war, most of the submarines in the harbor had been Japanese. Previously known submarine wrecks in the harbor were also Japanese, he said.

"My best guess would be it's a Japanese midget submarine. It doesn't look big enough to be an ocean-going ... submarine," Oakley said after examining indistinct images of the wreck released by the Australian Defense Department.

One- and two-man Japanese midget submarines were transported by ship or larger submarines and used covertly to infiltrate enemy targets including Pearl Harbor in Hawaii and Sydney Harbor.

Such a submarine could have been destroyed by an American air raid or naval bombardment or even scuttled by the Japanese toward the end of the war, Oakley said.

Ray said underwater remote-controlled vehicles with cameras will be used to try to identify the wreck.

The Japanese government had no immediate comment, pending the outcome of the Australian investigation.

Oakley said it could be the first Australian submarine lost in World War I, although that submarine, AE1, was thought to have sunk in another harbor 12 miles (20 kilometers) away.

AE1 became the first Australian naval loss of the war when it sank on Sept. 15, 1914, with the loss of 35 lives. Rabaul was then the capital of the German New Guineau colony, which was quickly lost to the British.

Rest in peace for those who lost their lives in the war. Whether you are enemy or not.

Out of the 220 subs built for the US Navy in WWII 52 were lost. They are given the honor of "On eternal patrol". Roughly 20% lost--but destroyed over 50% of Japanese merchant shipping. Pretty outstanding because the US Navy in 1940 still classified submarines as "Coastal Defense Ships" . I believe they had the highest fatality rate of any branch of the services. I hope they do not disturb the site RIP --sub-mariners

Your completely right Greg. The fatality rate in the beginning stages of the war were somewhere around 70%. The first subs were loud diseals with a very shallow depth ceiling. On top of that. American Torpedo's, in the beginning were inferior and faulty and had a habit of leaving a very visible tail wake when fired, thus giving away a Subs only defense, stealth.

Not quite sure but I thought American Bomber crews in Europe had a higher chance of dying in combat. I could be wrong. Either way, they deserve our gratitude and respect.
      • Sabers 7 mths ago
At the start of the war, American torpedoes were so bad that they were known to sometimes circle back at the sub that fired them. It didn't help that the Japanese had probably the best torpedo fo the war, the osygen-driven Long Lance. Did some major damage with it, especially around Guadalcanal.

      "A Sailor's Grave...
Tread lightly, 'tis a Sailor's grave, A lonely, salty foam; And yet to hearts like mine and thine. It should be holy ground. Speak softly, let no careless laugh, No idle, thoughtless jest, Escape your lips where sweetly sleeps The hero in his rest. For him no reveille will beat When morning beams shall come; For him, at night, no tattoo rolls... Its thunders from the drum. Tread lightly! for a man bequeathed, Ere laid beneath this sea, His ashes to his native land, His gallant soul to God."

ya but the people that died on that sub were probably war criminals. The japanese were ruthless.

Nice. But it ended on a rather jarring note. Couldn't he have found something to rhyme with God? Should have used the word 'spot' instead of sea, two lines previous.

Supposibly the USS Robalo was sunk west of Palawan Island, Philippines but this would definitely be interesting if this was the USS Robalo and help your relatives have closure.

No matter what nation the sub is from anyone aboard who lost their life is due the respect and dignity of a patriots serving their country in war.If it is US even more so. The USN submarine service accounted for 55% of all Japanese ships sunk in WWII. Not bad considering that submarines were 2% of the Fleet. #$%$ good hunting. I served in submarines in the 1980's and all submariners are brothers, no matter the nationality. They have all faced the hazards and hardships. You try spending 3 months at a time in a tube about the size of 5 busses.

Quint: "Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into her side, Chief. We was comin' back from the island of Tinian to Leyte. We'd just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half-hour. Tiger. 13-footer...'

I cannot wait until they determine the nationality. Incredibly historic find. I hope they do not disturb it but if they do, I hope it will be with the same dignity as when they raised the Hunley.

My grandfather was on the other side of submarine warfare. He served on the USS Card and they hunted German submarines. They were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for their efforts. I say they should do what they need to do to ID the ship and then let it remain as a memorial to those who served on it.

My Dad was a Naval Submariner in WWII and went through some really harrowing moments. However, 6 yrs later when we lived in Hawaii he had no problem with us having a very sweet Japanese girl for a baby sitter. He respected everyone. If it were my Dad down there I would like him to be left undisturbed resting in peace.

Identify it so relatives can be notified, lay a wreath and then leave it alone. No matter what its nationality, brave men died there. For those leaving humorous comments about this story, too bad you can't understand anything more profound than reality television shows.
