Prominent Climate Scientist Admits to Leaking Heartland Documents

A water and climate scientist with decades of research in his field has admitted to deceiving the free-market conservative Heartland Institute into leaking confidential documents about their donors, fundraising efforts and plans to spread doubt about climate change.

Peter Gleick, the president of the Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment, and Security in Oakland, Calif., issued a statement on the Huffington Post on Monday admitting to using a false name to trick Heartland into sending him the documents, which he then forwarded to climate communicators and journalists, he said.

"My judgment was blinded by my frustration with the ongoing efforts — often anonymous, well-funded, and coordinated — to attack climate science and scientists and prevent this debate, and by the lack of transparency of the organizations involved. Nevertheless I deeply regret my own actions in this case. I offer my personal apologies to all those affected," he stated on HuffPo.

The documents included a list of donors to the Heartland Institute as well as fundraising plans for a variety of projects, including one to create school-friendly curricula that would make a case against human-caused climate change. Climate scientists overwhelmingly agree that climate change is largely driven by humans.

Gleick's admission offers a possible explanation for one document that Heartland says is fake, a memo that purports to outline the organization's 2012 climate change communication plan. Gleick claims that someone anonymously mailed him this memo, and his quest to substantiate the information in the document is what led him to solicit the confidential documents from Heartland. The institute, however, disputes this, calling Gleick's explanation "unbelievable" in a statement on their website and suggesting that Gleick himself wrote the memo.

The admission of wrongdoing by a prominent climate scientist is likely to fuel the fires of the political debate around climate science, regardless of what the documents reveal.

"One way or the other, Gleick’s use of deception in pursuit of his cause after years of calling out climate deception has destroyed his credibility and harmed others," wrote climate journalist Andy Revkin on his New York Times "Dot Earth" blog, adding, "The broader tragedy is that his decision to go to such extremes in his fight with Heartland has greatly set back any prospects of the country having the 'rational public debate' that he wrote — correctly — is so desperately needed."

Others argued that Gleick's actions don't excuse Heartland's strategies.

"Our criticism of the Heartland Institute's strategy of spreading misinformation about climate science still stands," according to a statement put out by the Union of Concerned Scientists. "It is waging a cynical campaign, funded by corporate interests and anonymous individuals, to undermine the public's understanding of climate science and introduce ideology disguised as science into our children's classrooms."

This should not be a political issue where people are spending money to convince other people on way or the other, or to teach our kids one way or the other. The debate should be based on facts, and just facts, not opinion or what works out best for the wallets of either side.
      • Anthony Kendrick 3 mths ago
The problem is who's facts. Usually you only get one side of the facts which tend to skew a person's point of view.
      • wh 3 mths ago
yea...but true facts do not take sides...and that's the problem...its hard for the people at large to sift through all the #$%$ and get the real information without the spin.
      • Rocketdan 3 mths ago
You assume there are some "true facts." When theories are being developed, debated, challenged and defended there is a period of true uncertainty. It is absolutely essential that the debate is not shut down prematurely by one perspective with power declaring it "settled." When there is a ton of money available to be dispersed based on the accepted answer, it will become political.

      Good science loves debate.
      • Logic 3 mths ago
Very true. Yet, this issue has been roundly decided by the scientific community. It's less certain with the under-educated, energy hogs.
      • James 3 mths ago
        Or it should.
      • Orca 3 mths ago
It loves scientific debate anyway. Bringing political debate to a scientific forum is like bringing a nuke to a thumb wrestling match.

When numbers are knowingly changed or misapplied, and contrary numbers are suppressed.. that's fraud.
      • Michael 3 mths ago
shaddup already - YOO are a fraud
      • apisto 3 mths ago
Yeah it's about time someone exposed Heartland. You can't just pull numbers out of a hat and hand them to 8 year olds.

Indeed, Good science loves good debate, but "business friendly" motivated propaganda, scheming and brainwashing does not qualify as good debate, despite what the Chamber of Commerce tries to sell you.
      • Troy S 3 mths ago
        But gov't funded propaganda does?
      • buggrthat 3 mths ago
What government funded propaganda Troy? If you are talking about climate scientists that publish the results of actual data collected in the field, that is not propaganda.
      • v 3 mths ago
Government funded theoretically means citizen funded (in our case banking cartel loan funded and repaid with more debt currency). Honestly, I think I'd prefer that "government" research concerning the climate, the environment and my water supply funded by my tax dollars rather than the very industries my government is supposed to regulate, industries whose only allegiance lay with it's shareholders, not it its stakeholders. Industries are allowed to exist because they serve a purpose, not for their own sake, and certainly not for a population of shareholders - no matter how wealthy or powerful. The moment that beneficial purpose is eclipsed by a negative outcome that outweighs the benefits of any given industry, that industry is no longer legitimate, and no amount of trickery will overcome the fact that the stakeholders of that industry will put it to an its end the moment it stops serving any beneficial purpose.

I'm sorry, sorry I got caught.
    • markp  •  3 mths ago
IF the science is good; then there should be no fear or aversion to public debate and skepticism. That it is otherwise, makes one wonder.
      • SW 3 mths ago
I guess the only other variable is the millions and millions corporations are spending to mislead the public so they aren't held accountable for their destruction of the environment.
      • markp 3 mths ago
        Not really.
      • ThomasR 3 mths ago
really, Markp? You don't think there are uneducated hicks out there that buy into whatever is fed them? If the Koch Bros are spending millions to deceive everyone to further their agenda, someone is believing it.

Some have had the rational debate while other religious like zealots will not accept the conclusion.
    • Marxismsucks  •  3 mths ago
"(S) et back any prospects of the country having the 'rational public debate' that he wrote...is so desperately needed" ?!?! Hey Andy, AL GORE ENDED THE DEBATE ALREADY, OR HAVEN'T YOU HEARD? These people are off the walls kooks who are resorting to criminal behavior to shut down DEBATE. These people are Ecofascist, they are doing the same thing NAZIs did in the 1930s. Nothing is going to stop the fraud of AGW from slowly coming apart.

Buggrthat says " Climate change, like world wide global warming, only occurs when one or more of the many climate drivers change."

Guess what....it's always changing. Go look at a global temperature history (besides the phony and defunct hockey stick) and look at the last 1,000, 10,000, 100,000, 500,000 and 1 million years. The only thing that is constant is change. But this tme we're supposed to believe it's human-caused.

And BTW Buggr, while your at it why don't you tell us what the perfect global temperature is supposed to be?
    • Matthew  •  3 mths ago
I would love to hear an open debate on the causes of climate change, but one said is only interest in silencing the other side.
    • Blackfire64  •  3 mths ago
Too bad that Stephanie Pappas didn't bother to report that the faked memo was created AFTER Gleick committed identity theft and wire fraud, making his claim that the memo inspired him to commit federal felonies obviously dishonest.
    • MP  •  3 mths ago
So where were you libtards during the last ice-age and who to blame on that.....the Earth is going to do what it wants to do on its journey through space and there is no control over it. NONE. It's all bull.

the media should be held accountable for the drivel they publish as news. reasonable people on both sides of this issue are sick and tired of being lied to by the media, which is more concerned with ratings than the well being of the people they report to

Many Scientists believe that the earth is warming, However, it is an entirely false statement that most scientist believe it is man-made. Fact: Most scientist don't think it is mostly man-made gw. GW alarmist will not even discuss natural GW. Nixon, Reagan, and Bush Sr actually did more for the environmental improvement than any other recent presidents. I agree that we should be good stewards and reduce as much pollution as we can by responsible and practical means. But this knee-jerk lying corrupt power-grabbing GW propaganda needs to cease if there is ever going to be an intelligent discussion about short-term, mid-term, and long-term strategies. The best solutions will definitely come from the private sector. Far too many of govt environmental policies are really environmentally sound oe well thought out. One major thing we need to do is stop sending jobs to China. Until we get someone in office who will really address this we are not going to change the world. This administration has sent more money and jobs to China than any before.

Politics are completely undermining the field of science in global warming and medicine...honestly any strong opinion on the global warming issue is likely to be inaccurate. I do believe there is strong movement of propaganda to make climate change look like a complete joke which is unfortunate but admittedly it goes both ways.

"Peter Gleick, the president of the Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment, and Security in Oakland, Calif."

Makes you wonder about the judgement of this institute if their own president is willing to disregard integrity in an effort to promote his own agenda.

Eric1: "the ONLY document that Heartland has NOT verified as true is a memo with a summary of one meeting. All the REST, inclding the evil plot to feed scientific LiES to schoolchildren have been ADMITTED."

You are either a complete brainwashed imbecile or a liar or both, because it is the forged document that contains the supposed incriminating comments. What a tool.

One more data point indicating that Agw is more political than science. GW is proven. Agw, so far, is speculation.
