Prominent Greek fashion designer dead in Athens

Veteran Greek fashion designer Michalis Aslanis found dead in his Athens apartment

ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- Greek police say Michalis Aslanis, one of the country's most prominent fashion designers, has been found dead in his Athens apartment.

His death Wednesday comes a week after Aslanis told a Greek newspaper that he had been "ruined" by close aides who allegedly stole large sums of money from him.

A police official said there was no initial indication of foul play in the designer's death. He spoke on condition of anonymity, citing the country's privacy rules.

Aslanis, 63, was the best known of the old guard of Greek fashion designers, whose reputations were mostly domestically based. He told the Espresso newspaper he had been defrauded by two aides whom he had entrusted with paying his tax and social security bills.

Greece is suffering its worst financial crisis in decades.
