Prosecutor to brief Guantanamo judge on FBI probe

MIAMI (AP) — A U.S. prosecutor is asking the judge in the Sept. 11 case for more time to look into whether an FBI investigation will affect the stalled war crimes trial.

The prosecutor says he confirmed the FBI began a preliminary criminal investigation involving classified information. But Assistant U.S. Attorney Fernando Campoamor Sanchez says he needs 30 days to respond to a defense request to abate proceedings against five Guantanamo prisoners charged with orchestrating the attack on Sept. 11, 2001.

He made the request in a court filing Monday.

The tribunal at the U.S. base in Cuba was halted last week by the revelation that FBI agents questioned a defense team member. Defense lawyers say it creates a potential conflict for them.

The nature of the investigation has not been disclosed.
