    Protest in Calif. after Indian remains unearthed

    SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) — Protesters want construction halted at a California housing development after builders unearthed Native American remains at what is believed to be a 6,000-year-old burial site.

    The Santa Cruz Sentinel (http://bit.ly/pLeczO ) says about 100 people participated in a two-mile march Sunday to demand a halt to construction of 32 homes. Protesters held signs reading, "All cemeteries are sacred" and "No bulldozers on sacred ground."

    Coroner's investigator Naomi Silva says builder KB Homes earlier this month found a partial skull or mandible of a Native American child buried in the grassy open space. A piece of an Indian necklace was also found at the nine-acre site.

    Sunday's demonstration was organized by a group called Save the Knoll, which formed about a week ago after members learned about the remains.

      Culture clash between non- Native American Indian archaeologist who want to study the bones and the respect Native Americans have of the dead.Why doesn't a Native American historian consult woth the archeologits who want to examine the skeletal remains? Human curiousity being what it is - to dig in, explore witout taking into consideration, the other cultures repect for the dead. OOPS! circular reasoning. Will stop here.

      I see no problem with archaeological digs and scientific examination of remains, as long as the remains are treated with respect and properly reburied when the investigation is done. We can learn a lot about the customs and culture of ancient people from examining their remains. Not very many people whine when European remains are found in 300+ year old sites like Jamestown. It's time the Native Americans stopped whining about it, too, and focused on being P.O.'d at the right people: pot hunters who only want to dig up graves for the artifacts to sell on the black market and who could care less about the archaeological and cultural value of the items or the remains they disturb.

      NOTHING is sacred anymore these days. somebody will dig it up in the name of SCIENCE. How would you like it if somebody started digging around your FINAL RESTING PLACE?

      They need to stop digging up native peoples graves for a housing project that no one want's to live in with ghost.
