PS4 Getting Zombie Survival MMO H1Z1

Sony Online Entertainment's free-to-play zombie game H1Z1 is coming to PlayStation 4, the developer confirmed during its recently concluded SOE Live 2014 event. This isn't too much of a surprise, as SOE president John Smedley teased back in May that a PS4 version could happen.

SOE did not announce a release date for the PS4 version of H1Z1.

H1Z1 is not the only free-to-play game from SOE headed to PS4, as Sony announced last year that PlanetSide 2 is coming to the console. After a delay, the game is now expected to launch on the platform later this year (more on that later). SOE also developed DC Universe Online, which is currently available on PS4.

Inspired by DayZ and The Walking Dead, H1Z1 was announced earlier this year. It launches for PC through Steam Early Access later this year, though a specific release date for that version has not been announced. H1Z1 on PS4 will go up against the console version of DayZ, which creator Dean Hall announced last week during Sony's Gamescom briefing.

Also during SOE Live, the company announced that PlanetSide 2 will be available on PS4 later this year as an "early access" game, meaning an unfinished version of the final product. Last month, Sony said it was looking into allowing developers to release in-progress versions of their games. It makes sense that this program, or some version of it, would begin with a Sony-owned game that the company has control of.
