Puerto Rico bus driver accused in sex assault case

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A school bus driver in Puerto Rico has been charged with sexual exploitation in a case involving an 18-year-old mentally disabled student that authorities say he impregnated.

U.S. Attorney Rosa Emilia Rodriguez said Friday that 57-year-old Edwin Maldonado Burgos could face up to 10 years in prison.

Authorities accused Maldonado of picking up the woman at her school in the central town of Orocovis in October 2012 and taking her to a deserted area. Officials said the woman had asked Maldonado to stop the bus so she could use the bathroom and that he sexually assaulted her when she returned.

It was not immediately clear if Maldonado had an attorney.
