Puerto Rico diocese appeals ruling in abuse probe

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — An attorney for a Puerto Rico diocese under investigation for sex abuse allegations has appealed a ruling ordering the release of documents to state prosecutors.

Frank Torres Viada told Notiuno radio station on Thursday that the case is pending and that no documents have been turned over.

A judge rejected a lawsuit filed by the Diocese of Arecibo against the island's justice secretary seeking to block the release of additional information to prosecutors. It says it needs to protect the identity of those who made the allegations and has already provided sufficient information.

The judge gave the diocese two weeks to hand over the information.

The diocese has defrocked six priests accused of sex abuse.
