Puppies left in hot car for 90 minutes in Florida adopted by rescuers who saved them

Three puppies left in a hot car for 90 minutes were adopted by the rescuers who saved them in Florida, officials said.

A security guard working at the Disney Springs shopping center saw the young dogs “in distress” and reached out for help Saturday, May 4, according to Orange County Animal Services.

Three puppies were pulled from a parked car and brought to safety. But sadly, a fourth pup was found unresponsive and had to be euthanized, officials wrote on Facebook and in a news release.

“Every summer we deal with cases like this, where someone runs into a store, the mall or similar venue and opts to leave their pet in the car, assuming it’ll be a short trip,” Diane Summers, animal services manager, wrote in the release. “It’s heartbreaking and infuriating for our staff and animal loving community when pet owners make this mistake as preventable tragedy can and does occur.”

The “Bernedoodle” puppies — a mix between Bernese mountain dog and poodle — were recently bought from a breeder. The new owner left the dogs in a car while having dinner at the shopping plaza, “assuming the covered parking garage and cracking a window would be okay,” officials said.

But animals shouldn’t be alone in a car for any period of time, the National Weather Service has warned, saying “the temperature inside a vehicle can rise very quickly and is just as dangerous for pets as it is for people.”

More about the Florida puppy rescue

The puppies in the Disney Springs case were in the car for about 90 minutes, leading to the rescue. The three surviving animals received medical care and recovered from the incident before firefighters from the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District’s Fire Department adopted them, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

The little ones — now named Jordan, Rose and Rosina — “are said to be doing well and enjoying their new lives with their life-saving and life-changing families,” Matthew Thomas Oberly, a spokesperson for the district, told the newspaper.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is reviewing the case, which was announced about two weeks after animal workers said another puppy was left in a hot car outside a Goodwill store in Orlando. The temperature in that car reached 140 degrees.

Disney Springs is in Lake Buena Vista, near Disney World theme park attractions. In the region, high temperatures have been in the 80s and 90s this month, data from the weather service shows.

Orange County Animal Services and the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District didn’t immediately share additional information with McClatchy News on May 9.
