Quad-core smartphone scene hots up with the LG X3, but not everyone thinks they're a good thing

Smartphones powered by quad-core processors are most likely going to be the thing to have this year, with HTC, Samsung, Fujitsu and others all linked to such devices. LG has now been added to the list following a leak of the X3, which is said to use Nvidia’s Tegra 3 chip.

Despite the slightly uninspiring rendered image of the X3 published by PocketNow.com – it is, after all, yet another monolithic slab – the rumored feature list is considerably more exciting. In addition to the Tegra 3, the X3′s screen will measure 4.7-inches and have a resolution of 1280 x 720, plus there will be an 8-megapixel camera on the rear and a 1.3 megapixel video-call camera on the front, Bluetooth 4.0, 16GB of internal memory and NFC.

Google Android Ice Cream Sandwich will be installed at launch, and a mighty 2000mAh battery will be on hand to keep that massive screen and serious processor running for as long as possible. Although such a battery could have affected the device’s size, the rumor still puts its depth at just 9mm.

With Mobile World Congress fast approaching, the X3 could be one of the stars of the show, however not everyone thinks smartphones need a quad-core processor.

In an interview with TechRadar, Nokia’s Stephen Elop said “You don’t need a quad-core phone unless you want to keep your hands warm in your pocket,” and called the race between manufacturers to always have “times two of whatever” in comparison to others “a constant dilemma in technology.”

If it hasn’t already, the processor and its clock speed looks set to become the new “megapixel race” of the smartphone market. While screen size has a logical tip-over point to where the device becomes simply too large to be called a phone, a processor’s speed has no such limit, just like the amount of megapixels on the camera.

Note the 8-megapixel camera on the X3, the same as the year-old Samsung Galaxy S II and many other devices, yet the screen and the processor are far more cutting-edge. While Mr. Elop may not think quad-core chips are necessary, other manufacturers clearly see them as this year’s major selling point.

How do you figure the iPHone 5 will have quad core, even so iPHone 4s still kills an ything being released.

I would give up 1 core for a much better camera. 8 mp quality in a cell phone is like 1.3 mp in a regular point and shoot dig camera. I hve tried several and they all look crapy. Now that would be something worth waiting for

The big question is does quad core matter in smartphones ? Quad core already isn't that much better than a dual core in a PC where there's more to do, but in a smartphone ? Intel's new single core Medfield design already outperformed most of the dual-core ARM designs. If having 2 cores, and especially 4, doesn't help much, they just suck up power and take up more silicon area and cost more to make.

i would agree that they are plenty fast now. Still, nothing wrong w setting new benchmarks. It may give rise to functionality we did not expect to use in smart phones. In other words we need to keep moving fwd unless market forces stop it.

My phones fast enough thank you, how about you just work on making it both cheaper to buy and cheaper more reliable plans?

To say that phones are powerful enough now is ludicrous.
They need to get MUCH more powerful.
Then they can start to do some of the mid-range tasks that laptops and desktops do.
Only then will mobile computing start to come into its own.
Once Windows 8 comes out, then we will have a better idea of what phones/tablets are capable of.

      What Elop says is silly.
I only hope that he said that because Nokia was well beaten to the market by LG, or because Nokia is well behind with their own.
If this is truly how he feels, and this is how he leads his company, then Nokia will be heading for SERIOUS trouble.
