Queen Elizabeth, Kate to team up for royal event

LONDON (AP) — Queen Elizabeth II has a new sidekick for royal events: The Duchess of Cambridge.

The upcoming appearances with the queen mark another foray into the public eye for the former Kate Middleton, who is stepping up her royal duties while her husband Prince William is deployed as a helicopter search-and-rescue pilot in the remote Falkland Islands.

Buckingham Palace officials said Monday the duchess will join the queen and Prince Charles' wife Camilla on March 1 on a visit to a new restaurant at the luxury department store Fortnum and Mason. The royals are expected to have tea at the London landmark, known for its well-stocked food hall, and unveil a plaque commemorating efforts to renovate the Piccadilly Circus neighborhood.

The following week, the duchess will travel to the English city of Leicester with the queen and her husband, Prince Philip, as part of Diamond Jubilee celebrations to mark the queen's 60 years on the throne.

The duchess made her solo debut last week visiting a show of the late Lucian Freud's paintings in London.

The queen, 85, and Philip, 90, are planning an extensive tour of the United Kingdom during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, including visits to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Philip is expected to keep that schedule despite his heart scare, which required a stent over Christmas to keep his coronary arteries open.

They will not be traveling overseas as they did in earlier jubilees, but will send their children and grandchildren on official visits to many Commonwealth countries.

The festivities reach a climax in early June with a flotilla on the River Thames, a gala concert in front of Buckingham Palace and a carriage procession through the streets of London following a service of thanksgiving.

Many of the special Diamond Jubilee events — like the river pageant — are being paid for by charitable foundations set up to raise money for occasion. The cost of the Jubilee concert is being paid for by the BBC, which will also have licensing rights.

Officials said Monday that featured musicians — including former Beatle Paul McCartney and singer Elton John — are performing for free.

In addition, the government in 2010 set aside 1 million pounds ($1.58 million) in additional spending for Jubilee-related events even as it reduced or froze the royal budget in other areas.

I think Diana would be pleased as Kate carries on her duties.

so Diana would not. Diana tried to be very courteous and likeable to the Queen, and the Queen just thought she was a bytsh

Actually, the Queen, in the beginning, saw Diana as an heir-maker. It was only after Diana divorced Charles that the Queen started to see what Diana was all about -- someone who cared about people and wanted to do good in the world. I think Kate has that trait as well but won't be able to exercise it until later on in her life. Her main priority in the next two years, according to royal protocol, will be to produce an heir. Remember that Diana became pregnant just two and a half months after marrying Charles. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be expected to start a family after the London Olympics are over.

Kate will be a breath of fresh air to a stale monarchy. Charles and Camilla are old and boring already. It will be a pleasant change to follow William and/or Kate. I'd love to see them become King and Queen of England some day.

I'm beginning to think Queen Elizabeth II will rule for 100 years or more. Charles may not survive her. In that event (unlikely though it may be) William will become King.

John and for those who are always making remarks about 'the real' world and 'important' things happening. Can there not be HAPPY occurrences in the news? I, for one, am going through a downsizing after 9 years with my present company, health issues and certainly facing grim prospects work-wise...but hearing pleasant, feel good items in the news gives me a distraction and hope for a better tomorrow. Why does it all have to be doom and gloom?

Sorry to hear about your bad luck at work. That sucks.

I'm all for "happy news", but this isn't it. Royal-worship (much like celebrity-worship) is just stupid.

John -- not royle worship....just interest in what is going on in the world.

@Jan, learn to spell, please. Oh, and learn to stop fooling yourself too. This isn't international news. It is celebrity nonsense.

Let Well lets see. She served in WWII, her mother and father refused to leave the people of London during the blitzkrieg, she promised to serve her "whold life" to the people. She will never hand the thrown over to Charles. She is there until she dies. I think that she had done a remarkable job and derserves all the accolades that 60 years of service should bring her.

It's "throne" (monarch's chair), not "thrown" (as in - the ball was thrown).

Such pleasant news for a change, and how nice that the Duchess is/will be learning from a Queen who has never made one public mistake, and truly is the epitome of grace and dignity. Camilla is also known for her graceousness and the Royal family adores her. Having seen her in person I can testify that she is very, very pretty with lovely skin and hair. It is a pity the press has always been so unkind. There ARE reasons that Charles and his sons adore her.

Wonderful news; as long as the news media does not screw everything up as usual; it will allow direction and guidance to the people!

I wonder what Kate calls the Queen and Prince Phlip - I know Wills and Harry call her Gran or Grannny - but I can't see that being protocol for Kate. Anyone know?

If she is smart she will stick with "Your Majesty" as a sign of respect! And let the Queen dictate what she wants to be called.

Everyone that says they don't care or some fashion of that................. why read the story?
    • Albert  •  3 mths ago
I would suspect she prefers to be called Kate rather than the Duchess of Cambridge or Duchess Catherine. It seems to bother some here more than it probably does her.

I'm available should they need some common company. And I have a nice hat, too.

      Cool that they get along.

When is US press going to quit referring to the Duchess of Cambridge as 'Kate Middleton' or the 'former Kate Middleton'. How disrespectful! But then our crass 4th Estate has never been known for it's eloquence!
    • Patrick  •  3 mths ago
I thought the title was misleading: I read it as Queen Elizabeth and Kate from "Kate plus eight".
I am surprised that the press corp is still referring to Duchess Catherine as Kate Middleton. It seems a little disrespectful, unless everyone still thinks of her as Kate.

It's looking more like Charles will be passed over.

I've always liked this Elizabeth as much as the first one, and no, I'm not being sarcastic.

Must be something to do with "Imperial math"; the rest of the world knows the JUBILEE is the 50th anniversary.
