#1 Lovely story. And for someone in their 90s, very nice writing.

Were you expecting "Ye Olde Reasons Wherefore Marriage Abounded?"
      • Toeless_Joe_Jackson 3 mths ago
You obviously don't know many people in their 90s. Memories start fading and words become harder to use. Writing becomes very difficult.

      Joke of the Day:

About a year had passed since my amicable divorce, and I decided it was time to start dating again. Unsure how to begin, I thought I’d scan the personals column of my local newspaper. I came across three men who seemed like they’d be promising candidates. A couple of days later, I was checking my answering machine and discovered a message from my ex-husband. “I was over visiting the kids yesterday,” he said. “While I was there I happened to notice you had circled some ads in the paper. Don’t bother calling the guy in the second column. I can tell you right now it won’t work out. That guy is me.”

My "how I met him" story: I was in my first year of ROTC when my first Dining Out (formal military ball event thing) came up. Well, I didn't have a date, had never had a boyfriend, but I was determined to go. Got a utterly gorgeous dress for it. Little did I know that one of the young men in his last year of ROTC had his date back out on him, and our Colonel had told him he must have a date or else. So he went to the seating coordinator and asked her for a list of the women going solo. It was in alphabetical order, and my last name started with a B. Since I was the first one on the list, I was the first one he called. That was 25 years ago, we've been married for 23, and have two adult sons.

Talk about fate! Good thing your name didn't start with a 'Z.'

Another reason not to play strip poker is that now we have camera phones, Twitter and Facebook, and you can't be too careful. Thank goodness those things didn't exist when I was in college or big trouble would have ensued. lol.

#3 That's a cool poem, Abby. Almost as good as my favorite about the girl from Nantucket.

I guess it'd be boring if we had them all the time, but L#1 is the type of story we all need to see once in a while. Three cheers for the pair and their family.

How we met: The day I started working for a big company two guys from their social club dropped in to tell me about their activities. I kept running into one of them at company and social functions. At one Christmas party he asked if he could give me a kiss. It was the sweetest kiss I'd ever had in my life. Years later, when we were both single, we met again at a dance. He told me how glad he was that his buddy had dragged him to my office to meet the cute new girl. I dragged him home and that was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

As Valentine's Day is a good day for many and not a good day for many others; perhaps because it is all about couples and you are single and have no one knocking on your door so to speak; or perhaps due to the loss of a loved one; I have wishes for both groups...

If it is a good day for you: Happy Valentine's Day!

If it is not a good day for you: May your day be blessed in some unexpected and wonderful way!

Here's my love story (32 years later, and counting.)

I was sitting on a stool in The Backstage, a bar owned by Willy Nelson in Austin Texas. A guy tapped me on the shoulder and asked for directions (he was really looking to hook up with my roommate, but she was busy.) I turned around and saw a Yankee in a Pendelton shirt. He looked like Tom Sawyer, in that aw-shucks-mam kind of way. We chatted for a bit, he bought me a ginger ale, we listened to Willy and parted ways. I told my roommates that night I had just met my future husband. They laughed. I hadn't given him my phone number and he didn't even live in Austin. So a week later we all went to the library to look at out of town phone books and found his number. We invited him and his roommate to Thanksgiving dinner. He came, stayed, and asked me to marry him two days later. Never looked back.

So, Happy Valentine's Day, Tom. You're still The One.

      Happy Valentines Day.

Nothing you can buy, is worth more than the love you give.

I was going to tell Abby and everybody in Abbyland Happy Valentine's Day but I read the poems and decided I can't compete. Oh well, I'll say it anyway - Happy Valentine's Day!

So Abby does know we exist! I figured she really didn't pay attention to the Abbdicts in Abbyland!!

Here's my love story - my wife and I were set up as a blind date by our mothers, who were taking a pottery class together. I was an hour late from getting lost in a freak April snowstorm, she was sure I had blown her off. We spent the day dressed up fancy at the art museum, then I took her to a nice restaurant where she disappeared into the restroom for 10 minutes. I was wondering if she had escaped out the window. (Actually, she was sick from the rich Portobello soup.) She asked for an hour to go home and feel better. We spent the rest of the evening at a local bar (the first I had been in since getting sober) playing darts and foosball. Twenty two years later, we will be celebrating our twentieth wedding anniversary in September. So kids, blind dates do sometimes work out!

      Dear Abby,
We trash your advice. We tease you mercilessly. We accuse you of being senile or dead.
And what do you do? You write us a loving poem. True, it's not a very good poem, but it came from your heart and shows your grace and good humor.
      Happy Valentine's Day, Abby!
      Love, GYON

Abby can be stern but also so sweet
      Abby counsels both the selfish and meek;
We trek to Abbyland both night and day
Just to see what she has to say.
We read about Mom, we read about Dad
We read about girlfriends who think they's been had.
      We cringe when we see those pennies from heaven;
We love three letters - but never see seven!
We discuss morals, vices, and tasing,
We say kick out the boyfriends who sit around lazing.
Sometimes we agree, sometimes we poke fun
But we all know Dear Abby's Number One!
'Cause where else can strangers and trolls and friends
Voice their opinions from day's beginning to end?
We even kid Abby about the read-on day
But I'm sure she knows that's just our way--
Of letting her know she's not off the hook
We want more letters - like hubbies who cook,
Grandmas and plane tickets, the empty nest syndrome
A girl and her bra, the grad who won't leave home.
So bring on the lonely, the happy and sad
      Give us the good ones, the ridiculous and bad;
A good wedding letter - bridezilla and all,
Should we say 'bless you' or nothing a'tall?
We even go off-topic, some silly, some not
Some days our fellow Abdicts are all we've got.
Let the internet go down and we really start to fret
How far behind in comments will we all get?!
But never fear, Abby, we just want to say
      YOU'RE THE GREATEST ABBY!
      HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!!!

      Dear Abby:
This site has created a group like no other. Support, information, and some sibling like harassment. Thanks for bringing us together. I might pull together a poem later.
