QUICK TAKE: McCain to GOP: ‘Waterboarding Is Torture’

    < style="background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin: 8px;">

Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the 2008 Republican presidential standard-bearer, has taken pains to avoid weighing in on the 2012 GOP primary. But on Sunday, McCain said he was "very disappointed" that some Republicans defended waterboarding at Saturday’s National Journal/CBS debate in South Carolina.

“Waterboarding is torture,” McCain, who was a prisoner of war and tortured during the Vietnam War, said via Twitter.

On Saturday, Herman Cain and Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota both endorsed waterboarding as an interrogation technique. President Obama banned its use at the beginning of his term, calling it cruel and counterproductive.

“I would return to that policy,” Cain said.

“I would be willing to use waterboarding,” Bachmann added.

On Sunday, Obama said Cain and Bachmann are wrong.

"Waterboarding is torture," the president said from Hawaii. "It's contrary to America's traditions. It's contrary to our ideals."

Two other GOP candidates, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, said at the debate they believe waterboarding is torture.

Correction: An earlier version of this story had the incorrect day Obama made his remarks. He spoke at a news conference in Hawaii on Sunday.

      Thank you John.

      Easy to test.
Waterboard Cain and Bachmann. Ask them afterwards if they still believe it's not torture.
      • Greg 6 mths ago
Or we could declassify govt intelligence and see what terrorism was avoided and ask those who were spared if waterboarding is torture.
      • Ali 6 mths ago
or we could waterboard Herman and see if he groped all those ladies in the 90s
      • pce20 6 mths ago
        Greg lives in fantasy land.

being like our enemies, means we are... like them!
      not better...
Stick that in your 'exceptional' pipe and smoke it... idiots
So support torture all you want, but don't try to talk to me about your support of "American exceptionalism" while you are advocating the morals and tactics of the enemy.
      • Adela Juliana 6 mths ago
        The majority of us
        is not like them
        America is special

        Soul,
Pretend the moral high ground when your son or daughter is about to have their head cut off or set on fire and you have a person in your control that can help you stop it. Go ahead mister moral high ground tell us how you would allow your loved ones to die in agony to continue your beloved sanctimoniousness. Its easy to be mister moral high ground when its other peoples loved ones dying for you.
      • Natasha 6 mths ago
L1, guess you forgot that torture doesn't generate helpful information, and in fact, does quite the opposite. So when it's your son or daughter in danger, and you choose to waterboard and end up having time wasted to save them on bogus info, you can blame yourself later.

Cain and Bachmann, both claim to be Christian, yet both are in favor of torture or helping those who are the most vulnerable.
      • bopdaddy 6 mths ago
A lot of people claim to be Christian but are in for a surprise come judgement day
      • Anonymous 6 mths ago
Yeah, guess they skipped parts of the bible. Mainly, any parts with Jesus in them.
      • Irene P 6 mths ago
God spoke tp Cain, Bachmann,Perry, who said that God did not have a sense of humour.

Time for the GOP to change their name to the DONNER PARTY......if you locked them all in a closet, a week later all that would be left is a pile of clothes and a few clumps of hair

        ROFLMFAO!!!
I damned near wet myself on that one!
        So VERY true!!!

Torture is being a Republican watching the Republicans debate once a week
      • Natasha 6 mths ago
I don't know, I liken it to an hour of comedy. There's no way Americans would replace Obama with any of them. Outside of Tea Party groups, the rest of us see how completely delusional they are.
      • Sugar2 6 mths ago
Yopu'll be eating your words and crying like a baby come January 2013! We heard this crap during the midterm elections and how'd that work out for ya??
      • Neil 6 mths ago
That was before America got a taste of Tea Party-types in power and found out how useless they really are.
    • Richard  •  6 mths ago
The intelligence that lead to bin Laden being caught was not obtained by torture.

Generally speaking the only thing torture is good for is extracting false confessions for propaganda purposes. McCain, being a former POW, of course experienced this first hand.

We, we being the United States of America, have tried both foreign and American citizens as torturers for using the technique known as waterboarding. Just because our torture isn’t as bad as another nations methods doesn’t make our torture not torture. The United States of America is suppose to lead with character first and be a moral light in a world of darkness. However, we can’t do this is we are breaking the very laws we’ve agreed to because we want to take short cuts to get the information we want instead of the information we need. Waterboarding is torture, we have tried foreign citizens for waterboarding our POWs and have tried Americans citizens for doing the same to prisoners of other nations (case of waterboarding by an American to a Filipino in the 60’s). You might not like that enhanced interrogation is torture but you can’t ignore the truth of it.
    • Storm  •  6 mths ago
GOP knows waterboarding is torture. It happened on the watch of their commander-in-thief, so they must support it. Wrong is wrong when committed by others, wrong is right when committed by Republicans. Unprincipled family values Christian liars.
    • jimbob  •  6 mths ago
Again, Bachmann is confused - She thinks waterboarding is like surfing .......
    • Bif Bowzer  •  6 mths ago
I think we should waterboard Cain until he supplies a list of all the women he's assaulted over the years...and Bachmann?...Hell, that nutbag can't even spell it.
Not a huge fan of McCain, but he would be one I'd listen to about torture...not some pizza boy or a fundie idiot.
    • Matthew  •  Austin, United States  •  6 mths ago
If waterboarding is not torture...and legal, then heck...cops should be able to do it at traffic stops...or to obtain testimomy in matters of domestic violence...or whenever they like. I mean, according to people here, it doesn't kill ya. It's cheap. All you need are handcuffs, a rag, and a gallon of water. No need to drug test....waterboard! No need to do a breathalyzer....waterboard!
    • William  •  6 mths ago
what did romney say -- that it is and is not torture?
    • Buffalo+Gal+Hates+Ron+Pau ...  •  Midland City, United States  •  6 mths ago
      Who would Jesus waterboard?
    • Natasha  •  6 mths ago
I am saddened, though not surprised, to see people like Cain and Bachmann thinking it would be ok if Al Queda captured some of our troops and waterboarded them. Besides their other many faults, this alone proves they should not be commander-in-chief.
    • J D  •  6 mths ago
If anyone knows what torture is, it is John McCain. Even when you graduate at the bottom of your class, you can learn what torture is after a few years in the Hanoi Hilton.
    • mesays  •  6 mths ago
If McCain says it's torture, who are we to argue?????
    • BryanT  •  6 mths ago
Ever time I think McCain has nothing left to contribute he does something like this. There are very few elected officals who have been tortured themselves, we should listen to them.
    • Ronald  •  Akron, United States  •  6 mths ago
LMAO: Now watch all the extreme nitwits start their RINO claims against McCain. When you dont have a legal argument for or against , then call the dude a RINO. Its crybaby stuff along the same lines as always whining about the media being on the liberal side. The extremist right wing is so wrong so often, that it then seems like the media turns liberal but in reality, the media just prints the truth about them.

This advice is coming from a man that has been there! Wackman and Cain are just catering to the few who believe it is OK to torture. Just like the Nazi's! Since when does Christian virtues condon torture? It has been proven that anyone under torture will admit to almost anything just to stop the torture. I know I would! If we are to be the light of the world - Let's not let this country stoop to these degrading tactics.
