Racy Israeli Photo Shoot Targets ‘Anti-Women’ Sentiment Among Ultra-Orthodox Jews

    bellemode

BelleMode, an Israeli fashion magazine, is catching some attention for a provocative photo spread featured in its February issue. To protest against what it sees as anti-women sentiment, the photo shoot showcases women and men in scantily clad (i.e. see-through) garb. The action has been taken, apparently, in a show of protest against attacks and actions that have been taken by ultra-conservative Orthodox Jews in Israel.

As the Blaze reported in December, a television crew was was attacked and an 8-year-old girl, who now says she's afraid to walk to school, was purportedly spat on and cursed at by ultra-Orthodox (Heredim) Jews in Israel. Here's what we initially reported, via AP/The Blaze:

Naama Margolese is a pony-tailed, bespectacled second-grader who is afraid of walking to her religious Jewish girls school for fear of ultra-Orthodox extremists who have spat on her and called her a whore for dressing “immodestly.” [...]

...[the] ultra-Orthodox population has erected street signs calling for the separation of sexes on the sidewalks, dispatched “modesty patrols” to enforce a chaste female appearance and hurled stones at offenders and outsiders. Walls of the neighborhood are plastered with signs exhorting women to dress modestly in closed-necked, long-sleeved blouses and long skirts.

    bellemode

The BelleMode photo shoot, which features women and men in clothing that is favored by the Haredim (ultra-Orthodox Jews), will likely cause some angst among the already on-edge cohort.

Gawker has more about the clothing being worn by the models and the setting that was chosen for the images:

The spread features a number of scantily clad men and women posing provocatively (and sexily!) in outfits that resemble the clothing favored by Haredim, except with some minor differences. Like, some of the shirts are see-through. And some of the models have forgotten to wear their pants.

Adding to the provocation, all of the photos are set inside a bus, a cheeky nod to the ultra-Orthodox community's rabid efforts to maintain a strict separation of sexes on buses that pass through their neighborhoods. Additionally, in one of the photos the female model appears with tape over her mouth, but no one ever accused fashion industry types of getting their point across in a subtle manner.

Here's a behind the scene's video (in Hebrew) that shows the photo shoot being conducted (caution: photo shoot includes some provocative poses, but no nudity):

A translation of the video, via Gawker, corroborates its aim:

The subject of a woman's appearance is very bothersome in the media. My feeling is, that in the fashion industry, women have a lot of power, they are at the center. We took that power and decided to centralize/funnel it into a fashion production - that's both inspired and against a woman's appearance, to bring all the stuff that's most irritating to us — the bus banishments, silencing of singing - to bring it and make a production that walks a fine line between being very closed and modest to ripped wide open and sexy. As long as it's being done in good taste and doesn't harm the woman, I don't see any problem, that there will be fashion productions. Even if it's a little sexy - it only attracts and is interesting. When there is a subject like this - it's worth it to be even more cheeky and provocative. So the message is heard through the power of a woman.

Considering the intense debate between mainstream Israelis and the Heredim, there's no telling how much drama these images may cause.

The fundamentalist Jews sound like fundamentalist Muslims, which are both models for the way fundamentalist Christians are acting. Lord, save me and the rest of us from your followers. If there is any advertisement for atheism - it's religion. Religion has become little more than a justification for cruelty, exclusion, narrow-mindedness. Ya, ya, I know religious people do a lot of wonderful, helpful things in the world, and since my sister is a nun, I can honestly say - some of my best friends are religious. I left the church years ago because I think they are wrong about birth control, and, my observation is - most religious organizations do betray anti-women sentiments. I don't mean to sound disrespectful - well, maybe I do - I just wish they would go off somewhere and actually pray about what they are doing. It is disgusting, hypocritical, and mean.

I too share your sentiments about fundamentalist religious groups. It is very hypocritical for fundamentalist Christians to point fingers and Muslims and so on and so forth when they treat women almost in the exact same manner. However, do not lose your faith...remember God sent the Word, Man made religion. I dont like religion because it is manipulative and many times stems from misinterpreted ancient script. But as long as you know who created you and you love your fellow man as if he were you, you have nothing to worry about. Good luck in your life's journey.

A little late, but thanks for your kind wishes. I really believe God is open-minded and wants us to share eternity. it makes no sense that God would want to play a bunch of trivial-mind-twisting games with us. Good luck to you also.

just goes to show, the extremes of ALL religions are equally mental. To them it is not about God, it is about control.
      • Kuel 3 mths ago
To be completely fair you have to include southern Baptists to your "equally mental" list.
      • Ben 3 mths ago
are you kidding me? They are the POSTER CHILD of religious insanity.

Baptists can't hold a candle next to the evangelist Christians. "Born again's" are just further down the food chain.

Looks like the moslems and the jews have VERY much in common. So why can't they all get along and respect eachother.......they seem to have the same dysfunctions. I've often heard that people see things in others that are similar to their own shorcomings and defects of character is what causes them to hate others so much. Look at jews and blacks....each trying to scream louder that they are victims.
      • No surprise - Obama lies 3 mths ago
They have little in common, fool. Haven't heard of and Jews stoning women to death, honor killings, beheadings, etc. Give me a Jew neighbor rather than a Muslim any day.
      • k.s 3 mths ago
they are taught to hate by politicians. It is no where in religious teaching to hate other religions. In the past Jews, Muslims and Christians all live together peacefully in the Middle East and elsewhere until European influences changed it all.

Wow, No Surprise. You don't know what you are talking about. Do you have any idea what happens to an OJ girl who dishonors her family? Stoning would be preferable.....

The Hassidim/Lubavitchers and the Wahabi/Taliban are scary close in their ideas of women's place in the world.
      • MikeB 3 mths ago
Actually, Lubavitchers are actually just one group of Hassidic Jews, and they're fairly liberal and open-minded in many respects compared to other Hassidic sects because they believe in outreach to unaffiliated Jews. Their synagogues and community centers welcome all types, and women who don't adhere to what's considered the "modest" norm in other hassidic communities and show up wearing jeans, etc. will not be made to feel uncomfortable or scolded. Each hassidic/haredi community has its own customs and standards of what's considered "modest" or "immodest" and Lubavitch (aka "Chabad") hassidim, although within their community women wear skirts and married women cover their hair, are not considered strict by the measuring-stick of others.

I don't see a lot of difference between these ultra-orthodox Jewish nutcases and the Taliban.

Ultra orthodox Jews are intolerant the same way ultra orthadox Muslims, Christians, Hindus, etc are. Basically ultra-orthodox/fundamentalist anything =intolerant.
    • mimi  •  Pleasanton, California  •  3 mths ago
The ultra-orthodox Jewish men are truly weird and abnormal. And since Israel is supposedly a secular country, their actions against that little schoolgirl should be severely punished. She is now afraid to walk to school. Scaring children, like those men have done, should be roundly condemned by all human beings. How can an 8 year old be dressed 'provocatively'? What is sexy about an 8 year old child? Those men are obviously afraid of women. Perhaps they should be banned from civilization?

Modesty patrols? Don't these idiots have anything better to do with their time than harass schoolgirls?
      • BDT 3 mths ago
I think we should cut off all funding to the middle east and let them kill one another. We send money to one country and anger another. Let them duke it out for a change.

I can't see the difference between ultra orthodox jew men and muslim men following quran when it comes to how they treat women.... can you?
    • Travis  •  3 mths ago
The ultra-conservative religious people are EXACTLY the same whether it's Islam, Judaism or Christianity that's being discussed. The only difference is what make-believe deity they're using to justify their repression of women.

Every religion has it's crazies. Muslims have Al Qaeda, Jews have Heredim, and Christians have Wesboro Baptist.

Religious extremists of every ilk rant about their right to religious freedom...and I'm all for it. Let them have it...at the same time their chosen lunatic obsessions should be kept to themselves. They have no right inflicting their madness on others - religious zealots are at the core of all that is most contentious among humanity. A spiritual life is something quite different from religious obsession full of bizarre rituals, clothing, demands and rules. All male dominated because every religion we know today achieved its place through violence, force, aggression, murder, war, power mongering...male egocentric perversion. If people want to dupe themselves and sacrifice their lives to it for whatever reason...have at it. But it's a fools obsession and no way the extremists should be allowed to dictate the rules to the rest of us who know better.

Why would anyone want to believe in a god that would think spitting at a little girl was a good thing? Or a god that would force all women to hide their faces in public? Or murder daughters for wearing the wrong clothes? Or discriminate against gay people because they were born different. If nobody believed in gods like that they would just cease to exist, because they only live in people's minds anyway.

Any Ultra of anything is a cancer to mankind. I can honestly tell you now, that they will always be another group to fight this cancer now and in the future and for all time to come. We must learn that we are not God's judges to one and all and till we all get to know this, the better for one and all. Until such time, many an innocent life will be lost just because they are stupidly ignorant of what lies beyond.
