Rail car catches fire near downtown Fort Mill. Detours in place during afternoon commute

Traffic detours were in place near downtown Fort Mill Thursday during the afternoon commute after a railroad car caught fire, officials said.

The areas affected after 4 p.m. were near Spratt and White streets below the southern end of Main Street, said Capt. Steven Bivins of the Fort Mill Police Department. Main Street remains open, he said.

Officials closed the Spratt/White streets intersection and diverted traffic around it, according to Bivins and a posting on the police department social media pages.

Drivers are asked to use the Fort Mill Bypass to avoid the area, police said.

Drivers heading east into Fort Mill from Interstate 77 and U.S. 21 can turn left onto Main Street, Bivins said.

Bivins said officials believe the fire involved paper-based products and is not to be hazardous.

Officers canvassed the affected area near the fire to advise residents about the incident, he said.
