Randy Travis arrested for public intoxication

SANGER, Texas (AP) — Country singer Randy Travis has apologized after being arrested on a charge of public intoxication outside a North Texas church.

Denton County sheriff's spokesman Tom Reedy says police in the town of Sanger arrested Travis early Monday after spotting a vehicle parked in front of a church and finding an open bottle of wine and Travis smelling of alcohol.

Reedy says Travis, whose hits include "Forever and Ever, Amen," was brought to the Denton County jail about 1:30 a.m. and released six hours later.

The singer, who lives in the small town of Tioga near Sanger, apologized in a statement to The Associated Press "for what resulted following an evening of celebrating the Super Bowl."

Travis, who launches a concert tour Friday, says he's "committed to being responsible and accountable."

The laws are made to protect us, today's police use it to hurt us. In 1969 I was 16, my buddy and I were in my 57 Chevy when we were pulled over by these two police and they found our case of beer in the trunk, we were sitting in the back seat of the police car where one officer said to the other "we don't arrest people for empty beer cans" I sat there for 10 seconds and it hit me! I said I left my coat in the trunk and asked if I could get it and they said OK, I dragged my buddy back to the trunk and we pop-ed tops and poured 24 cans of beer on the street and returned to the police car and the officers said well, lets go check the evidence and we all walked back to the trunk and he said "look no beer" Then told us to go home. I learned something that night that's still with me 50 years later, good police work. It says to "Protect and Serve" Serve the good people and protect against the bad people and to know the difference. Good luck Randy

No apology necessary. The police could have taken him home or called a friend. I've done it lots of times. If they had the time to arrest and book they had the time to call a cab.

He drove there drunk. They could have arrested him for DUI. They let him off easy.

Why don't some of you people read the whole story, it doesn't say in this story that he was arrested for DUI it says public intoxication. There is nothing in here that says his keys were in the ignition or anything like that. You can walk out of a bar stewed and be arrested for public intox. just because he was in a car really means nothing unless you're in control of it. I don't know why this is such a news article? Go to a rock concert and some musicians there will be drunk and disorderly on stage.

Mr. Steve when you claim to be a Christian and try to walk the according to bible scripture, believe me alot of folks want to know.
      • Stephen 3 mths ago
It is not a valid news topic no matter his faith! Everyone makes mistakes but not everyone has to be exposed and judged which as a Christian you should NOT do let the man be a human and keep belief out of it because it is not relative to the topic at hand. the headline wasnt "Self Proclaimed Christian Entertainer Assested Drunk Near a Church" the man made a mistake and a choice it is not news worthy just because of his fame.

In my day, the 60's and early 70's, the cops would have taken me home and called a friend to drive my car home. Of course that was way before computers and all the other watch dog devices. But I guess it's all for the best.

Can happen to any one of us Mr. Travis. Don't need to apologize for being human. At least you were not behind the wheel of a vehicle endangering someone's life.

This has happened to everyone who drinks all of a sudden you realize you have had a bit to much to drive so being a good person and not wanting to harm someone you do the right thing and you pull over into a parking lot to sleep it off before going home. To me he did the right thing here.

      News story?
      So what?
My neighbor was publicly drunk yesterday.
      Why didnt they arrest him?
    • Andrew  •  3 mths ago
let the man live without feeling as though he needs to apologize. he wasn't driving, he was parked and probably asleep.
    • Wingnut  •  Washington, District of Columbia  •  3 mths ago
Why is this news? He wasn't driving, wasn't in an accident, wasn't vandalizing anything, wasn't peeing in public...
    • Marilyn  •  3 mths ago
What a bunch of nasties you people are. Oh my gosh, someone got caught with a bottle of booze in the car after celebrating the Super Bowl. Every cop int he country could have made his quota for the year by parking near a bar yesterday. You did read the part about being polite etc., didn't you?

Hilarious! A "sanger" arrested in a town named Sanger. You can't make this crap up.
    • Jan  •  3 mths ago
So this just goes to show that Mr. Travis is human, and makes mistakes like the rest of us. He at least apologized concerning the incident, that makes a person, when they can admit they made a mistake.

What was there reason for the search? They search all parked cars?
    • Mike  •  3 mths ago
Should of called him a cab. Shame on the cops.

The compassion on this thread is overwhelming. Some of you people are really sad. Randy is a recovering alcoholic and has had a struggle with that for years. I know hes not as stellar as the rest of you are Im sure but Im sure you would cut some slack to Ted kennedy's lifestyle right?.
