Ratings: ABC’s ‘Bachelor’ Hits High; CBS Shows Get Post-Super Bowl Boosts

The CBS Monday dramas — as well as “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” — saw expected lifts one night after the network’s coverage of Super Bowl 50, but it was Fox’s “The X-Files” and ABC’s rising “The Bachelor” that topped the night among young adults.

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, “The Bachelor” (2.4 rating/8 share in adults 18-49, 8.5 million viewers overall) rose 0.2 week to week, winning its two-hour timeslot in 18-49, 25-54, 18-34 and all key female demos. The 2.4 rating represents a season high in the time period for ABC, and there’s a good chance the dating show (currently at 2.445 in the prelims) will finish at a 2.5 in the finals. Closing out the night for ABC was the return of “Castle” (1.1/4 in 18-49, 5.7 million viewers overall), which was in line with its sluggish averages of the fall; last week, the network did nearly as well in the demo (1.0) with a “Bachelor Live” post-show.

At CBS, “Supergirl” (1.8/6 in 18-49, 8.0 million viewers overall) saw a nice 20% spike from last week’s 1.5, which matched its low, placing third in demos for its competitive timeslot. It was followed by “Scorpion” (2.0/6 in 18-49, 11.2 million viewers overall), which was up a tenth from its most recent original to match its top rating since its season premiere last September and stand as the night’s most-watched program overall. Also up was 10 p.m. drama “NCIS: Los Angeles” (1.6/5 in 18-49, 9.7 million viewers overall), which won its hour.

Fox’s “The X-Files” (2.5/8 in 18-49, 8.3 million viewers overall) was down a tenth or two from last week for its lowest score to date, but it currently stands as Monday’s No. 1 program in 18-49, 25-54 (2.5/8) and all male demos. “Lucifer” (1.7/5 in 18-49, 5.5 million viewers overall) is losing its audience at a steeper rate, and likely was impacted by the return to original of “Scorpion”; it placed third for its 9 p.m. hour in most categories and second in men 18-49 (1.7/5).

NBC’s “Superstore” held steady (1.4/5 in 18-49, 5.2 million viewers overall), while “Telenovela” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 3.3 million viewers overall) and “The Biggest Loser” (1.1/4 in 18-49, 3.8 million viewers overall) picked up a tenth apiece.

At CW, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” continues to look stronger (0.4/1 in 18-49, 1.1 million viewers overall), looking likely to finish at a 0.4 for the second straight week after posting nothing but 0.3s for every episode up to that point. At least in the prelims, it out-rated lead-out “Jane the Virgin” (0.3/1 in 18-49, 0.9 million viewers overall), though “Jane” has tended to fare better than “Crazy” in national adjustments by Nielsen.

In late-night on Monday, CBS’ “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” averaged a 0.7 rating among adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with people-meters, up 75% from its performance last Monday (0.4) and a competitive second to NBC’s “Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” (0.9). The CBS program, coming off its live post-Super Bowl telecast which averaged a whopping 21.1 million viewers, also moved ahead of “Tonight Show” in overnight households (2.7 to 2.5), rising 23% from last Monday and its top regular-timeslot result since Oct. 6.

Also for CBS, “Late, Late Show with James Corden” saw improvement in 18-49 (0.3 vs. 0.2 last Monday), but this was merely half what NBC’s competing “Late Night with Seth Meyers” generated in the prelims (0.6). The shows tied in overnight household rating (1.3), with this marking a 30% week-over-week lift for Corden.
