Ratings: ‘The Year’ Helps ABC Edge CBS Atop Tuesday Demo

ABC’s retrospective special of the biggest events and newsmakers of 2014, “The Year,” won both of its hours, doing just enough to hand the network a slight Tuesday primetime demo victory.

CBS finished first in total viewers, airing entirely reruns on the traditionally slow night.

ABC was first in ratings with a 1.1 rating/4 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and first in viewers with an average of 5.2 million, according to preliminary numbers. Following reruns, the first half-hour of “The Year” at 9 p.m. received a 1.1/4 and 4.9 million total viewers. The second half-hour at 9:30 got a 1.1/4 and 5.3 million total viewers. The third half-hour at 10 had a 1.2/4 and 5.7 million viewers. The final half-hour at 10:30 pulled in a 1.1/4 and 5.4 million viewers.

CBS and Univision tied for second in ratings, both with a 1.0/4. CBS was first in viewers with 8.9 million — airing reruns — and Univision finished fourth with 2.7 million.

NBC was fourth in ratings with a 0.7/2 and third in viewers with 3.4 million. The first half-hour of its “One Direction: The TV Special” at 8 got a 0.8/3 and 3.5 million viewers. The second half-hour at 8:30 dipped to a 0.6/2 and 2.7 million viewers. A repeat of the Michael Buble Christmas special followed. Kelly Clarkson’s Christmas special reran after that.

Telemundo and Fox tied for fifth in ratings, both with a 0.5/2. Telemundo edged Fox out for fifth in viewers with 1.35 million; Fox finished sixth with 1.32 million, airing repeats.

The CW was seventh in ratings with a 0.3/1 and in total viewers with 1.2 million, airing reruns.
