Raw Milk Causes Most Illness From Dairy Products: CDC

TUESDAY, Feb. 21 (HealthDay News) -- Raw, or unpasteurized, milk causes 150 times more dairy product-related disease outbreaks than pasteurized milk. And states where the sale of raw milk is legal have twice as many outbreaks as states where it is illegal, according to a new U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study.

"This study shows an association between state laws and the number of outbreaks and illnesses from raw milk products," Dr. Robert Tauxe, deputy director of CDC's division of foodborne, waterborne and environmental diseases, said in an agency news release.

The 13-year review looked at more than 120 dairy product-related outbreaks that occurred in 30 states between 1993 and 2006. The outbreaks caused more than 4,400 illnesses, 239 hospitalizations and three deaths.

Raw milk products -- including cheese and yogurt -- caused 73 of the outbreaks (60 percent) and most of the 239 hospitalizations.

Some people mistakenly believe that raw milk is a healthier alternative to pasteurized milk, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Its website debunks the notion that raw milk is less likely than pasteurized milk to cause lactose intolerance, an inability to digest milk products.

Unless milk is pasteurized -- heated to kill harmful bacteria -- bacteria can accumulate in collected milk, multiply and cause illness, the researchers said.

The study found that 13 percent of patients in raw milk outbreaks were hospitalized, compared with 1 percent of those made ill by pasteurized milk products. This may be because raw milk outbreaks were all caused by bacteria, such as E. coli O157, that tend to provoke more severe illness, according to the study.

On the other hand, pasteurized milk and cheese outbreaks were often caused by milder infections, such as norovirus and Staphylococcus aureus.

Fifty-five of the outbreaks reviewed occurred in the 21 states where it was legal to sell raw milk at the time, the CDC found.

Young people were much more likely to get sick from raw milk products than pasteurized items. Where ages were available, people younger than age 20 accounted for 60 percent of patients in raw milk outbreaks, compared with 23 percent of patients in pasteurized milk outbreaks.

During the study period, about 2.7 trillion pounds of milk was produced in the United States. By comparing that amount to the estimated 27 billion pounds (1 percent) consumed raw, the study authors determined that raw milk products cause 150 times more outbreaks than pasteurized milk.

The study appears Feb. 21 in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, published by the CDC.

It's impossible for consumers to tell if raw milk is safe to drink by looking at, smelling, or tasting it, the CDC said.

"Restricting the sale of raw milk products is likely to reduce the number of outbreaks and can help keep people healthier. The states that allow sale of raw milk will probably continue to see outbreaks in the future," Tauxe said.

Study co-author Barbara Mahon, deputy chief of the CDC's Enteric Diseases Epidemiology Branch, said in the news release: "While some people think that raw milk has more health benefits than pasteurized milk, this study shows that raw milk has great risks, especially for children, who experience more severe illnesses if they get sick.

"Parents who have lived through the experience of watching their child fight for their life after drinking raw milk now say that it's just not worth the risk," she added.

Guess I should have been dead a long time ago - 68 and still dranking raw milk from old bossey - making my own butter and buttermilk - oh so good
      • squaremile 3 mths ago
That isn't quite the same as storing and processing raw milk. Bacteria multiply when stored improperly as opposed drinking from "old bossey". So your anecdotal evidence is of little value other than folklore.
      • El Kabong 3 mths ago
So pasteurized milk is never stored improperly?
      • El Kabong 3 mths ago
@ Squaremile, I drink raw milk from my cows and goats. Slaughter my my livestock and what I hunt. Grow and eat my own veggies and fruit. And my dick hangs down halfway to my knees. How about you?
    • Carmen  •  Palo Cedro, California  •  3 mths ago
It's amazing that my family growing up that we managed to survive, we all drank raw milk, cow and goat.
      • goddess 3 mths ago
If you grew up on (or near) a farm , then your milk was fresh - milked that day or the day before. When it is distributed to stores, the bacteria have time to multiply to harmful levels.
      • Tank 3 mths ago
You also probably had cows and coats living in a field outside, eating grass. Since commercialization of the diary and meat industry and cows being fed corn and unnatural grains and no forage, and living in cramped, unsanitary conditions food borne illness has skyrocketed. When I was a kid raw eggs, dairy and meat were a lot safer because the cows and chickens weren't living in their own excrement and being fed corn and chemicals.

Tank - everything you have said is true. But -
Goddess - very little raw milk is sold in stores, other than small independent markets or co-ops. Most of the time to have to actually go directly to the farm due to strict regulations.

funny how people survived for generation upon generation drinking raw milk and suddenly it's a "killer" LOL I love our government.. NOT... I grew up drinking it, as did my parents, their parents & so on & so on. Maybe people should stop shooting themselves and their kids up with all these stupid vaccines that destroy the body's ability to fight infections. Allow yourself and your kids to get sick.. That is how we stay healthy, by giving our immune systems the chance to do what they are suppose to do.

        It's shockingly simple, isn't it? :)

        You are SO right!
      • Keri 3 mths ago
Hmm people survived for generations without seat belts in cars. and with lead paint on their window sills. Well, many people survived but not all. People survived for many generations without going to school. People survived without any medicine or surgeries...well, many people survived but not all. No one wore eye glasses for the first few centuries, so those are bad. Back before we knew about hand washing, people survived. well, unless they didn't.
    • Peter-WendyC  •  3 mths ago
People have had raw milk for how many centuries ?
      • Fazzel 3 mths ago
And in all those centuries how many people lived past their mid twenties?
      • I. 3 mths ago
Sorry Fazzel, I could not find the Census Bureau statistical data

until this last century the average age for humans was about 50 years, before 1850 it was 45 , 1750, 40 years and Roman times 20 years median age, mostly due to wars, disease from all sources and being worked to death as slaves(disposable property). science is great but not for commercial exploitation such as Franken-food, BGO, franken-seeds, pesticides, all we could due without.. go organic baby!!!

so when they pasturize it does it really differentiate the good bacteria v. the bad ones? They pasturize it so its got a longer shelf life(about 1 month). They also spread that skim milk is healthier....actually its not...skim milk will raise your blood sugar.....all propoganda from big business.....drink raw.....
    • gee cee  •  3 mths ago
Raw, or unpasteurized is the only milk with beneficial properties, once it heated (pasteurized) its becomes junk. Major problems with Raw, or unpasteurized is a short shelf life and cleanness of the facilities delivering the product to consumers.
    • Kristin  •  3 mths ago
my kids are allergic to pasteurized dairy of all kinds.. coughing, rashes etc that come on immediately. when they eat raw dairy they have no such reactions.
    • Scott R.  •  3 mths ago
It is my choice to drink raw milk if I want to. How can someone else tell me I can't drink milk. Well...Ive been drinking it for years and no problems. "RAW" is the way nature intended it to be ingested. Just do a quick search and see what pasteurization does to the nutrients of milk! It ruins the milk.
    • Peter-WendyC  •  3 mths ago
People have had raw milk for how many centuries ?
    • JOSEPHR  •  Everett, Washington  •  3 mths ago
I'll take my chances. If these do-gooders don't wan to drink raw milk then they don't have to. It's fine for them to collect statistics but another to call for banning food that has nourished mankind since time began. They need to get a life so they can make decisions for themselves rather than others.

More government propaganda... of all the things to be afraid of in this world - raw milk from a reputable source is NOT one of them. Shame on the media for not doing any research.

Such a lie...my son would go into "severe" gastric distress whenever he had dairy products from the store. our pediatrician recomended that we switch to raw milk, and from the first sip, my son never experienced the negative effects from the store bought milk. the FDA is so full of lies it is disgusting. I cant stand how so many people believe the lies being told by the FDA. my entire family has been drinking raw milk since my son was "prescribed" this treatment by our doctor, and we have never had any issues at all.

I do know that the test for pasteurization is an enzymatic activity test. All enzymes must be dead. So if all the natural enzymes are dead, how can the product be utilized in the body? As to the safety of raw milk; yes there can be problems but those problems are what government should be correcting; i.e. cleanliness, temperature, handling and so forth. Yes, if you drink raw milk, you should know where it came from and how they handle it. All that I know is that I'm 72 and the oldest of 12 and as of this day I don't have any medical afflictions, none. As of this day I still drink raw milk! Another thing, I very seldom ever get sick; colds, flu, anything. I think Dr. Tauxe and the CDC are full of the stuff that comes out of the back of the cow!
    • Joseph C  •  Port St Lucie, Florida  •  3 mths ago
Pasteurized milk is "DEAD MILK" All the good bacteria and enzymes have been killed off.
Pasteurization is not to protect you, it's to protect the corporate dairy farms from passing on diseased milk to the consumer. Oh, by the way, pasteurization also extends the shelf life so they can keep it longer in the grocery store!

More big government propaganda explaining to us dumb sheep why we need bigger and more intrusive government telling us what we can and can not eat. As if the government has ever gotten anything right. Get the heck out of my life and off my plate...we the people will do as we wish and we will pay what consequences may come. I will take that over government dominance of my life any day. Take responsibility for yourselves people...the government is not here to help you. Ron Paul 2012

Big brother propaganda is right!!! I can name over 100 relatives that grew up on raw milk and they never had any other sickness than mumps, measles, chicken pox and colds!! I don't see the CDC publishing any news about people who are allergic to anti biotics that infiltrate most modern dairies, that don't even believe in milk cows getting sunshine and fresh grass in a pasture. Don't know how raw milk producers in those named states treat their animals, but if it isn't sunshine and fresh grass pasture, then yeah....all kinds of sicknesses will arise, because they still live on anti biotics....and other trash like chemical feeds that increase production....so it may not be the milk....it's the additives

Raw milk is very healthy and it is a total lie that people get ill from it. Its a shame we are not all drinking it. Raw milk is very good and very healthy for you but the FDA does not want you to be healthy. After drinking raw milk for months, I cannot stand the taste of store milk. You can really tell the difference. The Govt does not want you healthy and smart.
