Ready to unlock the bootloader on an older Motorola device? Not so fast
Consumers waited over a year for Motorola to finally ease up on its controversial bootloader policy. While its smartphones continued to sell well, a small fraction of the Internet was left unsatisfied. Last week, the company launched its online bootloader unlocking tool, and even though the service was only available for a limited number of devices, it represented a step in the right direction. It seems Motorola can’t take a step forward without taking two steps back, however. When asked if older models will have access to the unlocking tool, a Motorola employee revealed on Twitter that older models such as the DROID 3 and DROID Bionic are “not currently in the plan.” Motorola’s bootloader unlocking tool is currently available for the Photon Q, RAZR Developer Edition, and Wi-Fi and 3G/4G XOOM tablets.
