Real Madrid 5-2 Mallorca

Modric committed to Madrid

Real Madrid scored three goals in five second-half minutes as they came from behind to beat relegation-threatened Real Mallorca on Saturday night. Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Gonzalo Higuain came up with the goods for Jose Mourinho's side, who close the gap on league leaders Barcelona to 10 points. Emilio Nsue gave Mallorca a shock lead when he headed home Giovani Dos Santos' cross inside six minutes, but the hosts were level after quarter of an hour when Higuain finished from close range, despite calls for offside from the visitors. Mallorca - who stay third-bottom in La Liga and two points from safety with the defeat - restored their lead moments later through Alejando Alfaro's header from a corner. Joaquin Caparros' team held on to the lead until half-time but were always likely to face a resurgent Madrid outfit after the restart. Mourinho acted over the interval by replacing Alvaro Arbeloa and Alvaro Morata with Mesut Ozil and Karim Benzema, a decision that paid dividends seven minutes into the second half when Ronaldo equalised from Ozil's corner. Los Merengues were rampant and Modric put them ahead with a stunning 25-yard strike before Higuain added his second following more good work from Ozil, just five minutes after Ronaldo had brought them level. Higuain could have had a hat-trick when he went through on goal in stoppage time but instead opted to set up Benzema, who passed into an empty net to complete the rout.
