Recall Alert: IKEA Overhead Lamps Could Fall From the Ceiling Without Warning

From Popular Mechanics

It's bad news when you properly install a ceiling lamp, feel safe after the good job you did, and still have it come crashing down through no fault of your own. That's the situation that 224 people have reported due to faulty retaining clips on two IKEA lamps, the HYBY and LOCK models.

The recall notice states:

The lamps have domed white frosted glass shades and three plastic clips that attach the shade to steel electrical lamp housings. The HYBY has a shade that is 15 inches in diameter and decorated with four opaque concentric lines. The lamp housing holds two light bulbs. The LOCK has a shade that is 10 inches in diameter. The lamp housing holds one light bulb. Type number and the model name of the lamps are on a label attached to the electrical lamp housing. The HYBY is type number T1011 and the LOCK is type number T0201.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that you should immediately stop using the recalled ceiling lamps, uninstall them, and return them to any IKEA store for a full refund.

There were 840,000 of these units sold at IKEA stores worldwide and online from October 2012 through January 2016 for the HYBY and from November 2002 through January 2016 for the LOCK. So if you've bought anything from IKEA that is currently on your ceiling, take a look up to inspect it right away.
