    Red Arrows stunt team jet crashes during air show

    LONDON (AP) — A plane belonging to the British military's aerobatic display team crashed and broke into pieces Saturday after taking part in an air show in southern England, police and a witness said. There was no immediate word on the condition of the pilot.

    The Red Arrows nine-plane stunt team had finished a display over the seafront in Bournemouth, 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of London, and was returning to the airport when one of the jets crashed.

    Police said officers were called to the site just before 2 p.m (1300GMT) by a member of the public who saw the crash. They cordoned off an area near a village where the Royal Air Force Hawk T1 jet came down, about a mile (1.6 kilometers) from Bournemouth Airport.

    Amateur footage showed one of the jets arcing toward the ground as it flew low over farmland.

    Local resident Shaun Spencer-Perkins said the plane came down in fields, near a river.

    "I heard a rushing sound and I saw a plane about 15 meters (50 feet) above the ground racing across the fields," he told the BBC. He said that the jet "hit the ground, exploded into pieces," and two members of the public jumped into the river to search for the pilot.

    The Ministry of Defense said it was aware of an incident involving the Red Arrows and was investigating. It gave no further details.

    Police said a military air accident team would investigate the cause of the crash.

    The Bournemouth Air Festival, which runs until Sunday, said events were continuing as scheduled.

    The Red Arrows are famous for their airborne stunts, red, white and blue vapor trails, dramatic flypasts and trademark diamond formation. Formed in 1965, they have flown more than 4,000 displays in 53 countries. Their red single-engine jet trainers are a familiar sight at air shows and military events.

    The pilots are drawn from front-line RAF squadrons, and return to active duty after three years with the Arrows. In 2009, Flight Lt. Kirsty Moore became the first female member of the team.

    The nine-pilot team last had an accident in March 2010, when two jets crashed in training in Crete. Neither pilot was seriously injured in that incident.

      What is the point of having air shows in the first place? They are dangerous and cost too much money and lives for those in the planes and sometimes for some in the audiance. I think they should all be stopped.

        Airshows are ways for the public to see a variety of aircraft that normally you would not see up close due to restrictions. Many people like aviation and these shows give them the opportunities to enjoy this. It also helps the younger generation in choosing a career in aviation. American airshows are run very safe and away from the public for the most part. We have hundreds of them every year without the crowds getting hurt. A car race or speedboat race or even a rally is far more dangerous and have killed many more people than airshows.

        Take a minute, go back and REREAD the story and you will see it was AFTER the airshow that it crashed. Just like it could at any other time an aircraft is in the air. The airshow didnt "cause" the crash! Your comment is what gives women everywhere a bad rep!

        Wrong what's your name Stupidity; The F/A-18 flown by the U.S. Navy and Marines Blue Angels is not abused, it is the most well maintained Aircraft tin the World. If I had the same Aviation Mechanics, I would be proud to fly those Hornets at anytime.

        Contrary to what you believe, there is not a net loss of taxpayer money for Air Shows. Military Staff and Personnel are paid 24 hours a day regardless of when they are on duty. Fuel for Aircraft will be used regardless of consumption rate during an Air Show or during required Flight Training Hours. Their is actually funds made for the local civilian population in town and at the concession stands at the Air Show.

      I love watchingthe Red Arrows and admire their skill and courage. My condolences to the family of Jon Egging and the other members of the Red Arrows team. I am gutted that this should happen here.

      IF you really want your money's worth, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) "Snowbirds" are far superior than anything ever seen provided by the Thunderbirds, Blue Angels, etc. For starters, there are twelve aircraft, not six or so...that provides for additional, multi-level aerobatics the likes of which you will NOT see the USAF or USN "demonstration" teams perform. Not sure why...maybe the same reason the USMC kept crashing in their Hawker Harrier vertical take off and land aircraft...
