    There’s an unsung hero of this November holiday - when Americans sit down for their turkey dinner, they should give thanks for their local plumber. Home-services website, Redbeacon (http://www.redbeacon.com) finds that American plumbers see 20 percent more business the day after Thanksgiving compared to an average day – and it’s for a variety of kitchen and food-related reasons. Redbeacon offers plumber approved tips to help homeowners this holiday season.

    Because so many people entertain large groups for Thanksgiving dinner, this usually means a house full of guests – which means the plumbing system is working overtime. And when the pipes don’t flow or toilet doesn’t flush, that’s where a local plumbing professional comes in.

    Because the day after Thanksgiving is so high-volume for plumbers, expect local businesses to be a little backed up. “Through our booking system, you should absolutely be able to connect with the right plumbing professional for the job, even on a high-volume day like Black Friday, “says Anthony Rodio, CEO of Redbeacon. “Our roster of approved plumbers is vast, so if you have an immediate Black Friday concern, we can get you a plumber to your house within the day.”

    There could be delays in getting a professional to fix the sink or toilet, so prevention is the best recourse. Here are some plumber-approved tips to keep the pipes in top shape:

    1) Starchy, sinewy, and stringy food items do not grind well in the garbage disposal. Toss those kinds of items in the trash, not the sink.

    2) After turning off the garbage disposal after grinding, let the cold water continue to run for about 10 seconds. This allows the items in the disposal to fully rinse through the pipes.

    3) Drain pipes might already be sluggish from use over time. With houseguests, wait a few minutes between showers to make sure that the pipes have time to empty between jobs.

    4) The sharpness of the blades in your garbage disposal is crucial to making sure too-big food items don’t lodge themselves in the pipes. Occasionally grinding ice in the garbage disposal keeps the blades knife-edged and efficient.

    5) Keep the hot oil out of the drain! Additionally, hot water used to wash down grease increases the likelihood that the grease will make it farther down pipes before it solidifies. Always use cold to lukewarm water to rinse things down the drain.
