Redbox Raises DVD Prices: We've Seen This Movie Before

In a move that no doubt caused a lot of consternation after rival Netflix's experience doing the same, Redbox has decided to raise the price of its DVD rentals.

The increase, which goes into effect Oct. 31, is only from $1 a day to $1.20 a day. Prices for Blu-ray rentals and game rentals will stay at $1.50 and $2, respectively. "This marks the first price increase for a Redbox standard-definition DVD rental in eight years," Paul Davis, CEO of Coinstar said in a press release. Davis went on to blame increased operating expenses, including recent increases in debit card interchange fees. Redbox has posted more than $1 billion in sales so far this year. However, some of the money will likely go towards Redbox's first national brand advertising campaign. Reps from Redbox could not be reached for comment.

[More from Mashable: Timeline: How Netflix Lost Two-Thirds of Its Value in 3 Months]

Though the price increase was slight, it was enough to send parent company Coinstar's stock down 11% in after-hours trading. One likely reason is the recent memory of Netflix's disastrous experience with a 60% price increase that went into effect in September and has contributed to the company's fall from grace. At least one analyst believed the move had benefited Redbox, as consumers canceled their Netflix accounts and sought out Redbox as an alternative.

What do you think? Will this increase influence your viewing habits at all? Let us know in the comments.

A twenty pervent increase is a big increase any way you want to look at it. Just because some think a 20% increase is better than a 60% increase, it's still an increase. What if it were a 20% increase in groceries? Would that be okay? My protest? I'll stop using Redbox!
      • Tony 7 mths ago
you think groceries havent gone up 20% in the past 8 years? more than that man.. its been 8 years since redbox changed its price, its common sence that the price should raise when EVERYTHING else has risen since yours

Screw that redbox! You spend more in gas running the movies back and forth then to just rent online! Vudu here I come!
      • Michelle 6 mths ago
Tony, you are SOOOOOO wrong! Redbox has very few employee's. Their overhead is next to nothing!

      20% is a "slight" increase???
      • Tony 7 mths ago
yes it is slight when 20% = 20 cents! thats like saying the price of a stick of gum went from 5 cents up to 8 cents.. OMG THATS a 60% INCREASE!!! cmon now, if it went from $100 to $120 that would be something but its 20 cents
      • Tony 7 mths ago
all you people triping on this, CMON.. they havent raised the price in 8 YEARS, the price of EVERYTHING ELSE has been raised at least 20% over the past 8 years! its common sense that the price would raise after so long when EVERYTHING else has risen including movie theater tickets themselfs, as well as groceries insurance gas ect ect.. you gonna stop buying everything when the price rises? youd buy nothing basicly. Sure other stuff hasnt risen 20% at once but has more then 20% over time, what you want them to have gone $1.00 , $.1.05, $1.10 ect ect?
AND when 20% is 20 CENTS thats not that much, its still cheaper then anything else (except stealing the movies online for free)

I just found out today about the price increase as I was going to rent a movie out of their poor selection of movies. I am on a budget and I would rent from them a few times a week. Today I canceled the process when I saw the price increase. Also the cheese i normally buy at walmart shrunk the brick size for the same price. Sorry I will no longer be buying there product either. This out of control inflation in a dead economy will further cause a spiral downward.

So, redbox gained a lot of netflix's customers and they respond by raising prices? What a joke! As long as blockbusters prices are still a dollar I will boycott redbox and rent all my dvd's from blockbuster.

You fat Little Greedy Pigs! Do you think people left netflix because of the increase? NO! They left out of principle and spite! People dont like feeling as if they are being ripped off!! You WILL suffer the same fate! Dont be surprised to find your machines being tampered with! I can see the headlines now. NEWS FLASH: Poptarts are popping out of redboxes everywhere. Now you can have tasty treats to go with your movie! Thats not a bad idea! Microwave popcorn at the same machine! Dont steal my idea redbox or i'll sue you! : ) Not joking!

REDBOX, YOU SUCK! BIG TIME! You just lost a valued customer $30+ month! You seem to miss a very big point! Most people keep redbox movies for 2-3 days! Due to high gas prices, who can afford to make an extra trip out? Thats an additional .60+ Our state has only had redboxes for a year! I would MUCH rather spend my $3.60 on a brand new release from vudu or playstation 2.99! Happy trails! I guess you didnt learn from the other guy! Maybe you did and now you think you can take advantage of all the new customers! Jokes on you!

AND redbox has promo codes that give you $1 off (or free) movies that can be used once per card, ive gotten 10 of the last 15 movies i rented for free .. thats a savings of 10 bucks, in which this price increase of 20 cents would take me 50 rentals to even out to $1 per movie!
      • Michelle 6 mths ago
Shove it tony bolone! 8 years? We just got redboxes statewide LAST YEAR! I live 15 miles from the closest one! Screw that! Old freaking movies! new releases online are cheaper! No stupid disk to return!
      • Tony 6 mths ago
Were do you live Wyoming? guess its different across the country, your closest one is 15 miles! wow theres about 10 within 15-20 miles of me (closest one is 1.5 miles), 2 cvs 2 walgreens 2 Mcdonanalds 2 walmarts and 2 krogers all within that distance.
Anyways, bottom line 20 cents is not a big deal! not when renting from netflix went up alot more then that, and pay per view is way more.
    • Noone Counts  •  7 mths ago
anytime a price increase of 20% occurs, people should naturally protest this. I think 10% could have been absorbed easily, however if they find they can get away with 20% increases, this will occur again and again. So no, I won't be buying for a while and I will likely be cancelling NetFlix as well.
    • Daylily lover  •  7 mths ago
You go Redbox. Because you are already making a ton of profit, so why not raise prices to get more? Greed is so amazing in it's quest to become more greedy.

And twenty cents, because I ALWAYS have change on me to plug into a machine....NOT.

I stuck with Netflix. Screw Redbox.
