Redmond O'Neal Arrested Again; Celebrity Relapse All Too Common

COMMENTARY | Redmond O'Neal, the son of Ryan O'Neal and the late Farrah Fawcett, was arrested July 28 for possession of heroin after being pulled over for running a red light, People reports.

O'Neal admitted he was on felony probation after he was stopped by the police for the infraction, and consented to a search of the car, where officers found heroin and marijuana. He was not found to be under the influence, but he was booked and being held without bail until he goes in front of a judge Thursday.

Last summer, O'Neal completed a year-long drug treatment program and released this statement through his lawyer: "My plan is to move forward with my life, clean and sober. I am going to do so privately and with as much quiet dignity as I can."

During his court room graduation from the program, the judge told O'Neal, as well as the other graduates, "This is the fight for the rest of your life."

It is unfortunate that O'Neal was unable to stay sober, but relapse is not uncommon, and can be an even bigger challenge for people who are in the celebrity spotlight. Children who grow up in Hollywood and have access to large amounts of money at an early age without having to work for it find drugs are an easy way to relieve their boredom.

According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, 32 percent of men relapse within six months of completion of a rehab program. Although I do not have statistics to base my opinion on, I would think the rate for celebrities is worse than that of an average person.

O'Neal's father Ryan has also been in trouble with the law for drugs and was required to attend a drug diversion program. Our children often follow our lead, hence the saying "do as I say, not as I do".

There are far too many celebrities, as well as average people, who have lost their lives due to drug and/or alcohol addiction. In the United States alone, it is said that there are more than 900,000 people who are addicted to heroin, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

The road of the drug addict offers two options. One path leads to a certain untimely death, and the other road leads to hope for recovery and, although difficult, the light at the end of that road is worth the journey.

I hope O'Neal finds the strength and courage to take the road to recovery, or he may become yet another statistic on the list of drug-related celebrity deaths.

I am so sorry..don't give up Redmond!

It's sad that the boy lost his mother, but everyone who loses a parent does not resort to drugs...also, his father shows very little personal insight (Ryan & Tatum - The O'Neals on Own) so I am not surprised that this boy has lacked guidance in his own life.

Totally agree with you M....All one has to do to is watch an episode of this Ryan & Tatum reality show to see how lost Redmond is. Farrah loved him so much and left him as trustee of all her assets. I like Tatum and think she is a great actress..But there will surely be more dysfunction, except with more money now. Hope Redmond finds a really good gal that he falls in love with. That is his only hope.

It doesn't matter who thier parents are or what they do. They are not the problem he is.
      • Margaret B 9 mths ago
Could it also be that the focus on Tatum and not on Redmond is having an adverse effect on him? I don't know but I feel sorry that he is not more a part of the documentary story. Maybe it would have helped him to feel more cared about.

He was using long before Farrah died...and addicts have to learn how to cope with the events of life -- parents' passing, etc. -- w/o resorting to drugs again. If he can't turn to his dad, then he needs a good sponsor who will show him how to remain clean, one day at a time.
      • Andrea 9 mths ago
He needs to want to do the work. A sponsor is just walks us throught the steps. No human power and keep us sober. Not even a sponsor.

I have been watching the Ryan/ Tatum program on own, talk about child abuse in the first degree.Ryan's kids are all damaged, he is damaged. Us poor folks smoke too much or drink too much because of abuse, his kids have money and can afford the expensive stuff. I don't know what the answer is here, they are all adults and need to seek whatever help they need to get over this mess before it kills them!

Spoiled little rich kiids.... just grow up, get a job, and move out of that hell hole.
      • vamps-got-soul 9 mths ago
That's exactly what is wrong with non-addicts. They have no idea of the POWER of addiction, the drug/drink is such an obsession and compulsion that when an addict just starts to think about that drug, all else is gone, family/friends/rent etc.Unless you've been there, you'll never understand.

BIG SURPRISE coming from a conservative......Its just so easy for you to judge when you have no idea what you're talking about or what these kids go through growing up. Sure you can point the finger all you want because they lived under the umbrella of fame and money. But reasonably minded people know that fame and money do not make people perfect or happy for that matter. So go ahead and throw your wicked self-centered judgements out there. See where that gets you with your almighty god you people always love to claim you're a follower of. Didn't he say NOT to judge others unless you want to be judged yourselves? Well your time is coming honey and it won't be pretty.

Redmond had the misfortune to have Ryan and Farrah as parents. You know they both were self centered hollywood types and although Farrah is gone, Ryan continues to be self absorbed in his own stuff. Redmond has to face some harsh realities and decide if he wants to live or die.
      • mystical pippin 9 mths ago
Seriously? Oh to be you so full of wisdom and kindness and tolerance. Apparantly in your world all "hollywood types" what ever that is are self centered. I just love it when idiots think they know what they're talking about - especially the ones who force their uneducated opnions on everyone. It gives me such great pleasure to call you out on your ignorant, classless mentality.

Cmon,Your mother Farrah gave you everything she owned. Why not try making her proud .Do something constructive.
      • mystical pippin 9 mths ago
How about YOU do something constructive hmm? instead of judging someone you don't even know......

Attention Ryan O'Neal. This is your son. Help him.

The glaring hole in this commentary - He was not found to be under the influece... therefore the writer is making an assumption. You know the saying about assuming!!!!

i think he is a very sad kid. wish him well.

I think this article is very poorly written . THe author cannot seem to decide whether addiction is a disease " one path leads to certain untimely death " , who would choose death if they they felt they had a choice .? And on the other hand also describes it as behavior learned from parents who told us to " do as I say not as I do ? " . One thing IS certain , addiction is a huge problem in our society and most addicts are likely to relapse . Also , Redmond is seen as a rich but with nothing to do but buy drugs to ease his boredom - how about also seeing him as a young man who recently lost his mother due to a long bout with cancer .
    • FeliciaM  •  9 mths ago
The poor kid never had a chance. Both Farrah and Ryan snorted when he was a young child. Sometimes Farrah canceled shows because she was so stoned. And, remember, Ryan tried to pick up his own daughtert, Tatum, at Farrah's funeral. Barf city.

Doesn't matter who you parents are, how much money you have, or how you were raised, YOU CAN STILL BECOME AN ADDICT!!!!! As someone who has been clean for almost 3 years, I know how hard it is to not pick up. Most people who have all these ugly comments have never had to fight this problem, and don't know what it is like. Everyone makes mistakes, stop judging him for his.
    • Erica  •  9 mths ago
Jim about the only cause this kid is concerned with, is the abilityto get loaded from time to time. He is another byproduct of those in Tinseltown, who propagate and breed a race of #$%$#39;s.
    • vamps-got-soul  •  9 mths ago
I have no idea where these "statistics" come from but myself and many others came out of rehab in and around October 24th 1980, and we are ALL still sober and clean! At first all I did was "show up" to every AA meeting possible. AA works, IF you go to meetings!
    • Bobby S  •  9 mths ago
I was really hoping that the young man would stay clean. I am also a recovering addict and it does not matter if your parents are famous and rich or middle class and dysfunctional, or poor with no hope. The point is that unless he was forced to shoot heroin the first time by someone else at gun point than this was his choice. There are people on these "comments" that are just haters on everybody it seems.
I had also read from "Radar on Line" which first printed the story that he had stopped seeing his sponsor and stopped attending meetings at the end of 2010 and early 2011. He also started hanging with the "bad" crowd again. The article states that his girlfriend is not a good influence. ( I REMEMBER HOW DIFFICULT IT WAS TO CHANGE EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE IN MY LIFE. I DEFINITELY NEEDED HELP AND DIDN'T DO IT ALL ON MY OWN.)
So I have a question. Does anyone know when Ryan and Tatum started shooting for their show on Oprah's network? I just wonder if this could have been some kind of trigger for Redmond? To me he does seem very private. I don't believe this man has any desire for fame, IMO. The stories I have read also have said that Ryan kept begging him to be a part of this train wreck of a show that I watched only 2 times. I know, why? I watched because I was an avid fan of Farrah's and they used her name as much as they could to promote this show.
No one is perfect and everyone deserves a chance at being happy in my opinion. I do not believe that addicts belong in prison. Being an addict does NOT automatically make you a criminal. I hope that Redmond will find the courage to face his demons, get away from his father, spend his time with his brother Griffin and find a program that works for him.
    • Jewell  •  9 mths ago
Doesn't matter who you parents are, how much money you have, or how you were raised, everyone makes their own choices and Redmond has chosen a life the will amount to nothing.
    • cjk  •  9 mths ago
Addiction is a terrible problem. It is not necessarily a learned behavior, but the genes that lead to addiction can be inherited. Given the money and freedom Redmond had, it is not surprising that he relapsed.
    • Nos Nhoj  •  9 mths ago
This is just a classic case of a kid whose very own father introduced his kids to drugs and so typical of a trust fund kid shooting all of his mother's hard-earned fortune into his veins because he "just can't find himself" and "just can't quit." If only Redmond might PRETEND that he doesn't have trust fund money to burn through, maybe he can get a job as a bag boy at Von's and learn to make an honest living the way the rest of the world has to. REDMOND, this is your mother talking, GROW UP. We're tired of seeing you in the news for this kind of dopey behavior.
    • CHRISTINA  •  9 mths ago
How sad that he has to disgrace his mother by continuing to behave like a jerk. Does he not love her enough to respect her?
