Reid: ‘Even the tea party’ supports 5 percent tax increase on millionaires

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has proposed a 5 percent tax increase on millionaires to pay for President Obama’s jobs bill, arguing that even the tea party supports his proposal.

“More than 50 percent of the tea party and about 75 percent of other people in America agree that we need to do something about this so we’re going to propose to pay for this important jobs legislation by asking people who make more than a million dollars a year to pay 5 percent more to fund job creation to ensure this country’s economic success,” Reid said at the Capitol on Wednesday. “Independents, Democrats and Republicans and even the tea party agree it’s time for millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share of taxes.”

The problem, Reid said, is that none of the Republicans who support tax increases on millionaires are in the Senate.

“Seventy five percent of Republicans support this tax, the problem is none of them are in the Senate so they’re going to have to listen to their constituents. Their constituents, Democrats, Republicans and Independents and as I’ve already said, even the tea party believe that taxes should be assessed on a fair basis.”

President Obama originally proposed tax increases on individuals making over $200,000 per year and families making over $250,000 annually to help fund his jobs plan. Democrat Senator Chuck Schumer of New York said those incomes are not considered wealthy in every part of the county.

“Drawing the line at a million dollars is the right thing to do. In the eyes of many, it is hard to ask more of households that make $250,000 or $300,000 a year, many of them are not rich and in large parts of the country, that kind of income does not get you a big home or lots of vacations or anything else that’s associated with wealth in America,” he said.

“It also would affect too many small businesses if you drew the line below a million dollars. There are businesses, small businesses that struggle so we believe the million dollars is the right line.”

I propose that we apply the equivalent highest US individual tax rate against all campaign contributions received by all members of Congress. It only seems fair that our fine, elected officials set a good example, and "share the pain" by contributing 38% of their bribe money to the Federal Treasury. How about it Harry? Mitch?
      • WAB 7 mths ago
Hey I kinda like that idea. No more tex exemptions for political contributions.

It's the way you state it, "Tax increases".......makes it sound like something unfair.
We need a NO non-sense simplified tax code that works the same across the board for everyone.
We spend more money as a nation just procuring taxes than many countries take in.
K.I.S.S. Leaves more money for all of us. (Except multinational corporate lobbyist)

I think that paying them $1.00 a year would be a fair salary in light of what they don't accompllish.
      • 1 7 mths ago
You know Bigfoot, they are not really worth $1.00 a year. I think they should pay us for the opportunity we are giving them to engage in all the graft & corruption they can. How about they pay us a $100,000 per year finders fee.

Imagine that, Harry Reid as the spokesman for the Tea Party!
    • Angela  •  7 mths ago
Is this the same Reid that voted for a health care bill he didnt read?
    • Centexan  •  7 mths ago
Since he didn't tell us the source of the poll, I can only assume what I've heard is true that it was a Daily Kos poll. Now we can just consider the source and forget it. Otherwise, I can say I conducted a poll and found that a majority of democrats think Reid is senile.

close the golden parachute for all politicians past, present and future and that will fund it.
    • William B  •  7 mths ago
I like the comment someone made about all the millionaires that want taxes raised (Warren Buffet, Al Gore, Democrats) should just do it the easy way. When they file their taxes take only the standard deduction, a single exemption, and no extra special deductions.
