The Republican presidential primary field has lost one contender.
Michigan Republican Rep. Thaddeus McCotter has decided to end his presidential candidacy, The Detroit News reports. McCotter told the paper that he will endorse former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
McCotter’s long-shot campaign struggled to attract media attention. Low poll numbers and exclusion from every televised debate followed.
The congressman, well-known for playing his guitar while answering constituent questions in online videos, will focus on his re-election campaign to the House.
Last week, McCotter unveiled a plan to dramatically overhaul Social Security. The plan promised the largest deficit reduction in history, coupled with partial privatization of the system.
The Social Security reform is still under consideration by several prominent Republican congressmen contacted by TheDC. As of yet, support has been less than forthcoming.
McCotter told The Daily Caller in early September that he hoped to fill a foreign policy void in the Republican primary field, particularly with regard to China — which he emphasizes is still Communist-ruled. (RELATED: McCotter on why he should be allowed to debate)
In a Thursday afternoon press release, McCotter announced the introduction of a resolution with six House colleagues condemning China’s treatment of political prisoners. The release made not mention of McCotter’s withdrawal from the presidential race.
