Report: Penn State Preparing to Oust Joe Paterno

Report: Penn State Preparing to Oust Joe Paterno

Update 2: On Twitter, New York Times national college football writer Pete Thamel says: "Was just told Joe Paterno will NOT be holding a press conference outside the school. He will coach practice today, per usual." Meanwhile, Nittany Lions blogger Ben Jones tweets: "People are burning their Penn State diplomas outside of Old Main," the campus building that houses offices of the Penn State president and school administrators.

Update 1: Scott Paterno says his father received word that today's news conference was being cancelled at 11:05 a.m., 85 minutes before it was scheduled to begin. "If he had it his way we would be doing the press conference," the younger Paterno told The Philadelphia Inquirer. He also says his dad was prepared to discuss the Sandusky case, in addition to fielding questions about the Nebraska game.

Now it appears Paterno may be set to his own, off-campus news briefing.  SB Nation points us to a Twitter account for Scott Paterno that looks to be genuine. In addition to calling the New York Times report "premature," there was this exchange with a user:

Original post: The New York Times is reporting that Penn State football coach Joe Paterno will not be back next season, as questions continue to mount about the 84-year-old coach's response (or lack thereof) to the sexual abuse allegations made against former Nittany Lions defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

According to the Times, the school's board of trustees has yet to meet to figure out when exactly the coach will depart, but based on conversations with two university sources, it looks as if Paterno's exit could come "within days or weeks." The accelerated timetable would seem to imply he would not coach Penn State in a bowl game this year, and might not even finish out the regular season.

The school canceled Paterno's scheduled press conference Tuesday, after first telling reporters last night they would be able to ask him only about the team's upcoming game against Nebraska. Paterno's son Scott told the Associated Press that the decision to cancel the press conference came from university president Graham Spanier.

I find it incredible that the assistant coach who saw it taking place didn't break it up and beat the living crap out of Sandusky...then report it.
      • Jim 6 mths ago
I find this weird and creepy too . I mean we are talking about a football player who is a grown man here, in the prime of his life and in maximum shape. Instead of trying to stop it and even beating the crap out of the beast, all he does is go home and talk it over with his daddy? Huh?
      • Sherie 6 mths ago
I agree. This is nuts. The assistant coach is just as guilty in my mind for turning a blind eye. How sick!
      • carl 6 mths ago
He was discovered by a graduate #$%$istant, a college student who helps out the team. He probably felt too intimidated to beat his #$%$ but kudos to him for ratting him out.
    • Raymond  •  6 mths ago
If Paterno is dumped by the University, they had better dump those executives who did nothing after Joe reported the problem to them. University staffs always find a scape goat to keep their own jobs. It is the same bureaucratic thinking that perpetuates Washington politicans. Any University, any government entitiy. It is a sad, sad world.

don't bet on it. After Tressell was booted the Athletic Director for the Buckeyes should also have been shown the door.
      • mobetta 6 mths ago
amen,Carol. But don't bet on that happening. Woody and Tressell were both gods to the Buckeye boosters. And when the mighty fall, the rats scurry for cover... behind (WAY behind) the body impact.
      • Steve 6 mths ago
The Executive VP and AD have already been fired and indicted. Paterno is being let forcibly retired. The University President is probably next to go. Its reprehensible that this was covered up, but they are finally doing the right thing...

The story told by the mother of "Victim Six" is every bit as haunting, if not more so. After Sandusky gave her son a tour of the Penn State football locker room in 1998, the boy came home and told her, "If you're wondering why my hair is wet, we took a shower together."

He then ran to his room.

The boy later told his mom there was another child in the shower with him and the coach. That boy was 11.

The mother called police. An investigation started. The mother confronted Sandusky in his home, with the police listening in another room.

According to grand jury evidence, Sandusky told the mother of Victim One: "I understand. I was wrong. I wish I could get forgiveness. I know I won’t get it from you. I wish I were dead."

      But Sandusky was cleared.
WHO DROPPED THE BALL HERE? IT SURELY LOOKS LIKE THE POLICE AND THE OH SO MORAL DISTRICT ATTORNEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
      • ShadowCaptain 6 mths ago
At Penn State football is king. Nothing else matters, which is now painfully obvious.
      • RLJ 6 mths ago
Same at Notre Dame where the coach and AD were complicit in negligent homicide. These "pillers of society" and "builders of men" are anything but!!
      • Somchai 6 mths ago
Their are reports that at least three of the "victims" are in fact gay and it's likely they not only consented to said encounter, they maybe very well have been the protagonist. C'mon people, gays have the right to have sex too.
    • RandyD  •  6 mths ago
Jerry Sandusky should have been fired and banned from campus the first time he was caught naked with a kid in the shower in 1998. There is absolutely no legitimate reason for that to happen. The fact that he was allowed to retire and continue bringing kids to the football facility until 2002, when he got caught again, is despicable.
      • Jim 6 mths ago
And that is why they all need to go down the tubes including Paterno. He could have stood up and had this creep banned from ever setting foot on the University property again. Don't think he didn't have the power. He did.
      • Stan 6 mths ago
Sorry Randy, I must disagree! Sandusky, like any child molester or rapist should have his appendage shortened to 1 centimeter and hamstrung. Both thumbs should also be removed and a P or R branded on the forhead and both sides of the face, without the benefit of anethesia! The culprit should then be forced to do the walk, or crawl, of shame

You call HR when someone tells you a co worker is stealing Post-It Notes. You call the police when a co worker tells you a guy is raping a 10 year old boy at the office.

Exactly....there is no gray area here...

Sandusky left in 1999 what took so long for this to surface?
    • charles  •  Biloxi, United States  •  6 mths ago
McQueary should have kicked Sandusky's A@@ right on the spot. No questions are needed in this situation. He should have stomped on his nutt sack & punched his teeth out! Too late loser McQueary you failed miserably!
    • hohoho  •  New York, United States  •  6 mths ago
And it's not a "sex scandal," Yahoo! It's a rape scandal.
    • iTroll  •  6 mths ago
If your kid was one of the 8 getting molested, wouldn't you want anyone with that information to do as much as possible rather than just hope washing their hands of any moral responsibilitiy? I would sure hope so. Maybe the 4th kid was molested when Joe knew, only to have another 4 kids in the meantime get molested because no action was taken. To say "I did my job" is not enough when a crime is happening before your very eyes.
    • bobbie  •  6 mths ago
The dude that caught the guy molesting the young child should have stepped in right there and beat the tar snot out of dude or at the very least made is presence known and went and called the cops on the spot. The fact you use the excuse that you were afraid to lose your job is weak. As an adult no matter what your excuses are you had a moral obligation to protect that child since the adult he was with was not and was in fact the one causing him the harm. Every other single person who had an inkling of what was going on and either did nothing or notice what they did do did no good and just left it at that needs to be held accountable for their actions. As for Paterno I would like to mention that Jim Tressel was bum rushed out because he didnt do enough according to some to report student financial missteps and what Paterno did is 200 times worse.

      Pedophiles deserve no leniency!
    • Mark Koch  •  Altoona, United States  •  6 mths ago
I also believe that the President of the University Mr. Spaniar should be asked to resign as well. He was the Chief operating officer of the University and he failed to act as well. Fire Them All.
    • JP Tyson  •  6 mths ago
Really amzing culpability on the part of Paterno and the school officials. Basically they told Sandusky he can continue to be a pedophile, just not on campus. They view this as "doing their duty" And this McQueary dude caught Sandusky anally raping a little boy and went and called his daddy? He is a former football payer and Sandusky was an old man- he should have went in the shower and beat him to a pulp. Disgusting beyond belief is the best way to describe this entire story. I only hope these kids can recover.

lets not just stop at athlectic dept. heads should roll all the way to the top of the university,
    • KL  •  San Diego, United States  •  6 mths ago
That's the problem with child abuse and domestic violence...."NO ONE WANTS TO GET INVOLVED"...the only people that I feel sympathy for are the little boys (now men) who got raped by that savage beast...they ought to serve his B A _ _S and his D I _ _ to the lions and have him watch while they eat them.
    • Not us  •  6 mths ago
What about the President of the University, the Althletic Director and his whole staff. Sounds like the military. Find the scapegoat and throw them out.
    • hey  •  6 mths ago
penn state should be losing all football scholarships for a decade. If the NCAA makes a big deal about some kid getting a car from an agent, what about the rape and cover up by a school
    • Pokerboss  •  6 mths ago
The one I don't understand is Mike McQueary. How do you see somebody molesting a child and walk away to tell someone?
    • Joseph  •  Tampa, United States  •  6 mths ago
Everyone connected who had any knowledge and either did nothing or the bare legal
minimum should be fired. the graduate assistant who witnessed this pig sandusky
and the little boy and did not intervene should face criminal charges.
    • MC  •  6 mths ago
There are probably a lot of people at Penn State right now wondering if they have "plausible deniability." What did they know, and when did they know it?
