Report: Two Phillies relievers out for extended periods

The Philadelphia Phillies are trying to work their way back into contention in the National League East, but they may have to do it without two prominent members of their bullpen -- Mike Adams and Jeremy Horst.

Adams did not respond to treatment for tears in his shoulder, and he probably will have surgery that would keep him out the rest of this season as well as the start of the 2014 season, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Adams, who is 1-4 with a 3.96 ERA, is owed $7 million next season.

The left-handed Horst had a recurrence of soreness in his left elbow during his rehab stint at triple-A Lehigh Valley. He visited orthopedist Dr. James Andrews and was injected with platelet-rich plasma.

He will not throw for at least six weeks, according to the Inquirer report. At that point, his injury will be reassessed.

Horst is 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA in 28 games this season.

Also, right-hander Michael Stutes has had soreness in his biceps and will be shut down for at least another two weeks.
