COMMENTARY | Fox News has pointed out how the Florida primary was peppered with hard-hitting ads from Republican candidates against other Republican candidates. With more stops in the near future for the candidates, there are sure to be even more negative ads and jabs at debates. Are the candidates making the election too easy for President Barack Obama?
Instead of spending as much time as possible discussing the low points President Obama's time in office, the Republican candidates have been jabbing each other. Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul have been spending more time pointing out why their opponents should not be elected than why the president should not be re-elected. Of course, the president's campaign committee has been spending time taking notes about what is being said.
It is not like there is nothing to talk about over President Obama's term. Solyndra and "Fast and Furious" are easy targets for the Republican candidates to hit upon. Unemployment is still very high and there are still concerns floating around about a double-dip recession. Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, Egypt, the Occupy Movement and many other points could also be focused on by the Republicans.
When a Republican candidate is finally chosen, President Obama's campaign staff will have loads of ammunition. Most of this ammunition will have been supplied by the candidates who did not get the Republican nod. The president will be able to point out his strong marriage and all of the Fannie May money if he has to face Gingrich. He can rile the Occupy Movement voters by making statements about how Romney is a member of the one percent.
Just think about how Hillary Clinton's words came back to bite her. Do you remember her statement about how President Obama (as a candidate) was only worth a speech at the Democratic National Convention? That clip was played over and over again by John McCain's supporters during the 2008 Election. Could we see commercials like this coming out of the Obama camp later this year?
I know it is a strong technique to point out how you differ from other candidates, but mudslinging like the Republican candidates have taken to is too much. If this is a sign of what is going to happen throughout the rest of the year, the 2012 Election is sure to go down as the dirtiest campaign ever. We can only wait and see.
