Researchers Say They've Found Common Cause of All Types of ALS

SUNDAY, Aug. 21 (HealthDay News) -- The apparent discovery of a common cause of all forms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) could give a boost to efforts to find a treatment for the fatal neurodegenerative disease, a new study contends.

Scientists have long struggled to identify the underlying disease process of ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease) and weren't even sure that a common disease process was associated with all forms of ALS.

In this new study, Northwestern University researchers said they found that the basis of ALS is a malfunctioning protein recycling system in the neurons of the brain and spinal cord. Efficient recycling of the protein building blocks in the neurons are critical for optimal functioning of the neurons. They become severely damaged when they can't repair or maintain themselves.

This problem occurs in all three types of ALS: hereditary, sporadic and ALS that targets the brain, the researchers said.

The discovery, published Aug. 21 in the journal Nature, shows that all forms of ALS share an underlying cause and offers a common target for drug therapy, according to the researchers.

"This opens up a whole new field for finding an effective treatment for ALS," study senior author Dr. Teepu Siddique, of the Davee Department of Neurology and Clinical Neurosciences at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine, said in a university news release. "We can now test for drugs that would regulate this protein pathway or optimize it, so it functions as it should in a normal state."

This finding about the breakdown of protein recycling in ALS may also prove useful in the study of other neurodegenerative diseases, specifically Alzheimer's and other dementias, the Northwestern researchers said.

ALS afflicts an estimated 350,000 people around the world. About 50 percent of patients die within three years of the first symptoms. They progressively lose muscle strength until they're paralyzed and can't move, speak, swallow and breathe, the researchers said.

      This is excellent news!

This brings tears to my eyes and only wish my loved one would have been able to survive his battle with ALS long enough to see this. I hope researches continue to make progression towards finding a cure because I wouldn't wish this desease on the devil himself

      Thank goodness for this breakthrough!

It's called a Prion Protein and most of us with any knowledge of our DNA and the chemical processes it goes through wre already aware of this connection, or at least had knowledge of the possible connections years ago when we started research on CWC and Mad Cow Disease.

I'm so pleased to hear of any "Positive News," in regard to our health issues that in many cases are hidden from each and everyone of us. Why are certain iatrogenic (acquired by physicians error in treatment) diseases/disorders truth truly hidden. I personally acquired a disease also termed a neurologic one similar to ALS. Mine is called CENTRAL PONTINE MYELINOLYSIS which is an imbalance of sodium either to low or to high. Bottom line, next time you need to go to the hospital be very careful. G-d Bless...

Proteinopathy sufferers: See Williams, et al. "Novel targets for Huntington’s disease in an mTOR- independent autophagy pathway" Nature Chemical Biology February 2008." It demonstrates that minoxidil, verapimil and clonidine activate the autophagy system.

Trehalose is a sugar and protein structure stabilizer that works when consumed as a food additive. This helps protect transgenic mice models from Parkinson's disease.

Methylene Blue is a redox dye that pre-dates the FDA, and helps prevent oxidative damage caused by injured mitochondria. It is cheap and used in the tropical fish trade(!).

I just buried someone who mattered. Sharing information is one way to make sure the efforts spent to understand these diseases was not wasted. Please check these out for yourselves. And stay well!

What's the difference between a "Speak and Spell toy" and "Steven Hawkins" ? A speak and spell has a use.

While I am of course for drug safety and quality, let's be realistic for a moment. There are people who are dying of a multitude of causes for which there are experimental drugs/cures which are denied to them because they haven't been proven. If they have no other hope, let them try the drugs/cures. They might work and if not, while I hate to sound crude, they will still die. I think it should be their choice if they want to try it. After all, a dying man has nothing to lose.

thus begins a pathway to keep millions more alive until they are 114 years old and why liberal social communist medical care will be bankrupt much sooner.

      Aspartame? HFCS? Genetically altered crops?

Oh, my bad. This is the propaganda portion, not the truth.

My husband died of this horrific disease in 2004. The best neurologists in NYC told us that virtually all medications given are broken down in the body and filtered by the liver, kidneys etc... so that before they reach the brain they are pretty much diluted and will make little to no difference meanwhile they adversely affect those organs that become saturated with the medications. My prayer is that not only a cure will be found for ALS but also a safe and effective means for administering the medications and provided at a cost that is affordable. The article correctly stated that the body and internal organs become paralyzed but it neglected to tell that the brain has full unaffected function. It's comparable to being encased in a block of cement being allowed to move just your eyes. The patient can feel and think normally... the hug of a loved one but can't hug back, the itch of a limb, but can't scratch it or even tell you where to scratch it for them... the patient is not even given medications for pain because there is no pain. There is absolutely nothing to relieve the torment that he/she endures... Yes indeed there is Hell on earth and it's called: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

So... let's get the obstructionists out of the way, start doing stem cell research to fix it, and let the people whose lives are saved have their say about the morality of the issue.

Now lets find out what causes the protein's recycling system to malfunction so we can prevent people from getting ALS.

Good to hear a positive news story. Science can cure many things if allowed to do research. Kudos.

I can only sympathise with those affected and their family. However, I'm afraid there is even worse to come...
