    Resignation, Retirement, and Reelection: How the 112th Congress Compares With the 111th

    Although most members of Congress seek reelection as their terms end, a few do not as new opportunities arise or they seek more time with their families. Others leave office before their terms expire, prompted by new opportunities or by necessity.

    The charts below compare the number of resignations, retirement announcements, and members seeking new offices between the 111th and 112th Congresses in total and by party. Included are the number of members who lost primary or general elections.

    At present, the 112th is on pace to have far more exits than the last Congress, but that rate will likely slow now that the election year is under way. Resignations, of course, depend on job offers—and often scandal. 

    The big unknown, however, is how many members won't win renomination and how many won't be reelected. Democrats, particularly those in the House, bore the brunt of election losses in 2010. Which party—if either—will face a similar situation this year is an open question.

      I think they are balling out now to freeze their undeserved pensionsand benefits, because they know very soon they will be cut out on them, or done away with . We the people are waking up , and changes are going to be made they know the day is coming, it will no longer be a government for politicians, but government of the people and for the people of this country. politicians doomsday is coming and coming fast, we the people can no longer pay for their expensive high quaility surroundings and great comfort they make us provide for them, which is not essential for the job they do as representing this country, which has been very poorly preformedny all politicians.

      A bigger bunch of unproductive, self centered and egotistical group have never been in office than now. Even if voted out, you'll be paying them until they die. They make sure they take care of their own, at the rest of our expense. Between greed, corruption, and underhanded dealings, they are in no position to expect praise for anything they've done. More likely, a good deal of them should be investigated. But when the fox investigates the fox, the outcome is a given. Honor among thieves....Civilization has changed nothing as far as that goes......

      The Congress will probably be under Republican control without the needed 60 in the Senate and of course President Obama will be in the White House.

      Great non-story - maybe if you listed the names of those leaving we could compare the deal makers and deal breakers and try to guess how much will/won't get done in the next congress( insert name of favorite Kardashian here ).
