Restaurant Sends Unruly Tots and Their Parents Outside

COMMENTARY | Grant Central Pizza of Atlanta, Georgia has finally done the unforgivable -- they have printed a disclaimer upon their menus asking parents to remove their unruly children from the restaurant. Why is this so unforgivable? Because in this modern age, no one is allowed to notice, let alone comment upon, children causing a disruption. Walk into a Wal-Mart at any time of the day or night and you will hear a cacophony of screams coming from children scattered around the store. Like sirens they blare unhindered by the apparently deaf parents.

When did such total lack of social consideration become our sentence? My father informs me I threw a temper tantrum once in public only once. I don't remember it, nor do I know what happened afterward, but I grew up knowing public displays of temper, aggression, or screeching were prohibited.

In recent years I have become a practical recluse in attempt to avoid shrieks of children in restaurants and theaters. If I am having a meal with friends and I have to shout over howling children or dodge projectiles lobbed at my head I am unlikely to return to an establishment that attracts such clientele. I was in a Trader Joe's recently and had to escape when I could no longer navigate around the toddlers with their individual carts and their middle aged mothers who didn't think it necessary to keep traffic flowing.

I am sorry our nation has become so obtuse that the rights of the inadequate parent supersede that of everyone else. I live in a state that no longer permits smoking in any public building, yet I can tolerate cigarette smoke better than the raucous bellow of uncontrolled children. If this restaurant has decided to answer to the needs of the majority of their patrons and preserve an enjoyable dining experience I applaud them. In fact, I would applaud such a thing becoming standard in restaurants and theaters all over the nation. But why should a place of business have to publish such a request? It should be common sense, and at one time it was. Let's go back to a time when we actually respected one another and trained our children to do the same.

When will this new generation of parents get it through their heads that not everybody loves their children - particularly those offspring of parents who know no bounds in letting their rude and inconsiderate darlings misbehave. Many parents are oblivious to how their kids act in public. LEARN TO BE A PARENT!!

Those who react negatively to this posting - I bet you're in this category. I'll go out of my way to patronize any establishmentt that has the guts to confront this problem and respects those customers and their kids who know how to properly behave in public. Kudos to the restaurant.

I was traveling through Salina, KS years ago. Road weary, dead tired. In walked a young couple and three smaller children. I'm like oh, @%$#. Empty restaurant and they put them right next to me. End result.... the most amazing, well behaved children. I paid for their entire bill on my way out the door. It's all about parenting.

oh that's excellent! Great idea too. Thank you. :-).
      • Eric 3 mths ago
It was actually invigorating watching the interaction. Truely amazing young family. Little guy (about 3) tried to push the limit and the father peacefully, and calmly shut him down.
      • edwards 3 mths ago
They always cram the tables together so the waiters don't have to walk more than 3 feet to get the orders. probably makes it easier to bus the tables too. Don't have anyone to talk to? No problem just listen to the others, whether you want to or not.

Just last week my wife and I tried to enjoy a nice quiet meal at Outback. Unfortunately there were two women (apparently Mother and daughter) in a booth next to ours with 3 children ranging in age around 4-6 years old.... climbing under tables, yelling, running, screaming etc....and the two women were completely oblivious to the commotion going on.

I hate the attitude where, "If I can deal with it, so can you" No lady, they aren't my kids, and if you want to play that game I can be plenty obnoxious too.
      • Elli 3 mths ago
Yess!!!! And I love the Outback, and my husband and I order take-out from there now knowing our meal will be ruined if we eat in the restaurant.

It was a shrewed business move. Losing their business is much better than perhaps several tables of others who would quietly leave and may not come back.
      • Bear 2 mths ago
And at least as important, posting it on the menu lets patrons know that they (we) are safe to dine there without (at least this) distraction....
    • Joe M  •  San Antonio, Texas  •  3 mths ago
Absolutely right! In Texas we have the Alamo Drafthouse Theater (not sure if its in other states). Parents of crying babies or anyone with a phone on get one warning and then they are removed from the theater (sorry, no refunds). At least some restaurants need to keep this trend up as well. Its ridiculous to think that a room full of people should have to put up with the assault on their ears instead of asking the offending party to leave.

That makes me want to move to Texas in spite of Perry.

100% support restaurant decision...if the kids want pizza, let em go to Chucky Cheese...restaurants are in business to satisfy the patrons. Its hard enough to earn a profit, much less break even, in the restaurant business and nothing can ruin a night like an unruly child, or the inability of a parent to parent.
      • R. 3 mths ago
More like the unwillingness of the parents to do anything. They seem to act as if taking them out and letting them run loose allows them some free adult time at their table while the restaurant and patrons get to do the babysitting. Just hire a friggin sitter or stay home with them, but I'm fed up with spending what little hard earned $ I have on the few occasions I can afford to go out and eat and having it ruined by someone's precious little monster.
      • Ann 3 mths ago
You have answered your questions R....These parents can't stand their own so let's take them where everyone has to contend with showing them how special they actually are.....Bottom line, these parents could care less.
      • Julie 3 mths ago
How do you know that this wasn't a Chucky Cheese? The article says "restaurant". Let's not group all restaurants as the same. I have never seen kids running under tables at a 5-star "restaurant".
    • Telestai  •  Atascadero, California  •  3 mths ago
GOOD FOR THAT RESTAURANT! SInce most restaurants already reserve the right to refuse service, it seems that more of them could consider the needs of the 95% of customers who do NOT allow children to disrupt everyone else's meal. And running between tables is a genuine, SERIOUS safety hazard for diners, servers, AND the children.

If you can't control your children in public, do not bring them out into public. Your kids are your problem and are most likely nowhere near as cute as you think they are.

Parents need to relearn how to parent. If you don't want to teach your children manners, respect and discipline then stay home and eat dinner. And also remember, we send out children to school to learn how to read, write and do math. It is not the teachers or the schools who should be teaching this, it needs to be learned at home. Maybe if we start disciplining children the old fashioned way we won't need to build more juvenile detention centers AKA child prisons!

Now if the airlines would only start putting the screaming unruly kids and their parents outside. Especially the ones who kick the back of the seat in front of them for 5 hours straight.
    • michaelc  •  3 mths ago
I could take my two sons (2 and 3) out to Sunday dinner with my wife and get approving glances and comments from nearby diners. The kids sat in their high chairs around the table just like at home. What most modern parents don't seem to understand is that their children will behave exactly as you expect them to. If you expect them to behave, they will. If you allow them to their own devices then they really don't know what you want them to do. You must show them the way. Parenting takes as much leadership, if not more, than being in charge of an Infantry platoon!

I was out at a restaurant a few night's back and these 2 kids, probably 6-8 or so, were running around the restaurant screaming as loud as they could. Every time they passed my isle table they would bang into it, spilling drinks and disturbing our whole meal. The "adults" they were there with sat in a corner booth and did not do a thing to settle the kids down. When they got up to leave, I confronted one of these "parents" and politely asked him if this was acceptable behavior for these kids. He promptly told me " Go #$%$ Yourself". That was all the information I needed, as to why these 2 kids acted the way they did! They did get what was coming to them though. On their way out, the Manager told the same guy who told me off, not to return with these kids acting the way they had. This clown, and the "woman" he was with, laughed at him and slammed open the door. The youngest of the kids went flying out into the parking lot and nearly got smeared by guy driving a pickup. So the clown who told me off, smacks the guy's truck and yells at him. I so hoped that the guy would get out and Beat His A SS!!

I’m a parent and I totally agree with this restaurant!

We have 2 kids, now aged 5 and 6 and we eat out 2-3 times per week. Since eating out is such a big part of our lives, we raised our kids to be respectful and QUIET when in a restaurant. We took them to their first restaurant when each turned 1 and have NEVER had a problem with them. They know better. Too many times have we seen other parents with their animalistic kids ruining everyone’s evening at a restaurant and vowed we will never be “those people”. We use only positive reinforcement with our kids and have never spanked them. The worst punishment they ever get from us is no TV for a few days. Disappointing their mother or I is all the motivation they need.

And by the way, we primarily eat at higher-end restaurants, which typically frown upon kids. However, we are such a fixture at our local South Florida restaurants such as The Forge, Burt and Jacks, Joe’s Stone Crabs and many others, that we (and the kids) are welcomed with open arms.

If we can do it, why can’t other parents?

To the inexcusable, society recking, self-entitled, mannerless parents who think their children have the *right* to behave however they want...NO...NOT your house, NOT your street, NOT your store, NOT your restaurant...etc...etc...etc.

In any decent, civil, peaceful society its called common decency, respect, consideration and MANNERS...learn...or stay HOME.
