Review: Calm, realism are weapons in 'Contagion'

The calm is what's so startling in "Contagion" โ€” the cool precision with which Steven Soderbergh depicts a deadly virus that spreads throughout the world, quickly claiming millions of victims.

There's no great panic in his tone, no hysteria. Soderbergh has amassed a dazzling cast of Oscar winners but this is not like those '70s disaster movies that had melodrama to match their star power.

Characters become increasingly confused and frustrated, they struggle to survive and then die in a matter-of-fact way. Even the eventual instances of looting and rioting that crop up โ€” as they are wont to do in these kinds of movies when societal rules have long since been abandoned โ€” feel like blips of intensity, understandable reactions to an incomprehensible situation.

Working from a script by Scott Z. Burns, who also wrote his 2009 comedy "The Informant!," Soderbergh takes us from suburban living rooms to labs at the Centers for Disease Control to remote Asian villages with equally clear-eyed realism. The attention to detail โ€” and to the infinite ways germs can spread that we probably don't want to think about โ€” provide the sensation that this sort of outbreak really could happen right now.

"Contagion" begins with Gwyneth Paltrow's character, Beth, coughing as she reaches into a bowl of peanuts at an airport bar on her way home to Minneapolis from a business trip in Hong Kong. This is Day 2, we are told, and she will end up being Patient Zero. With the help of a low-key but propulsive electronic score, Soderbergh steadily focuses on the hands as he jumps from Chicago to Tokyo to London in these early scenes, fluidly revealing how we pass our credit card to a waitress or grasp a bus railing or press an elevator button.

Kate Winslet's character, the steely Dr. Erin Mears, who thrusts herself into the vortex as the virus starts developing, offers a chilling statistic to some skeptical medical administrators: We touch our hands to our face 2,000 to 3,000 times ... a day. I don't even want to finish writing this review for fear of what's lurking on my own laptop. But I must.

As Soderbergh did in the superior "Traffic," he intertwines various story lines to give us a complete picture of the devastation. Matt Damon, as Paltrow's stoic husband, Mitch, tries to stay strong and protect his teenage daughter as it becomes clear that they're both immune. Jude Law, believably skeevy as an online journalist with questionable ethics, digs for the truth of the story โ€” but government scientists are just as keen on stopping the spread of information as they are the disease itself.

Marion Cotillard gets a bit lost in the shuffle, though, as Dr. Leonora Orantes of the World Health Organization, who's working backward to find the disease's origin. She's gone for large chunks of time and her plot line feels unfinished; it's an example of how, given the enormity of the cast and the subject matter, not all of the characters are fleshed out as well as you'd like them to be.

But then excellent character actors show up and lend weight to some of the smallest parts: Hey, there's John Hawkes as a janitor. There's Bryan Cranston as Laurence Fishburne's boss at the CDC. And you'd like to see more of them, too.

Despite all the big names crammed together, Jennifer Ehle might just steal this thing as Fishburne's right-hand woman, Dr. Ally Hextall, who's racing to find a vaccine even as the number of dead skyrockets. Like the film itself, she's got an irresistible cool about her. But she's also so confident and radiates such no-nonsense intelligence, she commands the screen every time she shows up. (And how great is it that three of the top scientists here are strong, decisive women?)

Her performance represents one of many elements of "Contagion" that will make you stop and think. And then wash your hands.

"Contagion," a Warner Bros. Pictures release, is rated PG-13 for disturbing content and some language. Running time: 103 minutes. Three stars out of four.

In "The Stand," Stephen King pretty much laid it out how quickly a virus can be spread worldwide. The virus in that book killed 99+% of the entire human population of Earth. What with swine flu, bird flu, hanta virus, e-coli and dozens of others, this type of thing could happen any time.

When I first heard about this movie on IMDB, I thought (and was really hoping) that it was going to be based on my favorite book, The Cobra Event, by Richard Preston. It is similar of course, as that book deals with bio terrorism. This movie looks like it's going to be great!

We may underestimate the germs. They are much faster and better than we are at adapting. Human beings need hundreds of thousands of years to mutate. Germs do it in no time. So far nobody in a lab somewhere in the world has said "whoops". Let's hope that today Homer Simpson did not go to work as a janitor in one of these labs, "Whoops"!

Sounds good, but does anyone remember the Adromida Strain from years back. Seems like maybe these people who made this movie are trying to establish hysteria. Like Howard Hughes, afraid to touch anything or breath air for fear he may catch something.

usually with a 3 of 4 stars review, you are left thinking it's really good, and then it stinks like The Constant Gardener, which was reviewed similarly.

Have you ever noticed the # of people who use the bathroom in a restaurant , DON'T wash their hands and then put those hands on door knobs etc, and leave???

      Makes me want to puke!

Surprised that more of us don't become ill.

And how great is it that three of the top scientists here are strong, decisive women? - It shows that this movie is pure science fiction.

I've been saying for years that bio-terrorism is coming. Imagine, 2 martyrs blow up a plane, 250 people dead. Get 60 martyrs, inject them with a deadly virus and immediately send them to the busiest airports in the world with instructions to cough on as many people and touch as many surfaces as possible before they start showing signs of illness and you could wipe out millions. Scary and very possible!

WOE! -this must be what's meant by 'political theater'. Yesterday, they were playing up a call for double chicken pox vaccinations for kids, here in Ca nada, so, it's interesting to see this article appear in such a timely manner.. This was my response, then, and it's my response, now:
The local radio station is giving prominent airplay today to an advisory from the 'Canadian Pediatric Society[? -somebody 'Pediatrics', anyway], that parents should be certain that their children are given "two vaccines for 'chickenpox' " [ -'bird flu' -'swine flu' (and sheep, and horse, and cow, and goat, and whale and dolphin, oh, and all the H1N1's -with all their other number tags, -meaning 'human', etc. etc., -only, the 'chickenpox' one is scaled slightly smaller, bird-size -'chicken'-size)...] -
These 'Pediatric' folks are giving some BAD, and likely, in many cases, DEADLY [or at least, maiming, LEADING-TO-DEATH] advice, in this here instance.
THESE DISEASES ARE ENDEMIC IN THE WORLD'S POPULATIONS, -EVERYONE HAS THEM, LATENTLY, some people having natural immunity. -"vaccines", in such a situation, of wide, latent infection, shall actually perform/serve as 'DISEASE TRIGGER' IN A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE/ANIMALS-and that's even if [the authorities] ARE NOT doing it 'ON PURPOSE/DELIBERATELY', WHICH, GIVEN THE MOST RECENT 'SWINE FLU' 'pandemic', AND OTHER CONDITIONS, AS PROVEN OVER THE PAST TWO DECADES -AND GIVEN CURRENT ECONOMIC CONDITIONS- IS THE MOST LIKELY SITUATION [or, in movie lingo, "SCENARIO"]...
THE ACTUAL 'SOLUTION' IS *NOT* TO 'vaccinate', and to COMPLETELY CEASE ALL 'TRIGGERS', INCLUDING THOSE DUMPED BY AIRCRAFT, WHICH HAVE LONG BEEN USED IN THIS 'DOMESTIC TERRORIST ACTIVITY'.
IN THIS MANNER, THE POPULATION SHALL ADJUST, BY NATURAL SELECTION, WHICH, AT THIS POINT -AS, ACTUALLY, IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN, IS THE ONLY *SCIENTIFIC APPROACH*. 'MANIPULATION' -THE Ca APPROACH- HAS BEEN PROVEN -EVIL.
'vaccines' -especially as precisely prescribed in todayโ€™s news/advisory- are their greatest certainty to kill or neutralize as large a number as 90% of the population.
-of course, that IS the Bilderberger/HAARP aim -
