    Rhino dies during procedure to deter poachers

    JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South African conservationists say their attempt to protect a rhinoceros from poachers ended with the animal's death.

    Lorinda Hern, spokeswoman for a private reserve near the capital, Pretoria, said the 22-year-old male could not be revived after being sedated Thursday so his horn could be treated with a dye and an insecticide. He died in front of journalists who had been invited to learn more about anti-poaching efforts.

    Hern says the reserve began treating horns to make them unattractive to poachers after losing a pregnant rhino and her calf to poachers in 2010. She says Thursday's death was the first among up to 20 rhinos that have undergone the procedure.

    Hern says an autopsy is under way to determine the cause of death. She says the dyeing will continue.

      Well at the least, this could have been an accident...not like the NV, thing to save the wild Mustang horses from starving to death one winter.....by sending out hunters to exterminate the breed. Or when Mad Cow disease was rampant in the cattle industry...the American Bison which intermingle among the herds of cattle...just MAY become inffected...the Government had decided to SAVE the Bison from the dreaded disease..by killing off the entire species.

      I viewed a video on YouTube that showed a rhino whose horn had been poached but it was still alive, at least for that moment. Its face had been sliced off and it was just standing there slowly dying. It was a horrific sight. It had no facial features at all. What I don't get is why they couldn't have just killed the animal instead of letting it suffer like that.

        1540 - the rangers or the vet (whatever they call them over there) DID put the animal down. It was euthanized.
