Rhino horn thieves fooled by replicas in UK heist

LONDON (AP) — Fake rhino horns, anyone? That's all thieves who broke into a British museum have to show after a misguided robbery early Saturday.

The thieves were seeking valuable rhino horns that can be sold in illicit markets for their purported aphrodisiac and medicinal use, but they left with worthless replicas instead.

Officials at the Natural History Museum at Tring had replaced the real horns with replicas because of a recent surge in rhino horn thefts at museums, galleries and auction houses throughout Britain and continental Europe.

Police believe organized crime gangs using mainly smash-and-grab techniques are behind the rash of rhino horn thefts.

"We have been made aware of approximately 20 thefts of rhino horn from museums and auctions houses across the UK and Europe in the past six months," said Ian Lawson, a Metropolitan Police detective specializing in arts and antiques.

"Additionally we have been made aware of incidents in the UK where premises that have rhino horn on display have been subject to hostile reconnaissance," he said, advising museums to consider removing authentic rhino horns from public viewing.

Rising demand for the horns and a crackdown on the illegal trade of them have made rhino horns extremely valuable. U.K. officials say the real horns sought by the thieves Saturday would have been worth about 240,000 pounds ($391,000) on the open market.

The horns are now twice as valuable as gold, police said. They are often used in powdered form by Asians or other people who believe they can cure serious diseases or boost sexual performance, claims that are strongly denied by rhino conservation activists.

Nothing else was taken from the Natural History Museum at Tring during the break-in between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. Saturday. The thieves apparently used a large hammer to remove the bogus horns from the two rhinos' heads.

The museum, located 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of London in the county of Hertfordshire, was closed Saturday while police investigated and museum workers repaired display cases. It planned to reopen Sunday.

A museum spokeswoman who asked not to be identified because of security concerns said the replicas, made of resin, were put in place three months ago as a precaution.

"Just looking at the quantity and spread of thefts since February shows that this is a real and serious threat to museums with rhino horns," she said.

If you were to die today, do you know where you would go?

Do you want to know how to know for sure that you are going to Heaven?

The Bible says that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, so none of us can be good enough to go to Heaven. In other words, on our own, we have no hope. (Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23)

BUT, God loved us enough that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to come and die for us to pay the price for our sins, so that if we believe on Him, His righteousness is imputed onto us, and we will be judged by His righteousness which meets God's standard and not our own righteousness which is not good enough. Jesus also rose from the dead three days after He was crucified! (Romans 5:8, John 3:16)

Romans 10:9 says "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."

There is no doubt that we should better build schoolrooms for “ the boy,” than cells and gibbets for “the Man” learn to get a degree from "High Speed Universities" article in few months and get a job

Yes I agree with replacing the real thing with a fake! Ha Ha to the crooks, when they go to sell them to thier connection(s) all valubles in museums should be impregnated with RFID's or RTD's, or a simple GPS system that's activated by movement of the item. But as another post-er had mentioned, I would have loved to be "a fly on the wall" and see the reactions of the crooks, when THEY realized that they had been HAD!! major L O L ! plus its a bunch of #$%$ anyhow, my research has shown that it is just another fairy tale. There is no solid scientific research to prove what the old world Aisians are saying, as thier need to take a rhino, and lop off his horn, and leave him to die?? for what? Smells like a dead rhino to me. What animal is next? Wierd, and wrong.

rhino horn, tiger bones, sea horses, ... the rare & endangered species folks are willing to eliminate in order to get their units up or have an unusual meal is disgusting. Fight environmental rape.

    • DANIMUL  •  9 mths ago

      • rip1980 9 mths ago
And that Viagra may possibly contain Rhino Horn. :/
      • Michael Anthony 9 mths ago
I've heard that Viagra was expensive. Something like $24.00 a pill. I talked it over with my wife and what the heck, I think we can afford $24.00 a year.

What I like to know, if these guys are so into Rhino horns? Why can't they just bread them into captivity? I mean make specialized farms that take strain off wild Rhino's or Zoo Captivity Rhinos? This would give those poachers and thieves their Horns from farms, while raising the population of Rhinos from near extinction.
      • Anonymous 9 mths ago
because getting rhinos to breed in captivity is a near impossibility, and the birth of a baby is a minor miracle. they don't mature all that fast either, which is necessary both for growing horns and breeding. then there's the overhead. they need a lot of land, food, and water. lastly, these are not docile herd animals like cows or sheep. they are massive and agressive and could easily charge right through most fencing without even noticing it was there. you'd have to put up concrete enclosures all around.
      • Llyra 9 mths ago
The other issue with doing that is the same as the reason they dont breed tigers for chinese medicines, breeding them would still fuel the market but poaching would still provide cheaper goods into the market, so poachers would continue so they can still get the profit and the farms would continue fueling the market, they need to cut down on medicinal uses in asian countries of these endangered animals and put heavier penalties on using them, then perhaps we would have more in the wild

Maybe they'll grind it up and smoke it and monkeys will fly out their #$%$

Oh goody now every one knows what rhino horn goes for. Way to go press, why don't you post the security codes and where to hunt your own?
    • Ruth  •  9 mths ago
I wonder where they (the museum) gets the horns from. Talk about the disintegrating number of rhinos in Africa and ways of preventing. If you really care about that (of course you don't), don't display them. Be in the front-line in preventing poaching. Leave Africa alone and dig your own earth for your own wealth. Horny buggers!! Neither is better

Kill all the rhinos, would the world really suffer? mmm no. we would all go on.
      • Bad Habit 9 mths ago
Why stop there? Go ahead and kill off every species on the planet except for human beings, would the world really suffer? After all, what possible importance could biodiversity ever have in maintaining an environment suitable for man to live in?

All these pesky plants and animals just get in the way of building things and drilling for resources. Dumb animals.

BTW, K, that "dumb animal" remark was directed at you. Could you BE a bigger idiot?
