Rick Perry Pushes Religious Envelope Too Far with Prayer Meeting

COMMENTARY | Texas Gov. Rick Perry has planned a prayer gathering at Houston's Reliant Stadium on Saturday. The potential 2012 Republican candidate often talks about his Christian faith and describes the meeting as a call to prayer for a nation in crisis, reports Politico.

While our nation is in no doubt of needing prayer, spiritual intervention, or positive energy, I see a problem with mixing his religion with politics. The issue as I see it is a big one if a politician has to make a decision for our entire country that is based on his religious beliefs.

Of course, Perry will be seen favorably by most conservative Christians, but how many people does that represent in our entire country?

Many of the participants in the prayer meeting can be described as having extreme views that include anti-gay sentiment as well as being outspoken against non-Christians and Catholics. Our country is based on religious freedom, yet some of our politicians seem to think our laws should be based on their particular religion.

One slice of religion does not represent all of the citizens of the United States; therefore, we cannot base our laws on one religion.

On Friday night, an event will be held by Americans United for Separation of Church and State in response to the prayer rally. This event will be in celebration of diversity, inclusion and unity.

Rev. Barry Lynn, executive director for AU, said:

"Gov. Perry's decision to sponsor a 'Christians-only' Prayer rally is bad enough. That he turned to an array of intolerant religious extremists to put it on for him is even worse. This event unites us in our conviction that government should have no favorite theology and that it must always strive to ensure that all citizens -- Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, atheists and others -- are full and equal partners in the public square."

I strongly believe the more the ultra-conservative religious right tries to push its agenda on the American people, the more we become divided. All religions, and the non-religious, should be equal in America.

Many other conservative politicians want their beliefs to become law. Michele Bachmann has made that clear with her opposition to gay rights. She has even vowed to add a constitutional amendment that will define marriage as only between a man and a woman so same-sex marriages will be effectively banned and reversed.

Michael Keegan, president of People for the American Way, summed up Perry's prayer meeting well. He commented, "Gov. Perry's prayer rally isn't an affirmation of the role of faith in public life: it's an expensive, politically-charged advertisement of a very narrow slice of one faith community that aims to impose its extreme views on the rest of us."

Though conservative Christians may feel the meeting is appropriate, I feel that what is needed is a unity of all types of Americans. People from all faiths and traditions are the true face of our country today. Have they forgotten that our nation's birth came from a principle of religious tolerance? All people's views, regardless of race or religion, should be given equal respect.

If the extreme religious right wants to take over our country, those of us who truly believe in equality will need to stand up and take them on. America deserves that.

Is he using tax payer money to fund the event? If not then I have no problem with it.
      • WarrenERock 9 mths ago
Is he sponsoring the event in his offficial capacity as Gov. Perry, or in his personal capacity as "Brother Perry?"
      • DNS 9 mths ago
He is using Governor Aids & support personnel to coordinate the event, thus using state funds
      • Q 9 mths ago
The real question is he using this event to garner support as a candidate? The answer is clearly YES!

Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities. Nobody like this belongs in a power position. Only bad will come of it.

You can nail stuffed animals to your wall, it will have the same effect, and two hands working will always accomplish more than one hundred hands praying.

With luck the mentally stable will toss this fruit cake out on his arse before we have another Jonestown on our hands.

Well, as long as the massacre only includes "true believers," I think I could turn the other cheek.
      • Q 9 mths ago
Believing you are your own god is biggest most absurdity of all time!

WHERE is separation of church and state when we need it? He's praying for votes! HYPOCRITES burn in hell. Haven't we already had enough Johnny Ramrod's from Texas?

Will he walk on water at the event? Feed the multitude? Wash your feet?

I was hoping for a real show. I'm thinking I will just stay home and cross my fingers. After all, it has the very same outcome as praying!

Not really because you don't believe in anything but yourself so you make yourself god. Someone with actual faith, real faith, can rest their troubles in the hands of the real God and not worry about what tommorow brings. Study after study shows that faith and prayer relieves stress in ways nothing else can. You can cross your fingers, but that really doesn't help does it? Even if a Christian was completely deluded about about Jesus and His promise of everlasting life, at least they can live without the knowledge that their existence on this planet is a waste of time and that their lives mean nothing which is something you can't say. If they are correct, you will wish you came to the cross instead crossing your fingers. They win in both cases. God doesn't give shows to covince people of His existence, because faith is what He requires. Faith doesn't come from shows or man; it comes from God. Your religion is Atheism and your god is you, yet you live in a country founded by mostly Christians--apart from the few deists who were all raised Christian, went to church, and followed the teaching of Jesus--and so were our laws and the Constitution. The first Congress actually endorsed the Christian Bible and prayer in schools. I undertsand you are not a believer, but show some respect for this country's roots at least if you want someone to respect you. Just because many weak people and misguided people have abused the Bible for their own benefit doesn't mean it reflects upon God. What it reflects is the fallen nature of mankind and their desire to do the will of a corrupt flesh. Even a Christian whose has the Holy Spirit still is cloaked in that flesh that is why none a perfect except for Jesus and none will be until glorification.

Poster obviously has not bathed in the warm and lucious blood of the lamb. I actually prefer showering in it, though it can be hell on the shower nozzle when it dries. Anyway, leave the soap aside, skip the shampoo, get yourself a red towel, and you're ready for some deep cleansing. And don't be afraid to open your mouth and let some of that delicious stuff take care of all your dental work, too. Yum.

Wish I could have been there
    • Gary  •  9 mths ago
I see a few of the posters are swallowing the Kool-Aid. Not many so far. Perry used his office and his staff to set up this event and he is in violation of the First Amendment; now let's see if anyone has the nuts to prosecute him for it.

True and I am a Christian!

What about "Congress shall make no law..." did he violate? Now, tax laws may have been violated.

I'm eating catfood after the mess the last president from Texas left as his legacy. Our nation can't take anymore of this #$%$ thanks to all the mental midgets in DC. They should all be fired with no benefits and have the scourge of true Americans who have suffered due to their greed. My life has been ruined! But who cares? They don't.
    • GOD  •  9 mths ago
All hail The Flying Spaghetti Monster (Cheese be upon him). He and he alone is the true god of the universe. If Mr Perry chooses to pray to some lesser god he will be doomed to Pastafarian Hell for all eternity. Do not follow him into the darkness.

      Dear God,
Please protect us from biggots like Rick Perry.
      Amen
    • Dwayne  •  9 mths ago
He is not President material, but he sure is setting himself up to become a TV Evangelist after he leaves the Governorship... He seems like just a female version of Sarah Palin, except exploiting the religious sect instead of Anti-Government people like Palin
    • Angry Bob  •  9 mths ago
That Rick Perry is a religious bigot is without a doubt. That's why he's the darling of the Southern Baptist Convention and other extremist Christian groups. Even his sponsor for his prayer meeting in Houston openly state that only Christians were intended to have religious freedom by the founders of our nation. His little paternalistic "prayer" for President Obama, a man whom he openly despises, illustrates the depths of this mans depravity. They even lie about the attendance at the prayer meeting, claiming to have filled all 71000 seats when, in fact, it was significantly less than half full. In a metro area of well over 6 million he couldn't get over 35000 to come see him pray. What does that tell you about his real popularity.

Most Texans are mad as hell at Perry. The states deficit has grown at way more then the nations at a time when they've been collecting record revenues. And, we have nothing to show for it. Few new roads, No major infrastructure improvements. No new institutions. Expansion of UT, A&M, etc. was financed entirely on bonds to be repaid through student tuition. No new clinics or hospitals. So, where did the money go? To his cronies, that's who.

This phony Christian conservative needs to be exposed for what he is, a complete psychopath.

Great article here by K.C. Dermody. Any religious talk has no business in any government supported activity.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  9 mths ago
When you look at the photos of the gathering, there are people from every age group and ethnicity. It is the first photo I have seen in a very long time where folks are gathered in hopes of unity for a nation, rather than division as we've been witnessing. It is refreshing and heart warming.
    • Scott  •  9 mths ago
Can't wait to get to Reliant Stadium and pray with other believers. This article is full of bunk. If believing the Bible is extreme then call me an extremist. Our Catholic brothers and sisters are invited Amen.

Let me get this straight. A prayer convention for the United States is a bad thing? To ask God to heal the land and bless ALL Americans of ALL races and religions is a bad thing? A black cloud over the stadium because people believe there is a God who is truly a living God? Well if God has mercy and heals the land, I think all non-believers will reap what is sown by others. If Christians said, "Only bless us Father God because we were your only believers! Do you honestly think God would bless a selfish prayer? The REAL point is that America is in CRISIS! Instead of pointing fingers to oppress others we should ALL search our souls and look for answers to HELP the situation. If a group comes together to merely criticize others, what does that accomplish? Because someone is in a position of authority, it doesn't mean they are stripped of who they are. I think when a politician is serving in office they should not be allowed to "Hit the campaign trail." If they are doing a good job they will be easily re-elected based on obvious ability to serve the constituents. As for "anti-gay, anti-any other thing" a TRUE Christian will love ALL people and show the love of Christ to them. God wants us to love a person, but hate a sin of any kind. Love them, accept them, pray for them and allow Him to change the hearts of man. Gov. Perry is stepping out in a boldness that most of us only dream of being able to do. God bless the USA!

If he wants to do it, good for him. He has his right to believe what he wants. If someone doesn't like it they don't have to show up
    • Paul  •  9 mths ago
And then God smote the DOW. Aye, Perry, what say ye now?
    • Brian  •  9 mths ago
So these same christians who were not that long ago foaming at the mouth for the rapture, are now ready to vote this man as president. No way I want these people running things, they cannot even make up their mind if they're going to stay or go.

Don't worry about Perry's pandering to the fundamendalist Christians----if he manages to get the Republican nonimation, he will immediately and magically put religion on the back burner in order to try to broaden his base. By then he can then take the religious right for granted because they are not going to vote for that "heretic/muslim" Obama, so at this stage, prayer meetings will have become counter productive for Perry's campaign and thus will end. The man is a cameleon with no principles or integrity-----just blind ambition.
