In Rick Perry's World, ADD Is a 'Paddleable Offense'

In Rick Perry's World, ADD Is a 'Paddleable Offense'

Rick Perry's made a habit out of horrifying liberals with his alternative solutions to problem-solving. Today, Politico uncovers a new one with regards to children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder. The Texas governor confesses to having ADD as a child and recommends a good spanking to modify a child's behavior:

RELATED: Texas's Rick Perry Is 'Gonna Think About' a 2012 Run

"We have a drug for every problem and a diagnosis for every psychosis," he wrote in his 2008 book On My Honor: Why the American Values of the Boy Scouts Are Worth Fighting For. "We don’t have children with 'ants in their pants'; we have children with 'attention deficit disorder.' That is not to minimalize such conditions. Lord knows, whether you call it a disorder or a 'paddleable offense,' I had it as a kid. The point is, we defend today behavior we wouldn’t tolerate in past years, and we treat with drugs today behavior we would attempt to fix through either discipline or love in the past. Don’t take my statement too far: some drugs are a godsend for conditions we never treated right before they were available. But some kids don’t need coddling or drug therapy; they need attention and tough love.”

RELATED: The People Working to Elect Rick Perry

Similar to Perry's call for a Day of Prayer when faced with historic droughts in Texas, the latest revelation will likely ring true with some voters, while repelling others. You know, the kinds that don't like spanking their kids and think Cap and Trade is the best solution to extreme weather.

He has two children in their 20's. They're probably more successful than you Mrs. W

With a name like Hot Carl, I doubt you would be able to judge what being successsful means...surprised you even know how to spell it...oh yes, spell check.

This coming from a man that believes divine intervention will stop the drought. He is one scary man. It's a sad day when MItt Romney is the lesser of the evils.

      ADD?
Try bored to DEATH in public school.
Anyone remember the hours of just sitting there mute for hours?
No wonder why so many kids have "ADD".
Their bodies and minds are growing exponentially and we make them sit down and shut up.
They aren't engaged and the restlessness is a telling sign.

Discipline by spanking, properly administered (he didn't say Sado/Masochistic beatings, so stop exaggerating) can help effect desirable behavior modification. If it doesn't, there are always drugs and Perry said that they have their place. I raised two boys as a single mom and a well placed swat on the behind accomplished in seconds what hours of talking could never do.

not all ADD or ADHD children are the same some are more sever then others. For some the right kind of disciple and caring will work, but not for all. There are different levels to mental/behavior conditions, everybody is different and the brain deals with it in different ways.

Ron Paul spanks Perry in debates.

Another liberal smear article. I'll vouch for the paddling though. It got my attention and kept me focused. If the liberals had gotten some discipline instead of running loose and being allowed to behave like banshees, maybe they wouldn't be so lazy and focused on taking from others.
      • truth 8 mths ago
Banshees don't run around! If you repukes had brains you might of been smart enough not to vote for G.W. bush for a second term. Then we wouldn't be where we are now.

Perry's just a simple man, with simple values and a simple mind. He never grew up known' no better about stupid science.

I have to say, I kind of agree with Rick Perry. Our culture is WAY to eager to diagnose and medicate "disorders". I'm not saying ADD doesn't exist. I've seen it. Sometimes it's severe enough to require medication. But millions of kids have been doped up to treat "ADD" who could have overcome the challenge with some firm direction and a little patience. And countless others have been diagnosed with the disorder who had every capacity to behave and learn normally, they just weren't given any discipline at home...but don't get me started on the degeneration of parenting in the nation.
DISCLAIMER- I am not Trowa. I'm his wife using his account b/c I don't have one.

Yes, paddle the students and see the lawsuits start flying. If parents only knew what their children do and say at school (they should be horrified). It is not the educator's job to paddle you children. An educator is there to teach. American parents wake up and get a clue. Start being a parent and stop trying to be your child's best friend. When a teacher calls and tells you that your child is acting up, become a partner in trying to figure out what to do instead of blaming the teacher and not blaming yourself or your child. Children learn their behaviors at home, so stop blaming others and buck up! After all, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree!

What a misleading headline -- Perry said "wheather you call it ADD or a paddleable offense" then confessed to having ADD as a kid. He's talking about using medicine in place of or minus the support of discipline.

Working in schools you see it all the time, some students are overmedicated by uninvloved parents who want the conveneince of a medical solution while others are diagnosed with a condition that overly defensive and guilt ridden parents use as an excuse for inappropriate behavior. Either way, the children are not being taught to function in life if medicine is used in this manner.

ADD is difficult at best and it requires an approach that includes medication AND discipline. How parents decide to discipline is not covered in the article.

Please read an article before responding to a headline.

I got my #$%$ busted when I was a kid, it didn't hurt me any. I don't know how much good it did but corporal punishment is a tried and true method of behavior modification. I've known kids through adulthood who have been spanked and those not spanked, mixed results in both systems. I know the drugs are a national disaster, and I'm not talking about stuff people get high on either. The pharmaceutical companies have teemed up with the psychs to control not just behavior, but what we think. Very dangerous.

Today, I'm glad my parents and school paddled me. It works. That's not the reality this liberal smear article is interested in though.

My son has ADD and I begged the school to whip him. They just laughed in my face. But when I would receive a phone call from the principal telling me he was being disruptive, I spanked him when he got home. Needless to say, when he was a senior, I never did receive another phone call because my son told me the punishment at home just wasn't worth being disruptive at school. He is now a fine outstanding young man!

If it looks like George Bush, walks like George Bush, and talks like George Bush, it's probably Rick Perry

Bulletin: IDIOT is in the whitehouse....we should have known better than elect a blowhard with no experience. I'm to embarrassed to tell anyone i voted for him in 08 but will definitely vote him out in 2012....He's a total failure...and i feel like a failure for voting for him.

It appears Rick Perry could have saved my parents a lifetime of support, love, time and understanding, in dealing with my ADD. Turns out, all they had to do was beat the s*** out of me. Who knew parenting could be so easy! A**H***.
      • Hot Carl 8 mths ago
Its too bad ADD is a fictitious condition.

the more Rick Perry talks the more I love him!!!!! My dad was curing ADD and ADHD years before it had a name! And I am a better person because of it!
    • juju  •  8 mths ago
ADD medication is not for the child or the parents, it's for the TEACHERS. Here in Mr. Goodhair's kingdom,Texas, if you are on medicaid, you are only allowed to get the medication during the school year. Not allowed during summer vacation. BTW, before you assume I am one of those who lays around feeding off all of you who pay taxes, I have NEVER been on any type of welfare, EVER. My husband worked at the same place for 35 years.

Mr. Goodhair is a turncoat. I don't trust turncoats.
