Has Rick Santorum finally become a frontrunner?

The GOP presidential hopeful surges into his first lead in a national poll. How scared should Mitt Romney be?

For the first time, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum has taken a lead in a national poll. Buoyed by his victories last week in Missouri, Minnesota, and Colorado, Santorum surged 15 points ahead of longtime frontrunner Mitt Romney — 38 percent to 23 percent — according to Democratic firm Public Policy Polling. Romney, despite his weekend wins in the CPAC straw poll and Maine caucuses, is "barely above water" nationally, with only 44 percent of GOP voters seeing him favorably, compared to 43 percent who view him negatively. Have Romney's stubborn problems with the conservative base and Santorum's late surge given the race yet another frontrunner?

Yes. Santorum's surge is for real: Romney has a "Santorum problem that can't be easily swept aside," says Ros Krasny at Reuters. Mitt had plenty of bludgeons to use against Newt Gingrich, "scoring a big hit with ads focused on Gingrich's ethics violations in Congress." It won't be nearly as easy to attack the squeaky-clean Pennsylvanian. And while Santorum's social conservatism might "land him in trouble in a larger, more diverse electorate," it's gold in the primaries, which are dominated by conservative GOP voters.
"Romney's Santorum problem: no easy targets"

Santorum is no match for the Romney juggernaut: Santorum might really stand a chance if Newt Gingrich dropped out, says Steve Benen at The Maddow Blog. PPP shows Santorum crushing Romney in a hypothetical one-on-one primary race. But Newt will surely stay in the race, "which will divide the anti-Romney vote" and give Romney time to use his huge fundraising advantage to take down Santorum with the same kind of "onslaught" he used on Gingrich.
    "The Santorum surge"

Michigan will decide whether Santorum is a threat: The national poll is interesting, says Ed Morrissey at Hot Air, but it's the Michigan surveys that Romney should really be worrying about. A new poll shows Santorum leading Romney in the state — where Romney's father was a popular governor — just two weeks ahead of its primary. If that poll's not a fluke, Romney's in trouble, because "a Michigan loss would seriously damage Romney’s electability argument" and seal Santorum's "momentum heading into Super Tuesday" on March 6.

Why would Michigan voters want Romney, who told two auto companies to go to hell?

Ron all of your statements are straight off the desk of the Romney campaign. And they are all misleading half-truths at best. Santorum is a billion percent better in almost every way compared to Romney…who always shifts his position to the winning side of the argument. Unfortunately for Mitt he can't erase history…and that will be his downfall.

Yes, Rick Santorum is now The Frontrunner. A glorious title that carries great prestige with long-lasting implications. Just ask Michelle Bachmann, Rick Perry, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, and Mitt Romney.

Why are most of the republican candidates consisting of people who their own states or parties have previously rejected? ie sanitarium and newt? And I hear perry is in trouble in his own state of texas too...that is the best the republicans can offer up to run for prez? give me a break, this was their time to WIN, but not with people like sanitarium, newt, perry, cain, bauchman, palin...and don't even try to shove another Bush down our throats--enough is enough of THAT family thank you

Establishment press and FOX news/GOP math is that Dr.Paul's votes don't count (or in this case, won't be counted) if any-chance he could win.

Beware: Santorum will erase the separation between church and state. Look at some Muslim Nations to see how well that works and where will we find another Plymouth Rock to flee to?

Santorum and Palin now that would assure an Obama win, we tossed his a s out of office in Pennsylvania by a landslide. Please say no to Santorum unless you want more of Obama
      • Anya J 3 mths ago
yes, why are most of the republican candiates consisting of losers their own states/people don't want? ie sanitarium and newt, and I hear perry is not doing well in texas anymore...

He was in WA state today and barely got 500 people to attend, I think there were more protesters at his speaking engagement than supporters. But it must have fried his rear end to end up in Seattle area the very day the Gov signed the gay marriage is legal here bill lol

If you want to read something scary--Read the Wikipedia account for Rick Santorum-the whole thing even after the outline. He thinks the Constitution does not have a right of privacy and married couples should not use contraceptives;hates Libertarians;labeled most corrupt and ambitious senator by organizations. Then read Romneys.

I'm a Republican, and if Santorum wins, you can bet you a** I'm not heading to the voting booth this year. I would never vote for such a far right lunatic
      • SStevenson 3 mths ago
If you vote for Mitt you might as well register as a Democrat.

I can't figure out why the conservatives won't rally behind Romney...afterall he said he was "severely conservative"...lol...it just becomes more apparent everytime he opens his mouth that he is so desparate to become President that he will say anything to get elected. If I hear him say how much he loves this country one more time (when he keeps large amounts of income in foreign banks to avoid paying taxes...which are already at a rate lower than the 99% of the rest of us) I seriously think I will puke.

Does anyone believe the Republican Party bigwigs (as in big wallets) are going to back Santorum? What a charade.
    • NoGMO  •  3 mths ago
I would hate for Santorum to win the GOP nomination because he and his supporters will think they matter, BUT I would LOVE for a Santorum win to assure that Obama will have 4 more years.
    • Dr. Foo  •  3 mths ago
Newt, Mitt, and then Butt Juice. If the circle is complete, Ron Paul will be next and hopefully he'll peak right at the end. It's whoever has the most points in the 4th quarter that wins, not the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.
    • Caliban  •  3 mths ago
As a liberal I'm not very enthusiastic about Obama but he'll get my vote against either of these guys. So what difference does it make to me? If he's running against Romney he'll just get my vote. If Santorum is the opponent I'll donate money to Obama too.
