Rick Santorum No Longer Relevant, Impactful in Republican Race

COMMENTARY | Rick Santorum has come in fourth in the Nevada caucus with 11 percent of the vote, according to CNN. As a political scientist, I see this as the time for Santorum to exit the race as the 15 minutes of fame he gained in Iowa have come to an end. Republican voters are making a statement of how they are not interested in what he represents.

Santorum represents the principles of the Christian right. He is a candidate who most likely would base the majority of his decisions on religion. As a nation, we have moved away from the religious principles of the 1950s and gotten closer to basing decisions on the law and on past practice. The rights of the people overwhelm the ideas presented in the Bible. The separation of Church and State has become more prominent and there is no room left for candidates who believe otherwise.

Santorum was one of the last members of the Republican "Flavor of the Month Club." He had his push in Iowa but was never able to turn this success into a rally for new support. His campaign fizzled quickly after his win and his numbers have continued to dwindle. Obviously, this is not a quality of the leader the U.S. needs right now.

One of the important aspects of politics is finding your opportunity for success and milking it for all it is worth. The goal is to ensure success is long-lasted. The former senator was handed his success but did not know what to do with it. He was taken to the top of the mountain, and was quickly knocked down when he froze.

Consider how the Nevada caucus would have been different without Santorum still being in the race. The biggest difference would have been if all of his supporters had gone to Ron Paul. The representative's totals would have been 29 percent instead of the 18 percent he received.

Paul would have ended up in second instead of third. If Newt Gingrich had gotten the other candidate's votes, he would still have ended up in a distant second place with 34 percent next to Mitt Romney's 48 percent. It is time for Santorum to exit as he is no longer relevant or making any type of impact in the election.

Non of the GOP candidates are relevant, fyi.
    • KenLowJr  •  3 mths ago
Ole Rick definitely had the evangelical vote, especially in the Bible Belt. But when he talked about dismantling SS then they turned away. Strange that in these tough economic times that politicians will attack the very program that is keeping so many from destitution as it did in 1935. I believe that did it for him. To capture the youger voters he pit them against the older voters by calling it a Ponzi scheme with no hope for future contributors. It din't work. Big mistake.

I didn't think Santorum ever was relevant.

On February 7 2012 Santorum swept three states.

The fact you call yourself a 'political scientist' might explain why our 'economical scientists' can't seem to prevent recessions every 10 years or so...

      Was he ever relevant.

Santorums supporters go to Ron Paul? What imaginary world does this author live in to think big Government put your noses into everyone business Conservatives will go to Ron Paul
    • A Yahoo! User  •  3 mths ago
Santorum is relevant because he represents a segment of American society that would govern based on beliefs as taught to him in Sunday School. It is a simplistic belief system that belies reality. That he has any adult supporters is mystifying. And he is completely as hypocritical as his other running mates. He will govern based on his concept of what Jesus would want. Would Jesus want tax breaks for the rich at the expense of the poor? What about the meek inheriting the earth? Was that a prediction or a warning?
    • Bracketology  •  3 mths ago
Santorum will get a bounce from Missouri - just a fact - don't hate.
      • AS 3 mths ago
yeah lotsa religious morons in missouri
      • Bracketology 3 mths ago
as opposed to all of the butt pirates in CA? I'll take Missouri any time.

Well as a wide receiver, maybe you were catching to many passes in LA. Remember that the more you chickenhead, the less Prep H you need. Of course, too much show me can make you sore on both ends. No cure for that!
    • Joshua  •  3 mths ago
here's a funny point: republicans who claim religious views and Jesus' teachings but also promote a strong nuclear armament and 'tough' foreign policy, e.g. stir up trouble in the middle east on a regular basis with wars, occupations, and CIA mischief. What hypocritical pieces of garbage. You faux-Christians are the reason I can no longer take religion seriously. You are the moneychangers Jesus threw out of the temple.
      • re si 3 mths ago
Joshua: The Middle East stirs up the trouble. Here's an example of headlines just from today:
-U.S. closes embassy in Syria as violence surges
-Syria pounds protest hubs as nearly 50 killed
-Iranian warships dock at Saudi port
-One killed in Egypt on fifth day of clashes
It is our presidents sworn constitutional duty to protect its citizens from threat (external an internal).
      • Q 3 mths ago
Amen Joshua! That is the truth and as a Christian I can say Jesus would approve of what you said. I spoke to the Pharisee in the same manner, but they didn't listen either.
      • Balled_Eagle 3 mths ago
Joshua, if you let the ideas, opinions, and actions of others 'ruin' your faith, then I would suggest that you never really had any!

Can't disagree with the Santorum statement but there is no creditability who would have gotten his votes. While Paul may appeal to some Conservatives, he certainly doesn't have much, otherwise they not think they have to vote for Romney and vote for him.

This was an opinion piece so I won't knock the writer but it was a pretty obvious Ron Paul reach out. About the only thing I can give Paul is his consistance stance on destroy the government. He believes it and it doesn't change like that of Gingrich and Romney. I personally think his views radical, over the top and if were ever applied, this country would soon be a third world status. We may need improvements to our form of government but we have a proven government that supersedes any in the world and to eliminate it as Paul wants would be disastorus to all.
      • Aaron 3 mths ago
You really have not done your research on Dr.Paul
      • Streetdogstolz 3 mths ago
Aaron, where are the rest of the Ron Paul Cultists? There should be at least 30 thumbs down by now.

Ron Paul is a side note in history. If you can't see that, then you are obviously one of the cultists.

It isn't that he doesn't have some good ideas. A broken clock is right twice a day. But his overall view of reality is somewhat skewed and voter response has reacted to that.
      • PhilB 3 mths ago
So, abiding by our Constitution is somehow now equal to destroying the government? Pathetic.
    • Adam Schramm  •  3 mths ago
So when exactly was Rick Santorum relevant?

Beware the bought out bias media and government lies!, fox has joined the lame-stream media JUST by ignoring RON PAUL or speaking unfavorable. of him. RON PAUL is doing alot better than the lame-stream media lies about.

If you support the troops, please listen to me; I am an active duty soldier. I believe that Afghanistan will never be a democracy that is free of corruption. I deployed to Afghanistan just before Obama's surge took place. While deployed, I discovered that the Afghan President, Hamid Karzai, has a brother by the name of Ahmed Wali Karzai, Ahmed Karzai is an Afghan drug lord with CIA connections. This is just one reason that I, a soldier, support the Ron Paul policy.
    • Texas Hottie  •  Lubbock, Texas  •  3 mths ago
he was never relevant. He'll show up on Fox or as a lobbyist for some right wing preachy group. A total Homer
    • Jeffrey  •  3 mths ago
Will Rick win, probably not, but it's media and opinion slant when he's either ignored or bashed. Pure facts, disregard spin, he won Iowa, He got Triple the vote results in New Hampshire compared to his polling numbers, He received Twice the South Carolina votes compared to late polling, and in Florida and Nevada has edged out poll numbers. 5 states, 5 BETTER than expected results, Have any of the other 3 Exceeded expectations in ALL 5 votes so far? Irrelevant, I think not. Thanks.

Nice hit-piece on Santorum...laughable journalism at best. Romney is a fraud...he governed as a liberal, and I doubt he even knows where he stands on most issues outside of how much money he is willing to spend to buy the nomination. I'd rather see Paul or Santorum win...at least they are people of principle who stand by their convictions, and their records as legislators. Romney can't stand on his record because it's pro-universal health care, pro-abortion, and pro-tax. He's a fraud people...wake up!

Santorum gives God the creeps and so do his supporters.
    • Rational  •  3 mths ago
The anal-leaker was never relevant to anything of value...just to fellow wide-eyed fanatics. As to the "author" of this article (who implicitely endorses a moribund racist-isolationist), he is equally irrelevant to the public discourse on this "3-ring Circus".
