RI's minimum wage increase kicks in

Minimum wage goes up 35 cents in Rhode Island, to $7.75 an hour

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island's minimum wage has been bumped up by 35 cents.

The state's minimum wage increased from $7.40 to $7.75 an hour effective Tuesday. About 10,000 people make the minimum wage in the Ocean State.

Nine other states also raised their minimum wages on New Year's Day. Vermont's went up 14 cents, to $8.60 an hour.

Rhode Island's General Assembly voted last year to hike the minimum wage. It's the first increase since 2007.

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour.
