The annual American Health Care Congress and Exhibition (AHCC) is an intensive, two-day educational and networking forum, designed for senior health care executives and key decision makers from all industry sectors to address critical implementation challenges post-reform.
The Nationwide Health Information Network is a federally-sponsored initiative for the exchange of healthcare information being developed under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Stephenson was joined on the AHCC panel by Dr. Tim Cromwell, Director of Standards and Interoperability for the Office of Informatics and Analytics of the U.S. Veterans Health Administration.
Stephenson and Cromwell together reviewed the benefits of this new digital infrastructure for U.S. healthcare which allows health care providers, consumers and insurers to safely and securely transfer and exchange medical records in compliance with U.S. privacy laws.

All of the major federal agencies involved in healthcare are finally on the highway – the Social Security Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and many more private providers and insurers are hooking up every day. Said Cromwell: “I’m particularly impressed with what the new network means for the veteran when they find themselves outside the VA system. If a veteran goes to a privately-owned emergency department at 3:00 A.M. to receive care, that caregiver will want to know what happened at the VA – over the past couple of weeks or over the past couple of months. The caregiver needs critical information that would influence the current situation. We can now query this new national network and send directly to the waiting emergency room a standard and reliable set of records. That’s a major leap forward.”
